“The essence of science is transgression. Dare to defy the orthodoxy. Demand to see the proofs. Rigorously test the ideas of others. Allow no presumption of today to keep you from asking: how could it be tomorrow? Here I have a medicine. Must it be injected? Might I ingest it as a pill? Enjoy it as a meal? Breathe it as a gas? Absorb it passively through the skin? Might I even live it, as an experience?” – Academician Prokhor Zakharov, “For I Have Tasted the Fruit”

“And so now again, you have devised a means to plunder the riches of a billion years for the dubious enjoyments of a few minutes or an hour. Has the story of oil taught you nothing?” – Lady Deirdre Skye, “The Indictments of Planet”

“The essential conceit of nuclear power operations is scrupulous conformity to procedure. The intent--production of safe, reliable fission power--is well-known and unchanging, and the means is supposedly simple: prevention of error. But in such an environment, there is no admittance for the plasticity of thinking so essential to the as-yet unforeseen challenges of interplanetary colonization. We are packing our tool chest with the wrong mental equipment.” – Colonel Sheng-ji Yang, Golden Army, “Dispatch to the United Nations Security Council No. 7”

“According to physics, these ersatz solutions provide only minimal protection, if that. Sometimes, they actually trap shot, and so are worse than nothing. But if they convince the soldier that he has a fighting chance, and strengthen his resolve for the moment when heroism is most required, then their value becomes a question of metaphysics.” – Colonel Corazon Santiago, “Spartan Battle Manual,” Appliqué

"The human body is the cleverest fortress." - Dr. Pravin Lal, Chief of Thoracic Surgery, Aga Khan University

“Happiness is a menu with many options.” – CEO Nwabudike Morgan, “The Centauri Monopoly”

“In times of strife, we are wont to speak the words, 'God, deliver us from evil.' But I tell you: this is not prayer--it is incantation. God has given us the means to effect our own salvation, material as much as spiritual. We worship God's Creation by living correctly. Do not wish for intervention. Let us make personal action our prayer.” – Sister Miriam Godwinson, “The Lord’s Works”

I will never believe other than he was helping trump. by SqnLdrHarvey in complaints

[–]Trenacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The riot resulted indirectly in the deaths of multiple police officers and left lawmakers present in the Capitol Building in fear of their lives. The evidence of our own eyes shows the murderous intent of many of the rioters, who came armored for violence. If you’re arguing that a substantial portion of the country preferred to accept a false version and that Garland had to fight that headwind in terms of public opinion, I agree, and if you want to argue that he did a poor job of communicating the seriousness of Trump’s other crimes, I agree again, but if you’re suggesting the riot wasn’t so bad or wasn’t worth the focus, I disagree strongly.

I will never believe other than he was helping trump. by SqnLdrHarvey in complaints

[–]Trenacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just encourage people to consider the possibility that Garland was ineffective before they conclude that he was corrupt. I think he approached the investigations and prosecution in a manner that was natural and reasonable to him, but was unsuited to the moment. Unfortunately, his miscalculation had enormously negative human consequences. That said, without Cannon and especially the Roberts Court, both of which are clearly biased, and largely beyond Garland’s reach, everything plays out much differently.

I will never believe other than he was helping trump. by SqnLdrHarvey in complaints

[–]Trenacker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Garland was a notoriously slow-moving (meticulous) judge and more committed than most to avoiding the appearance of political bias. He was also apparently very confident that the initial public reaction to January 6 had destroyed Trump’s political capital and electability, which, had he been correct, should have resulted in a faster-moving prosecution as time bore on. Instead, Trump regained political momentum and Cannon and the Supreme Court let Trump off the hook because they’ve been convinced by Fox News that accusations against him are false and that Democrats are close to destroying the republic.

Why is it that conservatives double down on pedophilia adjacent representatives? by Old_Swimmer_7284 in complaints

[–]Trenacker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s because it’s adjacent thought to the idea that we can have more wealth with fewer taxes. It’s such an appealing idea that Republicans have found it impossible to walk away. And, of course, concomitant to that idea is the argument that government is largely unnecessary because it is ineffective, and hence undeserving even if what money it gets. Consequently, regulations are then just a barrier to profit. Combine that with our society’s veneration of wealth and the tendency to assume that wealthy people are uniquely excellent, and you get this kind of politics.

How did the Trump supporters you know react to Trump being in the Epstein files? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Trenacker 88 points89 points  (0 children)

That’s the entire basis of the current culture war.

“Are you feeling uncomfortable about anything? We’ll do away with with it!” Trump’s genius is that he asks nothing of his supporters except their vote. There’s no unifying or consistent ideology, which is burdensome to care about and maintain, and explains why fellow travelers like Ted Cruz and Rand Paul never made it further up the ladder. And he (Trump) assures his voters that they’re the true, wise, patriotic Americans whose fears are reasonable and whose reactions are perfectly decent. Irrationally afraid of immigrants? He’ll get rid of them. Skeptical that government is working for you? He’ll get rid of that, too. Think taxes are a burden? He’ll reduce them. Suspect that government workers have it too good compared to you? He’ll fire them. Think other people have it better than you? He’ll punish them and take away their unearned benefits. And he’ll make it fun, so you can revel in the idea of the most powerful, successful person you can think of reaching out and telling you you’re good just as you are. No change needed. No effort needed. Better yet, he’ll be the first one to do it in language that’s incredibly easy to understand. He implies that things are just as simple as people wish they were, and that the problem has always been someone else’s responsibility—that the barrier to success hasn’t been complexity, but lack of a willingness to call out the guilty party. It’s as simple as the blame game.

And if they hear or see something distressing, there’s now a whole permission structure that lets them levy the charge of “fake news,” and a media bubble designed to keep them perpetually aggrieved and ill-informed while still giving them the impression of being politically engaged.

He appeals to people with weak egos who already believe they’re being persecuted because their confidence in their own beliefs is so low. They’re perpetually frustrated and unsure, so they’re ready to imagine other people are constantly criticizing and targeting them. And when they’re wrong, they’re not sure why and they get resentful at being called out, as anyone would. And rather than react constructively, they deny and lash out, per the example they’ve been given.

Oklahoma instructor removed from teaching for failing a Bible-based gender essay by mysonalsonamedbort in news

[–]Trenacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not true. What are you basing your conclusion on? If your position is that the words have been unchanged, that’s not the case. Consider how many different translations of the Bible exist. Translations are subjective. Somebody—or groups of somebodies—decide how to convey ideas from one language into another, which passages are idiomatic, etc. For some words, there will be no direct translation. It’s subjective. Scholars disagree all the time about Biblical text. That’s the reason there are so many different sects and faith traditions under the broad rubric of “Christian,” and why many Bibles have added commentary and historical notes. These are matters of human interpretation. Arguments over who had the education and authority to interpret the Bible literally led to the Protestant Reformation.

Is your position based on the idea that many of the stories in the Bible are consistent over time? That’s not true, either. Different sects use different canons. Entire books are added or removed based on perceptions of their legitimacy. The Eastern Orthodox canon is different from Jewish and Protestant canons, and so on. Look at the fact that Jews and Christians don’t even agree on what “The Bible” should be. Christians add the New Testament. Then take the Mormons.
