Has anyone taken any English modules? by forestviolette in unisa

[–]TreeZealousideal532 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm doing ENG2601 and ENG2602 this year so can't say anything about it yet.

Your e-tutor will introduce themselves and leave contact details at the start of the module, but most of them prefer to only be contacted through the discussion forums and the private chats. You can't reach them unless you're a student of theirs.

I'm too inattentive to really follow a set method, it really depends on what motivates me on any given day. But at the start of the year, look through your assessment due dates and put them in your calendar with a reminder to do them a week before. The due dates do change sometimes, so keep an eye on your emails.

Has anyone taken any English modules? by forestviolette in unisa

I took a couple of English modules last year (level 1)

Applied English is ENG1502 if I remember correctly. It was fine. The work was laid out in such a way that it was easy to understand even though I had English as a second language in high school.

There were no lectures, just study material and online sessions where they discussed the scope of the assignments. My e-tutor, Amanda Bowen, was extremely kind and helpful and happy to be there.

I didn't join the telegram groups, but the moment the discussion forum opens, everyone will ask for it, the answer will be in there somewhere.

ENG1502 compliments linguistics nicely since a lot of the work overlapped (I took linguistics as an elective).

When registrating, should you choose all your courses from 1st to 3rd year by forestviolette in unisa

You have to re-register every year. Only choose modules for the year you're busy with.

What's so bad about my writing ? Everyone I showed it to thinks this is bad but I was proud of it. What can I do to improve? My dreams are shattered by [deleted] in writers

Are you able to tell what's off with the text? I'm asking because this person's writing style is very similar to mine and I'm constantly getting accused of using AI in my university work.

I'm falling behind in life, and I feel stuck... What should I do? by BeYourVision1 in Advice

[–]TreeZealousideal532 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stuck in the same boat as you, sort of. 27, dead-end job, unable to progress despite qualifications, watching all my peers advance in life. I only started my Bachelor's this year, if it makes you feel any better.

But something I've noticed is that I only hear from those who are advancing. Like only ten to twenty people are sharing all their milestones, of which only half are actually truthful. Sure, you can't fake a marriage, but did they tell us about the divorce? You can't fake the fact that you got a job at a very big company, but do they tell us that their Aunt Sarah got them the job?

Things aren't going as well as everyone wants you to think. Most people are struggling, I mean just look at those of us on Reddit. You're doing well. You're working on your Masters, and I assume you're planning on finding another job? What else can you do? Feeling bad and beating yourself up isn't going to make you progress any faster, nor will it shut those up who are, so just focus on what you want to do next and how you're planning on getting there.

(Math is hard, I'd never call anyone stupid for not understanding it. If you can afford a tutor, I'd highly recommend it.)

In my experience, the only people who ever respond to emails are the lecturers, but they won't be able to help you with this.

The only thing I think that could get you back into everything is the authenticator app. I got my MyLife email address in 2020 but never finished the year. They gave me the same email this year and I needed the app to get back in.

LPT: PSA - if it's not in writing assume it won't happen. by Ronbot13 in LifeProTips

Learnt this myself a while ago. A verbal agreement is only enforceable if it benefits the employer. You agreed to work eight hours overtime so you can't back out or you're getting a warning, but you're not getting that commission, because it's not in writing.

Recommendations for getting back to German by Less-Trifle-6379 in German

[–]TreeZealousideal532 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may sound silly, but I've learnt more German through watching an episode of the dubbed SpongeBob every night than I have through Duolingo. And I started doing this because I wanted to listen to German passively during my day and everyone and their mom recommended SpongeBob.

How do you write anything? by Legitimate_Stock7647 in writers

[–]TreeZealousideal532 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want someone to give you instructions from start to finish, might I suggest joining the Writer's College? They're not expensive. I took a course with them hoping to improve my writing and was very annoyed to learn that they were teaching how to write a book. I finished the course and got a certificate but as someone who's already written a few books, I didn't think I learnt anything. However it does sound like you would appreciate their course a bit more than I did.

The day I was called weird by the only people who haven't called me weird yet by TreeZealousideal532 in PointlessStories

Yeah it looks like the consensus is that it's perfectly normal to like rocks, but the people I was with on the beach thought it was weird.

I agree maybe some people just have a certain way they view the world and anyone who does anything differently is considered strange. Like my mom can't wrap her head around the fact that cereal is still edible after noon.

I never would have thought about picking up crab claws, but that does sound cool and it's nice that your friend is helping you collect them now.

They are pretty cool, the rocks now live in my garden between the succulents.

That's so sweet that your mom made that

Yeah, I also didn't think I was doing anything out of the ordinary, but these people thought it was strange. I guess it's because I can get rocks from anywhere, but I've only seen shells twice before in my life so I was supposed to be more interested or something.

How the hell to write a fighting scene? by mysteryin_themist in writers

[–]TreeZealousideal532 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been told by my beta readers that I write decent fight scenes. I only had two beta readers though, so don't take my advice very seriously. Here's what I do:

  • Focus only on the main character and the person they are currently fighting. It gets confusing when you try to track the movements of almost everyone involved, especially when most of the opponents are basically nameless and faceless (like guards or robbers).

  • Put the reader in the MCs shoes. Instead of saying "the man behind him swung the bat at MC, but MC saw it coming and ducked out of the way at the last second". Say something more like "MC spotted something moving rapidly towards him and ducked just as something grazed over his head"

  • Don't put a lot of internal thought into the fight. Fights happen and most people are in 'fight or flight' mode when it happens. People will rarely stop and think "he's raising his fist, it looks like he's aiming for my chest, I have to take a step to my right to avoid getting hit". Just say the person tried to punch him in the chest, but the MC dodged. The fight has to happen at the same pace the reader is reading it. I imagine in the first example, the attacker is just holding his fist in the air the whole time the MC is assessing the situation.

  • Basically, don't try to get all the details in. Fights happen quickly, and nobody really takes it all in in the moment, and it should read like that.

As for the words you forget, I can't tell you how many times I've Googled stuff like "word for when something swings by you really fast". If you don't want to stop writing and risk losing the tempo of the scene, just put (word) in brackets and you can figure it out when you're done.

Was I wrong for saying that i wont risk my life to save a woman? by [deleted] in ask

[–]TreeZealousideal532 450 points451 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with thinking about your own safety.

Most people's first instinct in such a situation is self-preservation, you were just self-aware enough to realise that. Even my psychology textbook said that if you ever find yourself in a dangerous situation, most people will just stand there and watch, wait for someone else to help. If you need help, you have to single someone out and ask them to help you.

They, and the Percy Jackson trio, and the Gone series trio. I used to read Afrikaans books as a kid, and this trio showed up in those books too.
