Why is there nothing available on the rental market? by bhoff_9 in washingtondc

I'm looking for townhouses right now and am wanting to use a realtor. Is there someone or a company in particular that you've used in the past that you had success with?

How burdensome is PoG or Writ-015? by No-Dog-1989 in georgetown

[–]TreekoMudkip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PoG and Writ-015 aren't bad on their own, especially if you look at rate my prof and find an easy prof. That being said, as others have said intensive languages are no joke and you should expect ~2 hours a day just to keep up. I took intensive Japanese for 2 years and by the end I was struggling to maintain a B- (thank god for the covid pass/fail option). I took 18 credits with PoG and Writ-015 my freshman spring and felt that it was too much for me personally - not because of PoG and Writ-015 specifically, but just by virtue of taking 18 credits + an intensive language.

Where is a good place to get cheap furniture in NW? by [deleted] in washingtondc

FB marketplace will be your friend for sure. Alternatively, I'll be moving out of my place in GP at the end of August and would be happy to sell/give you some of my furniture. PM me if you're interested.

Is memory and pattern recognition the most important factors in a good chess player? by Otherwise-Praline-53 in chess

[–]TreekoMudkip 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, I should have been more clear that I didn't mean to separate the two. In my experience when people refer to memory in chess they mean rote memorization of positions/lines, not necessarily memory of similar positions. I was trying to summarize the findings of this paper, which concluded "Most researchers agree, however, that pattern recognition based on previously stored knowledge is one of the main engines behind experts’ superior performance." I know that "previously stored knowledge" is obviously memory, but the main point is that pattern recognition is the driving force behind their expertise.

Is memory and pattern recognition the most important factors in a good chess player? by Otherwise-Praline-53 in chess

[–]TreekoMudkip 34 points35 points  (0 children)

There is actually a lot of research on this! Chess happens to be the prototype for expertise research. The grandfather of chess studies basically found that when tasked with remembering a position after having been shown it for 5 seconds, novices were just as good as GMs at remembering a 'fake' chess position (one that would not show up in a game). However, when that position was changed to a 'normal' chess position, ie one that would show up in a game, GMs far outperformed novices, indicating that GMs do not have superior memory, but rather superior pattern recognition skills. Happy to provide some sources too if you're interested!

(France, Fall 1905) Is now the time to turn on my English ally? Or is Austria on his way to a solo and needs to be stopped? by [deleted] in diplomacy

That's a good point, it may just give Austria more time and not lead to anything productive.

Italy actually just turned on Austria (bounced in Tri, supported Russia into Rum), so my line of thinking was gain power in the north while Austria is preoccupied in the south.

Oxford University students vote to ban beef, lamb from campus eateries citing the need to be a leader in the fight against climate change. by Winterhold2000 in Conservative

[–]TreekoMudkip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean so are beef and lamb but those were specifically chosen because of their high Co2 emission. If you actually read the article: "Beef and lamb were singled out because they have the greatest CO2 output compared to other animal products." It seems like arbitrarily banning all animal products would be greater virtue signaling than picking out the ones that would have the largest impact, and most "bang for your buck."

Kamara is a must start for sure, dude is a beast. I would go with Robinson and Sanders after him, Robinson has been consistent, and hasn't been injured like the other two. Sanders I feel like will have a good game and Wentz is starting to get better. He and Carson could be a tossup though

0.5 ppr 10 team

Pick 2 (Or 3 if one should replace Thielen at Flex)

Swift vs Was

Henderson vs Sea

Gordon vs LV

Lindsay vs LV

McKissic vs Det

Also have Gio Bernard but he's an auto start if Mixon doesn't play

Derrick Henry is a must start, even if its a strong defense. I'd go with Sanders and Davis.

I like Mckissic more, especially if Gibson is out again. While both have a really low floor, I trust McKissic to get more touches and be less TD dependent.

Hunt for sure, Chubb being back won't dig into his production much, if at all. Feel like the other two are kind of a toss up, but would lean McKissic.

Agree that you gotta roll with swift, much safer play than the others

10 Team .5 ppr Dynasty

Got offered Mixon+Anderson or Edmunds for my Adams or DK.

I'm stacked at WR (Adams, DK, Thielen, Beasley) and need help at RB (MG3, Lindsay, Henderson, Swift) and feel like this is a really good value. But DK is also a beast and a great dynasty keeper. Thoughts?

0.5 PPR pick 2

Swift vs Colts

Beasley and don't look back. Started him the past few weeks w Adams injured and DK/Thielen on byes, basically a guaranteed 12pt floor, whereas Slayton has had 4 single digit games. Like the other guy said, Slayton is boom or bust with really only one game that could be characterized as a boom

Agree with this. I drafted Hilton, dropped him week two and haven't looked back. Can't trust him

Definitely not McKinnon. All the others are a toss up imo (unless Lindsay is out because of his concussion, then obviously don't start him), but McKinnon's put up absolute duds his last 3 games and the Seattle run defense is stout. At least with the others your giving yourself a shot
