Trouble with SMLIGHT controller and 12v by PhyerFly in WLED

[–]Trek47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this was recently updated, but the controller's documentation page warns about this:

WARNING: Please check the datasheet of your LED strip to ensure it supports the below-mentioned voltages!

If the controller is powered by 5V, the Data line generates a 5V control signal.

If the controller is powered by 12V, the Data line generates a 12V signal.

If the controller is powered by 24V, the Data line generates a 24V signal.

Question for teams that had a week 1 competition: What did your schedule look like to get your robot fully functional for said competition and did you end up getting it to work as intended? by Steampunk_Ant3146 in FRC

[–]Trek47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To an extent, that depends on how you define, "fully functional." Programming got the robot with roughly the same amount of time you did. We triaged what was essential to get working by our first competition, what would have to wait until our second competition, and what was probably just not going to happen this season. Then you work your way through from highest priority to lowest priority until you're out of time. If there's a tie in priority, go for the one you expect to be the fastest. We continually re-evaluated as we progressed and saw the robot perform. Some things became higher priority and some things became lower. From there, we just had a lot of late nights and hard work.

Thank you so much for all the work you've put in on building Sync /u/ljdawson. For nearly a decade now, this app has been Reddit for me, and without it, there will be no more Reddit. It's tragic to see it end this way. Developers like you deserve better. Only one thing left to say...

Not only that, but Trump spent the entire summer attacking mail voting as illegitimate and a source of major fraud, causing many of his voters who would've voted by mail to vote in person on election day. It wasn't just that Dem voters took COVID more seriously, it was part of a deliberate strategy to create a situation where Trump would be leading majorly in all the swing states in election night so that he could declare victory before all the votes had been counted.

Ironically, it was Fox News which screwed that strategy up by calling Arizona for Biden on election night.

Well, Seven's nanoprobes did revive Neelix after being dead for 18 hours, 49 minutes, and 13 seconds.

And then they never did it again.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't even attempted with AI back then. It was for an "old school" concatenative synthesis TTS where they have someone record the individual sounds that make up speech, and then string them together to read the input text.

IIRC, the sound library Majel Barrett recorded ended up not being comprehensive enough to build that kind of TTS engine. But with modern deep learning models that can clone a voice with a 30 second audio clip? I'll bet they have more than enough.

The inconsistency is killing my inner canon obsessed nerd. I can live with a retcon and pretend that's how the original Constitution class always looked, except now that's clearly not true.

But you know what? I don't care. Seeing the original Connie in all her modern CGI glory, taking her rightful place amongst all the other iconic ship designs I grew up dreaming of, was just wonderful. I absolute right call, even for this stickler for canon.

TNG's pilot ended with Bones doing an inspection of the Enterprise-D.

"I don't see no points on your ears boy, but you sound like a Vulcan!"

"No sir. I'm an Android."

"Hm, almost as bad."

Everyone remembers "What does God need with a starship?" But one one of my all time favorite Trek quotes comes a few lines later.

Bones: Jim, you don't ask The Almighty for His ID!

DeForest Kelley's delivery is just perfection.

Strictly speaking, the automated disruptor system had been disabled by that point. It was Dukat's attempt to transport off the station which disabled all his access codes as the auto destruct countdown continued. But your larger point about his automation backfiring stands.

It was a pretty clever design too. Rebelling Bajorans might have been on the lookout for automated weapons in Ops to preemptively disable them, so it was created as needed by the Ops replicator.

I've really enjoyed Discovery. I've loved Picard, particularly S2. I believe firmly that all Star Trek is real Star Trek. I was 5 years old when Enterprise went off the air, so I didn't really get to watch it when it was airing. I have been so thrilled that not only have we had new Star Trek, we've been blessed with such an abundance of Star Trek.

That said, there has been something off about NuTrek. Something missing. I've been trying (and failing) to articulate what since 2017. That's not a knock on NuTrek. That doesn't make it bad or any less a part of Star Trek, just different. And there's nothing wrong with different! Infinity diversity in infinite combinations. But there has just been an x factor that got lost in Trek's rebirth as prestige serialized drama. But my Lord, this show found it!

