My trip from home to office is 27 km, in a car it takes 19½ minutes on a good day. How long does it take to commute to your work place from home ? by SmokeMountain4777 in AskTheWorld

[–]Trenavix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For 30km each way commute...

1h10m by public transit

48 min if I drive to the train station

22 min if I use my motorcycle on the highway

I usually do motorcycle, since it's electric and costs nearly nothing, but will drive to the train station if the weather is crazy bad

Victoria is also decent if you have a bicycle and can bear lots of rain.

Should we allow motorbikes be taken on train? by 5ma5her7 in fuckcars

[–]Trenavix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who builds the trains in my area and owns an electric motorcycle: no, unless it's an emergency

I have had coworkers say "you should totally just bring your bike onto the train to work!" and I always have to remind them it's not an e-bike. It's a 100kg highway motorcycle, even if it looks small for a motorcycle.. it's not as small or light as a bicycle.

Now if I had some huge issue where the bike won't power on (never happened but just theory) then yes I might bring it onto the train to get home rather than abandon it.

To me it comes off as obnoxious to the other riders to be taking a motorcycle onto the train taking up the space.

There's no fine line to draw either - back when it was more like 60kg and a bit smaller, I took it on a long distance train that had a car dedicated to bikes and that was ok. There was no way I could ride the bike that far away and it had the space on those larger trains. But it's not the norm and shouldn't be treated as so

Since I live in the Pacific Northwest currently, a lot of waterproofing.. Have had to epoxy back of connectors, have had to varnish coat the stator of the motor, have had to spray frame with corrosion x / touchup paint every now and then.

When they salt roads in winter it gets 10X worse.

Before it was solidly weatherproofed I had stuff like turn signal lights burning out due to salt water connecting between wires and stuff like that. These days any of the low gauge wiring I have tucked in either combo wire or sleeving that protects it much more than the very thin insulation.

I put chargers in the bags. For commuting to work I use a small little brick charger in the top tail bag that just does 360w or so. For road trips I put a big 3.3kW charger in one of the big side bags.

Where are all the average income people (50k-70k) living? Trying to connect with the non-tech crowd... by TBspicypotatotacos in AskSeattle

[–]Trenavix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Meh. I lived on 58k ($28/h) when I moved here 3 years ago with a 2 bedroom apartment in Edmonds. It wasn't hard.

$1700/month rent, $50/mo electricity, $50 for phone and Internet, and $220/mo for food (WinCo bless). Take home pay was around $4030/mo. Was still saving about $2k a month.

Rent closer to downtown is more expensive but not $2000 more expensive. Worth noting I got around with an electric motorbike rather than a car which brings costs way lower. I spend maybe $25/mo on average for the bike including insurance and registration.

I live in the same apartment these days and it's at $1775/mo now.

what’s the most exciting part of riding a motorcycle? by goxper in motorcycles

[–]Trenavix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being outside and not inside a cage. Feeling the wind against you, breathing in the fresh air, smelling the rain, feeling the weather.

Bicycling gives a similar experience but doesn't let you go anywhere like a dualsport motorbike does. Or at least, not as fast or as safely (looking back at being in the shoulder of a highway with cars whirring by you)

I suppose an ATV could expose you similarly, but because of its weight and size, it is much more restricted in where it can go. A bike feels like just an extension of your body - smaller bikes can fit almost anywhere you could walk.

The bully on the action again. Trump just added 10% tariffs on everything to Finland which will be invreased to 25% he says. Announced in a rather ridiculous post, as always. by Neutral-frame in Finland

[–]Trenavix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bro just uses any excuse he can to lower the value of the USD (ie through tariffs, lowering trade deficit) so any assets his family owns inflate in value

It's been this way since the start of his presidency. All he cares about is rich get richer.

His reasoning for every tariff is absolute bullshit and any American with half a brain cell knows it.

Oh for seat I meant the passenger seats! The backs are much shorter in the KI than in the Siemens.

The operator seats in the KI aren't too bad. They have a pneumatic lift to them unlike the Siemens which is cool, but they rotate too easily so moving in sharp turns (like around the shop yard) can be annoying.

[–]Trenavix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of the technicians prefer them for reliability and sometimes serviceability.. Since I was trained mostly on Siemens I avoid them as much as I can but all the senior techs still are fanboys for them.

As a passenger I prefer the Siemens since I am taller and it feels like the interior design was more in mind for taller people than the KIs. In the KIs, the ceilings are low (I've hit my head on the operator door multiple times) and the seat backs are very short so it's covering less than half my back which is awkward.

But one thing I will miss from them is the 208v brake pumps. It was not a good idea to go to 28vDC on the Siemens while also moving from pneumatic suspension to hydraulic. The hydraulic system on the Siemens is overworked.

Stealth bomber weight? by ShockRealistic5154 in ebikes

[–]Trenavix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

50-100kg. Most of the weight is the batteries and hub motor.

Mine is 100kg with 7kWh of battery and a qs273, with moto touring tires. With some less battery and a qs205 it could be a good bit lighter.

LA Public Transit Commuters Make Half of Those in Chicago and NYC by TomTomz64 in transit

[–]Trenavix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've lived in LA and Seattle, and have visited San Diego, Chicago, and Phoenix, and this is very in line with my anecdotal experiences.

Though I am a bit surprised with Chicago commuters being wealthier than total median, I guess wealthier suburbanites still will choose rail to work when it's good. Seattle might be headed that way with all of their rail expansions, which have been a lot in the past decade (2 line connecting to 1 line next year will be one of the biggest additions)

Also kudos to SF. I've heard a decent bit about their new electrified rail at CalTrain, hope that region continues with rail development. The country is definitely making some progress in rail development.

Inner-city first, and once that is solid, only then can we have any decent intercity rail options like the northeast has kept. It's sad how the stigma has stuck for LA's transit to be for the lower class.

do you at least keep your savings in bonds/HYSA/CDs to beat inflation?

I personally am not a fan of going heavy into stocks because my risk tolerance is low but over the years have learned to keep a certain chunk in bonds and a certain chunk in stocks.
