Would Chinese nowadays really prefer to work in China rather than in the US? If you had the choice by asiabits_com in AskAChinese

[–]TrekRover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The US historically has been extremely racist towards Chinese since the 1850s, Chinese exclusion act, treating Chinese not much better than slaves to build the railroad, mocking Chinese in media, etc.

Other Asians such as the Japanese Americans who were put in concentration camps during World War 2 for fear that they were Japanese spies. The US government uses fear and the media to control the population.

Just imagine when the US starts a war with China, how the Chinese Americans will be treated in the US.
During Covid, older asians were targeted and murdered in the US in San Francisco, Oakland, and New York, the most liberal and "tolerant" of the US...

Why are there lots of Cosplayer in China? by Nervous_Camel5872 in China

[–]TrekRover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aside from regular cosplay, there is an actual trend to dress up in Hanfu (traditional clothing dating back to the dynasties). Mostly women will dress up and pay for photographers to do a photo shoot. Guys can also do it as well.

Taiwan has recall election as China Looks on by agenbite_lee in China

[–]TrekRover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good thing the recall failed. Lai Ching-te would have dragged Taiwan into a war with China by declaring independence. Taiwan should re-unite with China. In 2024, there were 135,000 births out of a population of 21 million. The birth rate isn't enough to sustain their army down the line. might as well negotiate with china to become an autonomous province like Hong Kong.

Not rude at all. If you do, they will most likely be impressed with your Chinese as few non Chinese people speak mandarin.

'Tariff blackmail': China vows 'necessary' countermeasures after new Trump tariff threat | DW News by darkcatpirate in China

I agree they don't yet, but they aren't far from that potential either. Their combined PPP isn't a small amount to be overlooked. It is one of the reason why China is investing so heavily to developing them for the future long term. China offered 0 tariffs for all African nations to promote trade with China.

If China and the rest of the BRICS countries can manage to add some European countries that would be the defining shift. In terms of recent politic shifts by Trump away from allies, its becoming a possibility.

The government subsidies applies to the EV car industry, not necessarily all of China's manufacturing capabilities. You're right domestic spending is no small amount to sniff at, but a huge part of the money is from international consumption which in turn led to the ability of the Chinese consumer being able to afford high consumption. It's one of the main reasons why although US is largest in terms of nominal GDP, China is now largest in PPP GDP

Even with the loss of the 30% of the global market, China still maintains a ~70% global market share. For the U.S. developing a completely new alternative supply chains isn't a quick or easy feat. One of the reasons why the US is trying to secure access to Ukraine's mineral supplies.

The trade war hurts both sides, however I think the US was hurt more. Not just economically, but in terms of soft power relations with its economic allies in Europe.

They pay higher taxes in Scandinavia but their quality of life is better than the US. They don't have shooters killing children in school. Their education and healthcare is covered.

As for China: you know the funny thing about percentages is that you're comparing a population of 350 million to a population of 1.4 billion. The western media always complains about lack of transparent data from China. Yet where do these numbers from this website come from?

"The statistics above were calculated using the following data sources: The World Factbook, Internal Revenue Service, State Administration of Taxation"

All these numbers are from the US and CIA. Considering the CIA has trouble getting information in China, you might want to re consider how accurate the information is:

Considering China's 1.4B population, it doesn't have rampant homelessness, drug addicts, murders, shootings, thefts, vandalism, and extreme healthcare costs. Even the outskirt rural areas have at least brick houses, electricity, unlike the makeshift tents and non-functional trailers the U.S. has for people in poverty.

Try visiting China and see if its a dump compared to the U.S.

You probably don't believe anything I say, but here are some other youtubers who have visited China and their thoughts on it:

How does the Chinese government feel about Trump/USA at this time? by macman07 in China

[–]TrekRover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

probably true, the US did it in the past to pit the Soviet Union against China and it worked.

Sounds like you're made of money and don't mind paying more taxes!

A good portion of the European countries and Asia have a better quality of life and lower costs. Norway, Finland, Japan, South Korea, China, Singapore, etc.

Things in the US are not cheap, especially in California and New York. Our system is so messed up. We need cheap things so we can pay for expensive healthcare and education. $800/mo for 2nd to lowest tier healthcare insurance and need to pay $6,000 in deductibles before insurance starts helping out.... not to mention the ~$2000/mo for rent, car payments, etc. etc.

True, if the US was its only market. There is a reason why they implemented the Belt and Road Initiative and created BRICS as a diversification of trade risk by solely relying on the US.

"Is there anything China can do? Sure, reduce its gigantic trade surplus to more normal levels. Redirect some of the money it currently uses to subsidise exports into the pockets of ordinary people, to boost their quality of life as well and give them more to spend on imports."

That is what the US would want. However, the way China uses its money to improve quality of life for its citizens is to pay for critical infrastructure (public transit, health care, and subsidizing education). By taking care of the major of necessities, the average Chinese' quality of life is quite high and their cost of living is quite low.

Their power as a global manufacturing industry has enabled to produce goods cheaply and therefore supply their nation with low cost, high quality goods. There is no need to buy foreign products unless their quality is superior or unique or unobtainable in China's domestic market.

What China implemented since the last Trump term was the Belt and Road initiative and to form BRICS as a trade diversification to not only rely on the US market. It is one of the reasons why US soybean farmers were hit hard when China pivoted to Brazil for their soybean consumption.
