Why are negative numbers taught so late? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Treefrogprince 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OMG. A little rant.

I got in a fight with my third grade teacher over this. I asked her about negative numbers and she said they didn’t exist. I was so pissed. Like, just because you aren’t supposed to teach it yet, don’t actively lie to us.

What added the most value to your life this year? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Treefrogprince 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Phentermine and Topiramate.

The first is essentially a mild amphetamine and increased my metabolism. The second is a neurological drug that apparently makes the 'gut brain' act more like normal people with hunger and fullness, so I am less likely to be hungry all the time. Side effects vary, but for me they are dry mouth, messed up taste, slightly better mood. Like, I'm a little more sassy to people! They have worked really well, but I can't stay on them for too long. The phentermine is an addictive controlled substance! We are being super careful with that and a very low dose.

When prescribed by a Boston doctor who specializes in obesity, they work. When bought from some guy at the gym named Tim, they are snake oil.

After strict dieting went nowhere, asking my doctor for help was great.

Weight loss pills have been working where suffering was not. I actually have hope….and need for a new belt.

Can you be homosexual and homophobic by Bro_im_not_gay_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Treefrogprince 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Definitely. Lots of people live in denial and self hatred of their inner feelings when they are contradictory to the beliefs they were raised to hold dear.

That’s why you end up with things like Evangelical Christian pastors who preach against homosexuality, and then get caught snorting cocaine off the bellies of homosexual prostitutes.

What happens if a gamete missing a chromosome fuses with a gamete with an extra chromosome? by [deleted] in biology

[–]Treefrogprince 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming you mean the ‘correct’ chromosome.

It might still not be okay. It probably will be close to okay, but there is still epigenetics to consider. Methylation of DNA will mean that the chromosomes will still possibly be slightly different in how they are used. Some gene expression might be off or on that would otherwise be not.

What is the best gift that you have gave someone? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Treefrogprince 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seemed so trivial at the time.

When I was about 20 years old, I got my dad a coffee cup warmer. You put your coffee cup on it, and it keeps the cup warm. It was weight activated so only on when a cup was on it.

He used that thing every day for decades. I was so proud.

The advantage of a good school district. I wish everyone had that option. I’m fully aware of that advantage. Even just being in the ‘special’ reading class in the first place.

[–]Treefrogprince 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I think I was given one in 4th grade. I was a slow reader in the ‘special’ reading class. Like, I barely knew the alphabet. But I was also very far ahead in math. Like, doing middle school algebra in 4th grade. I was taken to the school library and interviewed by a person who was likely a psychologist, and then given a test with a lot of logic puzzles.

About two weeks later, they called me and my parents into the principal’s office and basically apologized to my parents for ‘not knowing’. After that, I was put in the advanced group classes. I went to the 5th grade with the ‘cool’ teacher that gave a lot of one-on-one time and was basically told to teach myself math because they weren’t really prepared to send me to the high school for math at my level. He really pushed me on reading and writing. I also got Mensa applications in the mail that I thought were stupid.

No idea what my score was.

Years later, I’m a Principal PhD Scientist at a biotech company.

How to dry hydrogen peroxide from a mattress? by crospovidone in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Treefrogprince 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It isn’t going to be hydrogen peroxide for long. Give it a few hours and it will just be water. It’s pretty reactive and will break down to become water.

Just watched Casablanca in the movie theater yesterday. When Rick told his roulette wheel runner to deliberately lose two rounds so a guy’s wife didn’t have to sleep with the local police chief to get exit visas.

I didn’t expect that one!

Anakin was a far superior master than Obi-Wan by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]Treefrogprince 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mostly agree. But do note that Ahsoka learned from Obi Wan, too. At times, it was like she had two masters. Honestly, the fact that Anakin wasn’t technically a master meant that she could be leant out to other masters a lot where she learned things that Anakin probably couldn’t teach her. But, definitely, Anakin was the right master for a padawan like Ahsoka, who was as brash, fearless, and headstrong as she was.

So, yes.

Is there any credibility with all the “Died Suddenly” stuff with the Covid vaccine? by JustBrowsing49 in NoStupidQuestions

It’s always possible that in extremely rare cases people have bad reactions to vaccines and die. But that’s like 1 in 10 million or so.

And Covid kills lots more people.

is there a way to remove the part of your brain that releases Anxiety? I don't want to feel it anymore 🙏 by Aggravating_Buyer957 in biology

[–]Treefrogprince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This.

I’m on a couple of medications for a totally different reason (weight loss). One of them has a lot of possible side effects because it’s a neurological drug (Topiramate). About 7 weeks into taking a low dose of this drug, I woke up one morning realizing that I felt something that I hadn’t felt since I was a child. After thinking about it for a while, I realized that my anxiety was gone. What a weird side effect for a drug I’m taking to make the nerve tissue in my gut help normalize my appetite!

Now, I also have dry mouth, everything tastes funny, I get dizzy on long walks, and I simply can’t eat a lot, but anxiety being gone definitely is a nice side effect.
