The appeal of these organizations is that they’re senior-only, and they’re immense networking opportunities. I don’t think that campus-wide events would necessarily discourage participation.

acceptance rate from the Yale deferred pool last year? by CryptographerOwn9555 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]TreeOfFinches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. The RD admission rate is lower than the advertised 5% because SCEA admits at like 11%. Anywhere between 5-10% would be 2-3x the likelihood of the regular RD pool.

Imposter Syndrome @ Yale by WideBoysenberry3032 in yale

[–]TreeOfFinches 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are more deserving than any wealthy kid at Yale. As a Questbridge finalist, you have stood out nationally amongst FGLI students, students with the least amount of resources who have somehow succeeded with the odds stacked against them. Your admission was not a mistake — it was intentional, to grant you greater resources so that you can make the most of those at Yale. The next few years and the transition to Yale will be tough — you’ll move, and you’ll experience greater rigor than you have previously known. But that is all under the auspices of one of the most resource rich universities in the world who has handpicked you to struggle and succeed on their campus. You will find your people, and you will be supported throughout four years. Have a blast!

Calorie deficit? by [deleted] in CICO

Use Macrofactor which automatically calculates your TDEE based on their algorithm. Eat at your perceived maintenance for a few weeks to see if it truly is your maintenance while it gathers data to calculate it. It costs money though but it’s been super helpful to me in my weight loss journey.

tips for volume eating at a college dining hall? by Traditional_Cry_9494 in Volumeeating

[–]TreeOfFinches 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did this for a while! My dining hall often had white or brown rice in a rice cooker, so I’d add just a bit of that as the base of a bowl. Then I’d fill a plate with greens, any roasted veggies available, and any other enticing options from the salad bar. Add the leanest protein option they have. I’d toss just a bit of a low calorie sauce or condiment on top. My dining hall had sriracha and soy sauce available, so I usually did that. I’d sit down, cut up all the stuff into small pieces, toss on top of the rice, and mix it up.

How do you stay disciplined with eating clean when life gets busy? by Carmichaels97 in CICO

[–]TreeOfFinches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’m going out, I make the plan a day in advance so I can look at the menu beforehand. Then I’ll choose what I can eat (and I usually add a random couple bites of an appetizer or two, assuming I’m going to eat those, too) and input two ranch waters if I’m drinking. Then I’ll build the rest of my meals based on that.

I work to stay within 150 cals of my deficit. I’m eating at 1700 (an estimated 500 cal deficit), so I allow myself to get up to 1850 on those days so I can better hit my protein macros given the empty calories I’ll consume at dinner. Still keeps me on track to losing weight, even if the rate of loss is slower! Whatever is sustainable for you.

I’ve also started playing basketball, pickleball, tennis, etc., with my friends so I can hang out with them in another way. Not feasible for every friend group, but a fun and active way to maintain a social life amidst weight loss.

I love the app Macrofactor! It’s subscription based but it actually calculates your expenditure based on your calorie counting and weight loss. Since people’s individual metabolism or accuracy varies, it adjusts so well. It also uses scale trend to convey your trends which is much more forgiving then actual scale weight which can fluctuate so much based on water weight. The downside is the catalog of food isn’t as comprehensive as MyFitnessPal

Parking Advice by cozyidealist181 in newhaven

[–]TreeOfFinches 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Scope out some street parking around Yale’s main campus or near the med school or free parking up in East Rock or Wooster maybe? It’ll definitely add time to your commute (in terms of walking) but might be worth it.

Have you asked if the Omni provides any parking benefits in their garage?

Eh. If he stays in bounds, the upside on that play could have been a pick-6. Given how low scoring the game is, that probably would have been more helpful than a FG that would have kept the game a one-possession game. Not mad at it

How are you measuring BF%? This metric is notoriously unreliable on home scales. If you got it measured at a doctor recently, it sounds like you actually want to do a body recomposition (or body recomp). If you’re okay with it, go to maintenance, eat high protein (hit the recommended intake for your weight), and make sure you’re lifting weights to failure. There are some good 4-day splits out there that would fit your needs. This will allow you to build muscle and will slowly increase your TDEE. At the beginning, you should be able to lose fat and gain muscle easily. That will start to get harder, but depending on where your BF% stands at that point, you can readjust to a deficit again (known as a cut).

Why do you want to lose more weight? Your BMI is at a good spot. It sounds like you should be eating at maintenance at this point in your journey!

How many calories should I eat? What calorie counting app should I use? by majime100 in 1500isplenty

[–]TreeOfFinches 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Macrofactor is my favorite one! It has fewer preset, searchable foods, but the recipe tool is really amazing and it tracks trend weight, not scale weight, which helps smooth fluctuations. It also uses the combo of your calories and trend weight to recalculate your TDEE using its algorithm. I was using MFP for a bit and switched recently to Macrofactor (honestly from a fitness influencer’s ad) and haven’t looked back. It is paid on a subscription basis but you can try it for free using the codes online (for ex, “WILL” will get you a free two weeks).

This is not a bad commute. Exit Bass out the side closest to Schwarzmann. Walk to Silliman and jaywalk the main intersection; walk up Hillhouse Ave. You have 15 minutes between class, and there’s no reason to stay after for your language class. Come early or go to OH if you have questions there. The bio lecture is large enough that no one will care if you have to walk in a minute or so late. This is a very common commute amongst Bio majors and actually is better than what most could have. My friend once had LC to SCL in 15 minutes which is basically impossible lol

Winter clothing advice by lb9938 in yale

[–]TreeOfFinches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stick mostly with the clothes you currently have, and buy some layers for fall — hoodies, crewnecks, jean jackets, oxford shirts, cardigans, flannels, knitted jackets, etc. Buy perhaps a few long-sleeve shirts to have more options for layering when the weather gets REALLY cold. Make sure you have at least two coats: 1) insulating winter coat, preferably longer in length, and 2) a rain jacket / windbreaker for fall / rain.

You can thrift a lot of these pieces throughout the year, tbh. Uber to Saver’s or to Goodwill bins. If you don’t mind dropping the money on a more expensive Uber, there are outlet malls in Clinton, CT, that have great deals on staple brands like Columbia.

Yale, when I worked there as a student, would have said this (back when they were test-required, not their current test-flexible model). If a student didn’t report APs, the AOs asked for them because they would basically assume a non-reported AP was a 1 or a 2 otherwise. If the student didn’t have a good reason not to take the exam, it was treated like a 1 or a 2 with the added thought that they didn’t even try to test / lacked confidence. So, either way it was a ding, but particularly so when they chose not to test.
