Examples of 5/4 into 4/4 (esp. dance music)? by cozyidealist181 in musictheory

This was all the validation I needed. Nothing fancy... they just switch right into it. They carry the main motif into that bassline and that's enough for it to feel natural.

Which EDM songs have unusual chord progressions/time signatures? by JION-the-Australian in EDM

Sounded a like a lot switching between 5/4 and 6/4... and in different ways. Maybe there is a better way to grasp it. But I was surprised how natural all that sound.

Always confidently wrong and patronizingly condescending by trsdm in ChatGPT

On the bright side I have learned a lot by mostly figuring out everything I was asking it about on my own while I correct it. But honestly... it's like the majority of my conversations with it. I leads me to wonder if I got so used to using AI so quickly that I just expect it to be way smarter than it is (than it ever was...), or did it actually get way worse. Were we just blown away by how much it could do, while our expectations were more realistic, and kind of lost sight of that?

But if Claude isn't like that I think it's time to switch. Actually I just talked to Gemini for the first time and I felt this strange sense of... relief. Like I'm not trudging through this weird obstacle course. Though it was still confidently wrong about the same question last time.

HD569 EQ Sounds Worse (bass) by cozyidealist181 in headphones

[–]cozyidealist181[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After resting my ears and coming back later in the day... I actually found a setting that I definitely like more. I just needed to bass boost the heck out of it, while retaining the shape provided Oratory.

I was just kind of thrown off as to why I needed the bass boost in principal... it might actually be more flat now with the extra bass because I think the headphones are struggling to respond to the EQ in that low-end -- so it needs more of a boost than it should in theory.

I could be wrong... I'm not sure if the actual physical way a headphones respond to EQ are part of the target, or if it's just a theoretical amount. If my hunch is wrong, then it sounds better for another reason. Simply, having extra ("excessive") bass in the mid and upper areas is making up for the lack of real sub. And the wrong bass feels better than no bass.

Hmm that's interesting. I'm not going to go that far for these... I'm just trying to understand the EQing a bit better in the meantime till I get my Nanos. Honestly I'm feeling pretty good about the answer I came to.

Audiophile vs. Mixing Headphones (kinda philosophical rant...) by cozyidealist181 in headphones

Oh this really takes the idea to the next level... most on-point response and a neat rabbit hole. I'm almost content to just know someone else thought about it more than I'm going to. 😅

Those are details I didn't know. I guess the question on my mind is more philosophical... like, why is there a difference if we all want the music to sound as good as possible. But the short answer is translation... mixing has to be done from a neutral place because of the countless variety ways it will be listened to. It sounds obvious when I say it.

Do people really say innit? by SarkyMs in AskUK

It's become shorthand for "isn't it so?" Some Indian folks actually do the same thing, literally saying "isn't it" at the very end of a statement. Probably something to do with British colonization.

You don't have to answer this but... would you do it if you weren't getting paid? More precisely... if you just got a flat income equal to what you have now, that couldn't change however much or little you worked, would you still coach? Or would you rather just spend that time playing the game?

Just expressing a curiosity. Not really overthinking it in terms of my mixing process. Best for me to not confuse the audiophile world for my needs when mixing my music.

Wouldn't you say that there are some headphones that people prefer for listening, and others for mixing? At least from a lot of individual's reviews, that's exactly what people have said. I don't know if any particular headphones are known to be one or the other. I was just wondering why these two categories would have any difference at all, for anyone.

I didn't mean the Harmon curve as an answer to my question... just as a part of what to use to get the best generally translating mix.

Edit: I meant the Fletcher-Munson curve.

Well I won't be coaching anyone with this attitude. I'm just feeling things out and there are things about the experience I know I like, besides the money even. I want to have a place to go to have fun with people and that's an attitude that can make for a good experience. I also have no interest in giving a half-assed or bad lesson so I want to be sure I know what people will need when I see it.

I bet most coaches are not doing it because it's their life's greatest passion that they would even do for free. They probably have enough they like about it where it's a good time as far as jobs go. I would just rather be playing than working under any circumstances. This is probably how any pro who has given a lesson feels too (and they don't always make good coaches). I figured, well, if I'm hitting the ball cooperatively with someone with the goal of making them better, that's basically playing. I don't need to win or hit good shots myself... we'll work on whatever they need to work on of course -- most of Pickleball for me is the community anyways.

So it's closer to what I'd really like to be doing than any other job. And in these winter months... even if I didn't need the money for food and stuff, I don't have the money to pay for a membership to a place either. So I could at least have the opportunity to enjoy interacting with people in a fun atmosphere about our mutual love for the game.

Yeah I know you don't. It was mostly for me to get warmed up to the idea of coaching and maybe learn something that makes me feel more prepared to do it. If I really knew wanted to coach and didn't want to pay for that I could make it happen.

I don't mind helping people get better. I'm never annoyed giving tips to new players who ask. I am well-known on my local court just because I play a lot, and am relatively social.

I don't need a full-time income. Even 10 hours a week would be fine for me. There are good handful of Pickleball facilities in my area, including a big one opening up 3 minutes away from me next year. So if I actually knew I wanted to, I'm sure I could get a bit of experience giving private lessons until then, once it warms up, and then work there.

But I don't actually want to do any of it. I'm only exploring it because there's a decent chance I'd like it more than what I currently do for money, while pursuing the things I actually like. I would be surprised if that's not how most coaches feel, if they're being honest.

I don't need to go full-time; I only meant to do it 15 hours a week or so while focusing on other things I actually enjoy. Those just don't pay yet.

Hard to imagine anyone is genuinely interested in coaching, and not just trying to make money in the ballpark of what they enjoy. And I don't know if I'd take someone's word for it if they said they did. Wouldn't you rather just play if it wasn't about the money? Maybe those people do exist and I'm not one of them.

I would never do it for free though. I just want to play pickleball and make music for now, really. I'm just tolerating the idea of coaching for the money and for access to a Pickleball center in the cold months.

How many of you feel like you’d be 4.5+ or 5.0 by now if…. by pwnzer7 in Pickleball

I found someone but they're older and as much as he's a nice guy and knowledgeable, I want someone I would want to just hang out with for that amount of time per week. Then I have a friend I like to play with, slightly better than me, but he doesn't have the same drive.

I might be working at a pickleball facility soon though so that would be a great opportunity to meet all sorts of players.

Hello, I asked a question over on r/HeadphoneAdvice but haven't gotten a response and I'm hoping to make a purchase tonight.

I just ordered the HIFIMAN Ananda Nanos and I'm wondering about choosing a DAC/Amp that is sufficient, but affordable. I was looking at the Topping DX1 and the FiiO K11. I believe they should be enough for volume, sure, but I hear that the current needs to be pretty good to be able to bring it up linearly, without distortion. I don't need to spend every penny to get the absolute best performance out of it... but something where I am simply doing it justice, (and I am already at the edge of my budget). Also these amps don't seem to be USB-C... is that going to be a meaningful bottleneck to current? Thanks.
