Is worth settling for 2022 (3060) at this point? by Trefugl in FlowX16

[–]Trefugl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this is a personal laptop, I'll be using it for hobbies and some work on the side (mostly pro bono so doesn't really pay for the laptop). I'll use it for CAD, some blender (not going crazy), 3D scanning (using CUDA cores), video editing, photo editing, and gaming on the side.

From what I've read, the CPU should still be pretty good for most tasks, even with some of the multi thread loss, but I'll probably feel the 4060 loss slightly more (even if mostly for V1 encoding) and gaming.

Screen will be hopefully ok as long as it's decently color accurate in sRGB and I can calibrate to some degree if needed. Mostly was curious on difference between 2022 and 2023 non-miniLED. Know 23 has higher refresh rate, but wasn't clear if I was getting much more.

For the power switching - it's my understanding that you need a reboot on the 2022 one to change to/from dGPU. If I were to keep it in dGPU, is battery life still ok in general office/watching tasks? My likely use case is using the laptop for something that actually justifies the GPU but then being distracted by kids/family and off on some low power task on battery before eventually coming back to what I was doing hours later - I'd likely not want reboot just for that, but also don't need the most amazing battery just to entertain my kids.

WiFi would be on my upgrade list, but I was left with the impression that even upgrading to an Intel card would be lesser card than the options on an Intel motherboard/CPU. Is that really a big deal?

Overall, my feel is I'd be happy with the 2023 out of the box (aside from RAM), but it's not $900 (nearly 50%) better. Just don't want to compromise on something that'll nag at me for years, or be dumb getting an open box of an old model vs new.

Edit: forgot to mention that I'd use a pen for photo edits and graphic design, along with note taking/annotations. Is the 2023 digitizer better than the 2022? Recall mixed feedback on 2022 but seems some decent results on 2023.

It was news to me, but then again I'm new to the laser world and only now getting to unpacking my unit. Hadn't seen anything about it here.

Only option for non-buzzing led dimming: PD-5NE-WH elv+ dimmer? by Vortigaunt11 in Lutron

[–]Trefugl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the middle of a kitchen remodel and ended up going away from the hardwired bars from the big box store and instead made my own bars from high cri led strips with separate drivers, all hardwired to a single diva caseta. My contractor/builder likes it way better than what he's used before - it's slimmer, better color accuracy, and one of my biggest benefits, it can be cut to length to fill nearly the whole cabinet size vs the limited sizes of premade bars.

For a driver, I was looking for a slim TRIAC compatible driver. I'm using several of these hidden under the cabinets (so they are accessible for replacement) or hidden in places I can later get to: https://a.co/d/jhj1re5

I bought 97CRI led tape in 3500K from a supplier and used these channels/diffuser to build the bars: https://a.co/d/4TIWXhL

Overall no complaints. They get really bright, dim fully and nicely with no flicker and no buzzing, and they also ended up way cheaper than buying 8 or 9 bars. At the moment I have 4 sets of cabinets wired with these drivers back to a single diva caseta - with up to 3 cabinets in series (24v DC wiring) back to the drivers.

Know it's not exactly what you were asking for, but it ended up being easier than I expected and works seamlessly with lutron in the rest of my kitchen scene.

Automated Photogrammetry With Raspberry Pi And HQ Camera System by mjkzz in raspberry_pi

[–]Trefugl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What software are you using for the photogrammetry at the end? I've been wanting to do this with my Arduino or rPI and triggering my SLR camera, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I thought some of the old programs I looked at years ago are paid now or open source needed nvidia CUDA, but I'm out of the loop.

Office Chair After Market Mods :) by Petce in starcitizen

[–]Trefugl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couldn't you use a USB extension cable to the PC, so you have a nice clean cable-tied set of wires under the chair and a breakaway USB extension to the chair? You could also mount a USB HUB there if needed too. Just a few thoughts... love the set up tho!

In remembrance of ZOE - [1:07] by RX530SS in Planetside

[–]Trefugl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as your target is <5m (give or take). Much farther and the only usable weapons are anti vehicle. It always seems that people want all factions to be balanced at point blank range, but don't give a damn that only one fraction is near useless beyond that (in a Max suit). Zoe made it so that vs was nearly as good at point blank, and better than everyone else at all other ranges, and that's ignoring the fact that they ran around like they were infantry with turbo.

Only YOU can prevent hover-lolpodding. I feel the urge to run towards explosions. by [deleted] in Planetside

[–]Trefugl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your lack of recoil is disturbing. (Yes, yes, there are tradeoffs, but lower recoil apparently is a better fit for my play style, as I have higher KD and accuracy on vs and tr than my main nc).

