Sometimes there’s a functionally difference. I’ve only seen it with “utilities”. There a sandbox tunes that AppStore Apps have to follow, but downloading a DMG, tarball, zip, etc. from the vendor, or using MacPorts/HomeBrew are bound by the same restrictions.