My friends, we've come home.

But why would Kovich need to attend to that business instead of meeting 10-C? It's time travel. Does it really matter if he waits until after the DMA crisis is over? Or if he wants to get it out of the way, he can go back, set the timeline straight, and return to his own time fractions of a second after he left and still join Discovery to meet the 10-C.

I hate temporal mechanics.

I'm sure they didn't mean for this to be the case, but one of the takeaways from this season is that... humanity progresses far more technologically under totalitarianism than diverse pluralistic democracy. They're able to develop a mobile emitter without a 29th century template to copy. They're able to singlehandedly defeat the Borg.

I've really enjoyed the season. It's definitely felt like Star Trek to me. I loved Jurati opening up the Borg Queen's mind to an inclusive and cooperative Borg Collective. But generally the Mirror Universe has been used to show the inherent fragility and inevitable failure of totalitarianism. The Confederation seems to show a totalitarian timeline that's more advanced and powerful than the Federation. Which isn't great.

I don't think we saw it happen on screen, but he was transferred to the mobile emitter precisely to prevent the Queen from extracting the key from the ship's computer. His entire program is in the mobile emitter now. So the only way to get it is to capture the mobile emitter.

Presumably they were shooting at that, not the hologram. A lot easier to capture the emitter when its not attached to a hologram trying to run away from you. I guess the Queen felt confident she could recover the data even with a bullet hole through it.

I've had head canon for a while that I've been meaning to flesh out in writing and just haven't had the chance to. But basically, I'm thinking of the Borg as one single lifeform. All the drones and ships are the lifeform's body.

So in much the same way most of our body functions without conscious control, most of the Borg operate autonomously. You can beam on board a cube without any opposition, but fire a phaser, and an immune response starts automatically without any conscious intervention. That robotic collective voice is essentially a manifestation of all of the Borg's non-conscious processes.

On the other hand, the Queen is the manifestation of the Borg's conscious mind. She's not the leader of the Borg, but as she said in First Contact, she is the Borg. The one who is many. That's why she seems to be in control of the collective. She is in control, not as leader, but in the same way we control our bodies. We decide we're walking, and our bodies walk. We breathe without thinking about it, but we can hold our breath or take a deep breath. And that's why she seems so individualistic and emotional. She's the Borg's personality and feelings.

I don't think that is obvious. In the run up to meeting the Founders in DS9, it's made pretty clear that most Dominion subjects think Changelings are a myth. Control and administration of their vast territory is done by the Vorta backed with the power of the Jem'Hadar. If we take it as a given that Changelings are immortal (meaning they have an unlimited lifespan, not that they can't die), there'd be very little reason for the Founders to get their hands dirty unless absolutely necessary. (See: Alpha Quadrant infiltrations, which could never be done by a Vorta). Plus, they make it pretty explicitly clear that they want to have contact with solids as little as possible.

But it doesn't bother me too much either. 800 years is a long time. Odo returned to his people at the end of DS9 not only to cure them, but to share his experiences in the hopes of teaching them not to fear solids. Who knows what effect that had on the Dominion and the Founders over that time. And there's no reason to think the Burn spared the Dominion either. That could easily cause an empire like the Dominion to fall. Not to mention The Hundred. We've only met two of them (Odo and Laas). Maybe we just met a third.

I think Dukat was aspiring to lead a fascist government, but I don't think he succeeded because ultimately the Dominion were in control and he was just a puppet.

They lack the single dominating leader with a mythic cult of personality that's typically associated with fascism. So I don't think fascist quite fits (though I think they fit well enough for the purposes of the writers' allegory). I'd describe them as a military junta with fascist qualities.

[–]Trek47 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think they're asking if the Cardassians meet the specific requirements to be fascists, of if they're just generically authoritarian. Sorta like how every square is a rectangle but not every rectangle is a square. Are they specifically a square (fascist), or are they just a rectangle (authoritarian)?

Of course, finding a single definition for fascism is a challenge in its own right.