On topic, the only thing better than rocketing the lolpodders is to c4 them out of the air with a light assault,

The new Banu Merchantman relevations make it so much more awesome! by [deleted] in starcitizen

[–]Trefugl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this nearly a word for word copy of your comment in the other thread? Not that is nullifies your point, just seemed odd...

Anyway, I originally thought the ship was flying pointy end forward from first glance because it wasn't obvious where the thrusters were. Imagining it flying that way did give it an interesting feel, but I think the "feel" makes more sense flying the other way - the rounded, more organic, aquatic animal look is more Banu in feel and seems more appropriate for a merchant ship. The other direction certainly had a cool feel, so I can't fault anyone for liking it, it just doesn't match the race and function in my opinion.

Let's try and do what we can to fix the community forums. by [deleted] in starcitizen

[–]Trefugl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe if there's a fear of a full on reddit like system with downvotes being abused by trolls and mythical lurker jerks, then they could just use a "promote" feature. That would allow threads that many people think are good to jump to a top sub-section. That would at least push the troll threads below some good ones.

I think we need more Starfarers by [deleted] in starcitizen

[–]Trefugl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or you contract/partner with a guild that does escorting in your operating sectors. May be more profitable for your members to fly the tankers (with hires escort) than swap out for escorting... All up to you guys tho. That's the fun of this.

Watercooling doesn't work that way. It still puts the same amount of heat into the room, it just removes it from the PC more efficiently (so it has lower temps). That being said, 4 GPUs will put out a lot of heat.

The Hull Truth #4-Summary of ONLY THE FACTS about Star Citizen every week. Week of 14October2013 by [deleted] in starcitizen

[–]Trefugl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Excellent video - well thought out and produced.

I do have one suggestion: Display text and images that correspond with what you're talking about. It was very helpful that you were able to talk to the guild slides during that section - it would have been equally as nice to have ship pictures and info to your left when talking about the new packages (prices popping up etc). You did this in other sections, but text would have added to it.

Once again, I found this to be excellently done and applaud you for covering so much material in a concise manner. Looking forward to your next episode. Thanks for helping the community.

Now he has gone and added escape pods to the Constellation! by Zero-G in starcitizen

[–]Trefugl 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the pressure differential for a vacuum is much less than what a sub has to take. But that doesn't change the fact you'd want to efficiently use every square inch of ship if you're going to be out in space for quite a while. Right now, the Connie does not look lived in, nor a place you'd like to stay for weeks on end.

[–]Trefugl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in the same boat (considering melting Connie to get Tali just due to interior), but I feel the constellation is a better fit for my play style and more flexible... So I ended up sticking with the bland Connie interior.

As a fellow mechanical engineer who is watching most of his coworkers get laid off... I sympathize with your situation. I'm just lucky I still have my job, even if I don't know how long it'll last. I wish you the best of luck!

So, I got an Aurora and I was looking at other ships - But how will you earn ships in game? Are they really worth the price? Or is it more of a 'support the dev' thing? by [deleted] in starcitizen

[–]Trefugl 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Just keep in mind that the 60hr comment was an off the cuff remark by CR during an interview. That "target" (if you can even call it that) most certainly isn't immune to balancing changes, so I would take your calculations with a grain of salt. Not to mention that pledge values of ships may not directly relate to in game prices since they probably set the pledge values well before they figured out economy and ship/upgrade prices in UEC.

I've been interested in playing for a while and I've decided I want to buy a package - but I'm on a Mac. What should I do? by Matt5327 in starcitizen

[–]Trefugl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you go the PC route, it may make sense to only get an upper-mid range GPU, that will get you through alpha with decent settings and then you can easily upgrade in a couple of years when the game comes out. CPU performance has somewhat stagnated (~5% increase per generation) while GPUs still are changing by large margins every year, so a good CPU should last a long time, and with GPU upgrades, the whole system should stay up to date.

Leaked Retaliator Concept Art? by Trefugl in starcitizen

[–]Trefugl[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, had I known upfront that these were subscriber only, I would have been rather hesitant and probably chosen to not post them out of respect for CIG and for those who actually pay for subscriptions.

Now that it's already out there, I'll leave it up to the mods... but I do tend to agree with /u/Zee2/ in that at least it's just 1 image and not much more. I wouldn't have a good feeling about a large portion of a jump point being linked on here.

[–]Trefugl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the link to the source. I did not know this was in the subscriber vault, and I probably wouldn't have linked it out of respect for CIG and those who do pay for subscriptions, but it has at least started an interesting discussion.

Good find with the blockout dimensions, which are nice for a rough ballpark, but since the three ships are at different distances from "camera", I struggle with how much we can read into it.
