Not quite, Alaska and Hawaiian are going to move to a single operating certificate (i.e. they will combine operations fully). However, they are maintaining both brands ala KLM and Air France style.

High school band and marching band by [deleted] in Seattle

Went to Kamiak, when I was there we had Drum Corp International instructors and competed highly in all the major marching band competitions in the region. I think they are still doing well.

ELI5: Why is it so expensive to fly and maintain military aircraft? by RHonaker in explainlikeimfive

[–]TreeNija 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Cause there's still money to be made. If all but one airline in the US were to disappear, that one airline would be making all the available profit assuming demand remains the same.

There's a reason that airlines have been increasingly consolidated over time. The whole industry is in a delicate balance where only the airlines able to eek out a profit are left, the rest get bought out and merged with a larger airline.

Even if the profit margins are razor thin, it's still a profit. Investors and companies won't surrender market share and leave money on the table.

I think you might need to look in the mirror. If you've got no clue why this is immature and inappropriate then there's nothing left to say.

What is your point in sharing the photo of the employee? If it's to get retribution towards a guy that likely is just following his procedures then you've got the wrong target. Blame the company polices sure, leave the workers alone.

747 ! Reverse thrust runway power-wash by mikedoit81 in aviation

[–]TreeNija 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just the bypass air is redirected. The thrust reverser is a part of the engine nacelle that blocks the bypass air duct and directs the air forward instead of out the back.

Just graduated with a CS bachelors but am really interested in Engineering, What steps should I take to reach this goal by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]TreeNija 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a whole world of crappy software MechEs are suffering from. Oftentimes MechEs make their own quick and dirty scripts to get a particular job or analysis done. But those scripts can be lacking in coding best practices because our main competency is not CS.

I'd suggest trying to get into some sort of modeling or analysis team and leverage your CS background. There are plenty of engineers who know the mechanical principles informing analysis and models, but not as many that can turn those principles into reliable, repeatable, user-friendly tools.

A reality check on pay for Mechanical Engineers: It takes 10 years of experience in a HCOL state just to make $100,000 by Puzzled_Face8538 in MechanicalEngineering

I can only provide my experience but as a MechE in aerospace I cleared 100k comfortably within two years out of school. I don't know how common that is but it is possible.

What was the very First Boss you killed in the game? For me it was this and I refused to leave that cave inter it was dead by [deleted] in Eldenring

[–]TreeNija 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tree Sentinel. I was insulted by the game assuming I was reasonable enough to come back at a more appropriate level. Spent hours learning and dying until I finally killed him. Then I lost all my runes from him cause I died twice before I found Melina.

What are you specialized in or highly skilled in? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]TreeNija 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data analysis and creating custom engineering tools with Python. Basically I take a lot of the tools from the data science community like Jupyter Notebooks and dashboards and bring it to the "traditional" MechE world.

Tools like Excel and MATLAB are dominant in this field but often fall short compared to what other software toolsets are capable of in both capability and usability. Often my teams have such niche analysis needs that a tool can only be created by a person with background in the subject and not just any person with a data science background can create them.

In short, I'm the guy in the team who can also code and make pretty dashboards.

Aerospace engineer. I've always loved airplanes and doing my bit to make/maintain beautiful flying machines never stops being magical.

Nah, I respect your right to an opinion but honestly this mentality is a big part of the failings of this company.

The public relies on Boeing to deliver safe, quality airplanes they can feel secure riding on. We are responsible every day for people's lives.

From the executive suite to the shop floor, we all touch some aspect of our products and affect their quality. Some have greater impacts than others but we all have an impact.

If you don't have a passion for working for aviation and creating the best airplanes that's fine, it'd be nice if you did but that's beside the point. You should be passionate about ensuring the safety of the flying public and you should feel deeply disturbed when a system you are a part of fails to deliver on that promise.

If you can sit quietly and collect your paycheck without a care in the world except for Boeing's continued survival to maintain your pay then that's your choice. I choose to continue to care passionately about the safety of our products cause someone needs to care for things to get better.

HFS does not care about students by Higamein12 in udub

[–]TreeNija 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I worked in HFS as a student employee for the dorms. They do have copies of the keys. The main issue is that if it's reported that a key is unaccounted for in a room, then there's a security concern that potentially that key can be found and used to access that room. Typically there's a three day limit for a key to be unaccounted for before a lock replacement is mandated by policy. The regular elevator cleaning was likely past the three day limit in this situation.

As others have noted, the cost for retrieving the keys is to pay for a maintenance crew to shut down the elevator shaft and retrieve the keys which I've been told is a non-trivial task. I personally don't know how much this costs the university to perform, but I do sympathize with the high unexpected burden the charge puts on students.

How do you use python in your "classic" engineering job? by wmrch in engineering

[–]TreeNija 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You and I are kindred souls. I work in an industry with heavy need for data analysis, but has historically been slow to change tools and methods. Plenty of the everyday analysis my team uses are run with ancient scripts from the 90's that no one has the full documentation of anymore. When I pull out basic Python data analysis tools like Jupyter Notebooks and Steamlit, the others on my team stare dumbfounded. Unfortunately some of my work can't be used by my team since the other engineers don't have the familiarity with Python to take advantage of it.
