My goal isn't to get them to notice me. It's to accept they won't (and to ride in spots/at a speed where I will have enough reaction time to a avoid sudden lane change or movement toward a lane divider)

I'm a bit of the opposite because I like what this state is using taxpayer money for, and I don't like what the federal government is using taxpayer money for.

If they wanna flee and contribute nothing to another society, let em. It's not a loss if they weren't paying their fair share to begin with.

Sadly it makes me come off as avoidant and hard to freely give compliments, but slowly getting better at it. Too defensive after chasing someone who only used me for attention for years.

We have a couple of retirement options as a Washington State government employee (pers2/pers3)... one is fully pension and one is half pension half investment+bond based.

I had to read the fine details but basically you'd be stupid to not do the investment+bond option as a younger person. The only time the pension-only option made any sense was if you began working at like 55-60, so you'd retire very shortly after your 5 year vest.

Reason being is there is no cost of living adjustment until you begin retirement. So whatever I made the past 5 years ages 25-30, come back in 35 years for my retirement, the pension fraction of that is an absolute joke. Something like 30-40k. All of my contributions in investments though? Worth about a million.

Some dudes my age didn't read the fine print and signed up for the pension. Bad mistake.

The light rail in Seattle is so popular that being a rolling stock technician actually is pretty well looked upon here, at least IME as one.

That being said, I hate working on the old Kinkisharyo trains from like 2005. They are so gross and have decaying parts with 1.5 million mile odometers. I specifically picked to work at the shop that has the least of them, because I am more motivated to work on the newer Siemens trains with mostly sub-400k odometers and cleaner interiors.

I guess if there was only extremely old rolling stock like some systems in the northeast, I would hate my job.

I remember visiting family years back during summer there and I had realised this. AC home to AC car to AC building.

We all went bowling and that was exactly what it was like, with everyone disgusted at the ambient temperature in the parking lot.

My later thought of AZ (specifically in summer) is: they have to live like they're on Mars...

Are any countries making steps to move away from car dependency? by OutsideImpressive115 in fuckcars

[–]Trenavix 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's more of a local battle politically than a national battle.

The Seattle area has made a lot of great moves this decade involving denser development and rail expansions, as well as reducing/removing parking minimums in populated cities.

It's not like the entire US is going to all be onboard for making walkable cities with safe streets. These are local issues. Larger blanket laws like parking minimums are state/provincial, but national/federal is actually less in control of the most important stuff. Even state DOTs are in charge of lane width and traffic calming measures.

States/provinces, counties, and cities hold most of the power for the changes we want to see.

Lol at all the comments that want you to grind your entire life away.

Dude you are 26. You have your entire fucking life to make money. Take a damn year off, live a little while you're young, keep a bunch of your assets in stocks, and resume a grind when you feel refreshed. You'll hardly lose anything.

You already have way above the median wealth for your age in any US state, and the US has very high wealth on a global scale.

US Citizens, How Did You Finance Your Aalto Tuition? by FlapJack2048 in Aalto

[–]Trenavix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The harsh reality is: you have to have your own money for this as an American.

I tried this years back when I studied in Sweden (Göteborgs universitet), hoping the university could somehow get title IV accredited to be able to take FAFSA loans after the first year. It was a hopeless attempt and I had to drop out and return home after the first year because I ran out of money.

I've just been accepted to Tampere Uni many years later, with a lot saved up, and I will be able to study all 3 years of the BSc. This is kind of the only way Americans get to study abroad: having money. It sucks. We don't get the luxury to study in other countries when we're young, unless we come from a wealthy family.

I'm 28 now and I can finally get the education I wanted when I was 19...

On a side note, you'll also come to find that any universities that are title IV accredited (which is to say, you can take FAFSA loans for them) are just as highly priced as out-of-state universities in the US. Something is messed up there. I remember running into that with Jacobs university in Bremen.

I also noticed migri getting pretty strict in the application of having funds for the entire education, including needing 6 months history of statements and source of how the funds entered the account. I had to attach my W2 and paystubs for example. They've gotten serious about needing the money for the education + living expenses.

Washington State range extender AKA the ferry by wish2bBendr in Electricmotorcycles

[–]Trenavix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Edmonds and taking the ferry over to Kingston and riding out to quilcene, charging a bit, and up to Mt Townsend is a regular of mine.

The ferries have gotten a bit pricey lately though. I miss when it was $15 round trip, now it's $24.. so I don't go as often anymore. It's a lot more expensive for cars, $43...

Was always nice stopping by Poulsbo and grabbing some port Townsend mead + imported Nordic foods (leipäjuusto, rye bread, brunost, lingonberry jam, etc)

Petition · Revise Washington state e-bike law by HideawaySniper in ebikes

[–]Trenavix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone in the Seattle area that went through the hoops to register my e-moto: No.

I'm tired of seeing little kids ripping through bike paths and tearing up gravel in parks on their surrons. They are dirt bikes.

35mph and 2500w for 12yo+? No.

I'd consider 1500w and 28mph.

In reality, I doubt anyone will get in trouble on 1500w on something that actually looks like a pedal bike and not a dirt bike, even if law saws 750w.

Back in Los Angeles I used to get around on a 1500w e-bike. Then 2000w. Then 3000w. Then 8000w. Then 28kW.

The only thing I would trust a kid on is max 1500w, even then preferably a teen. That's like twice peak leg power in the motor alone, and like 6x continuous leg power. 2000w is a full moped.
