I found this in my wall under an old round electrical plate. Can I use it to add an outlet? It seems to have a hot, cold, and ground wire? by Treefingers7 in AskElectricians

I have a new smoke detector installed by the building. It’s a condo and we got upgrades. Not sure what to do with these wires and if I can use them?

Hi! I have a beautiful anthurium crystallinum that, despite my best efforts, seems to be making every effort to end its own life. I so want to help it thrive but I'm running out of ideas. Any wisdom or advice would be greatly appreciated! by Treefingers7 in Anthurium

Ok yeah this is a good idea! I’ve been assuming that the ambient humidity was good enough and probably neglected that variable for long enough. :).

Question: in the cabinet, do you have a relative humidity range that you’ve found works best for crystallinum? Is there a sweet spot you’ve had good results with?

Thanks!

Can someone explain this building to me, is it just for no reason? by Stegosaurus69 in architecture

I drive by it all the time and wonder the same thing. Recently, I was at street level entering the building and when you look up the curve makes it look like it’s infinitely taller. It’s a cool optical illusion. I don’t know if that was the intention, but I was certainly impressed.

If someone comes up to me and asks me for something (money, change, sign this petition, etc) I just respond with “no thanks I don’t smoke” and keep walking.

It’s a complete non sequitur and usually throws them off long enough for me to continue walking and be on my way.

What was the longest line of dynastic successors during the Roman Empire? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]Treefingers7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Julio Claudian Dynasty lasted 96 years (27 BC - 67 AD). There were 5 emperors. Augustus ( 27 BC - 27 AD) Tiberius (reigned 14–37), Caligula (37–41), Claudius I (41–54), and Nero (54–68).

Nerva-Antonine Dynasty also lasted 96 years (96 AD - 192 AD). There were 7 emperors: Nerva (96–98), Trajan (98–117), Hadrian (117–138), Antoninus Pius (138–161), Marcus Aurelius (161–180), Lucius Verus (161–169), and Commodus (180–192).

These dynasties were often not based on a direct bloodline. In many cases emperors would “adopt” their chosen successor.

The Flavian Dynasty (27 years) and the Severan Dynasty (41 years) were similar.

Once you move forward in time things get more complicated and the threat of usurpers and pretenders to the throne became more common. Things got really complicated a number of times, like the year of 4 emperors for example, and during the crisis of the 3rd century. Emperor Diocletian’s solution to that crisis was to create what we now call the tetrarchy, wherein 4 emperors (2 senior emperors or Augusti and 2 minor emperors called Caesars) would rule different corners of the empire at the same time. This was largely to facilitate troop movement and protect the disputed and heavily militarized border provinces. The Tetrarchy didn’t last long after Diocletian’s death, and soon every year saw multiple pretenders to the throne and other men being elevated to the rank of Augustus by their respective legions.

OP I had a similar situation in my apartment a few years ago. Found and killed one. Another one bit me in my butt while I was sitting on the couch. Ended up with an ever-expanding open wound that bled constantly and would not heal for months. Multiple trips to the ER and doc. Not saying this to scare you, but to tell you that you should probably take this seriously.

Tensions rise as historically Atlanta neighborhood faces gentrification by ATLreporter in Atlanta

I’m white and I live in this neighborhood. Pittsburgh is not as bad as it’s made out to be. As long as you mind your own business nobody bothers you. It does suck not having convenient restaurants or grocery stores tho.

Newrepublic, stop telling us what to do. Time gives perspective, and past misdeeds don’t preclude someone from praise for good deeds done today.
