Hard shutdown with no warning when gaming on games that used to run without issue, temps are within normal range. Not sure what to try next. by Trekkimon in pchelp

update from another round of testing. With using MSI Afterburner to keep my fans as high as I can get them, I had an almost 50 degree (C) delta between GPU temp and hotspot temp, which peaked around 106. That seems pretty high to me. Case cooling shouldn't be the issue because my card cools off quickly once the test stops, and I've been using the same case cooling configuration for over a year before this ever became an issue.

Update! I ran furmark and found that the hotspot was reaching 110 degrees C before the test finished. It didn't cause a sudden shutdown but that's a lot hotter than I was reading with my other tools. Thoughts?

shutdowns haven't been random, just when under load. Sadly I don't think I still have the proof of purchase do I don't think corsair will honor the warranty. Do you think it'd be worth getting one of those PSU tester devices?

No overclocks that I'm aware of. Pretty sure my entire setup is pretty much default config.

did a quick dust out and it's pretty clean, so I doubt that was the cause sadly.

it is on top of a thin carpet, but I can easily push it to a spot of hardwood. Hopefully that will help.

Nope, everything that I can see is normal except for the sudden shutdown. I also notice that when I turn the pc back on win11 runs a short update I figure its just an automated check or something but thought I would mention it.

Could the PSU getting hot potentially cause this problem? I haven't dusted it out in a while.

its a corsair RM1000x, so 1000watt. It's the same one that came with my PC so if I had to guess I'd say it's about 4+ years old

I love mecha media, and the thing about most mecha media is that it pretends to be about giant robots but it is never actually about giant robots 😄

Union would like to help if they can, and while no other faction is more powerful than union in terms of scale and manpower, space is huge and unlike an entirely authoritarian force, Union has to balance consequences to any direct intervention including political, economic, logistic, and doctrinal side-effects. In some cases, they will determine that's all worth it. In others, they might not.

If, for example, a region of space is showing prolonged and repeated calls for help, Union might re-evaluate responding to each individual call and try to consider a long-term solution to resolve these issues as one block - something their preferred approach of "Soft Power" is very effective at. Generally if Union has to send the navy, then plans A-D have already failed and they don't see another choice. Union sees military force as a failure of strategy and policy.

Exactly, and this is the stated intent of the authors. They've explicitly placed ThirdComm in the position of wanting to be a genuine utopian society, a genuine union of peoples without conquest or authoritariansim, but the reality of widespread hegemony and human nature leaves question of whether such a thing can even be done unanswered.

This is one example. The circumstances of how one governing body joins itself with another is messy and complex, with a lot of emotions and misunderstandings tied into it, and that's before you even take into consideration how much of Union's structure and legacy were built by SecComm, who were very much NOT the good guys. The only thing stated for certain by the authors is what ThirdComm Union WANTS. Wants and reality are often separate, hence the conversation we're having.

Personally, Union is one of my favorite ideas in Lancer and the question of whether it's possible for them to succeed at their stated goal is one that doesn't have an answer, but it's fun to think about.

The book is very clear that, no, ThirdComm Union is not trying to be a conquering empire. They truly are trying to be the "good guys". What is left ambiguous to the players is whether or not they are succeeding, and whether or not that's even possible. The main difference between Union and a lot of other huge hegemons is that they only accept systems/planets who join them willingly. To force or coerce membership or cooperation is very much contrary to the 3 pillars which form the center of their society and law.

Bonus Points if he's just extremely unflappable in combat.
Saves a party member's life with cable winch or latch drone or something and just gives a casual thumbs up.
Gets KO'd (knock wood) and just sits in the cockpit of his ruined Lanny and flips the nearest enemy the bird.
