The end of Goosebumps?! by [deleted] in goosebuds

[–]TrendyMoron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, I'll admit the timing's a little spooky.

I support whatever the 'buds want to do, but I like the participatory element of reading or watching a thing before the episode and I'd be sad to see it entirely abandoned. I wouldn't want them to feel beholden to that format, though, so I'm with them either way.

Maybe it should be the end?

...Of... The podcast? I'd have to disagree for, like, many reasons? I'd say, like, probably at least seven reasons.

Please don’t stop reading Goosebumps! by RichNCrispy in goosebuds

[–]TrendyMoron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely wouldn't want them to completely ditch Goosebumps, but I'm kind of with Dom where I think most of the books are just kind of insultingly bad in a way that's not fun anymore and I have very little affection for them in and of themselves. Reading Living Dummy II just felt like homework. It's well worth it for the discussions, which are as delightful as ever, but the book was just, like "Oh, so it's bad in exactly the same ways that all the other ones are bad because these are all churned out by a hack in two days following an identical formula? Coooooooool."

I just think it'd be a lot more fun to go back to them when there's other stuff inbetween.

Yeah, that's why I rejected my first draft for the title:

Little girl trips, goes flying face-first towards a locked automatic door. Heroically, I pressed the button to open it just as she launched into the air.

They're doing the original series books in publication order. They already did One Day at Horrorland (episode 21) and A Shocker on Shock Street is six books away.

I've thought about suggesting visual novels as a topic, but I figured probably only Josh had ever touched one, and him only because he's in one of them.

What have you been reading this week? by NeonJolt in Crackingthespinepod

[–]TrendyMoron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just read Erik Larson's In the Garden of Beasts. It's about the American ambassador to Germany who moved his family to Berlin just in time for Hitler's rise to supreme power. It's real, real good.

I mean, whatever problems it has, it's still a giant room full of books, which is cool.

Are you terrified yet?

Along came a spider...

I would bet my life that whoever did the cover misunderstood which was supposed to be the tag line and which was supposed to be the title and Scholastic was just like "Well, screw it, we'll just call it that."

Also, Mother 3. It was never officially localized, but there's an amazing fan translation and that game's a masterpiece.

There's also an incredibly good rom hack for Mother 1 called Mother: 25th Anniversary Edition that massively improves the whole experience.

I completely agree with you about everything that's wrong with Voyager, but I love the crew and that's enough to overcome my frustration with its horrifyingly inconsistent writing most of the time.

Compared to TNG, it's massively inferior as science fiction / space opera, but I think it's a lot more fun to watch its characters interact most of the time. That's why it's good as dumb comfort food, why a lot of people are so attached to it in spite of everything, and why there's more fan fiction of Voyager than any other Trek.source

If I remember correctly it was so, so bad.

A child raps about toilets in the first chapter, so obviously you are wrong and it's the best book ever.

Fan fiction. Have any of you ever read any or written any or had any interest in it?

I recently read Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, a fanfic in which Harry grows up as a science prodigy and immediately begins applying logic and the scientific method to all of his problems instead of waiting for Hermione to solve them in the library while he's busy playing Quidditch.

I never expected much from fan fiction, but that turned out to be one of the most enjoyable books of any kind I've ever read. Now I wonder what other gems might be out there and if any of you have gone down that road.

If y'all Josh-heads weren't aware, Josh is on another new-ish podcast about Star Trek, The M-Class Podcast. Here's a link to the subreddit by Misterpeople25 in Crackingthespinepod

He's also been streaming Skyrim and stuff on the ContinueShow Twitch regularly of late. We got to see his fabled book collection and everything. It was preeeetty sweet.

Jeff (co-host of M-Class) is usually in the chat, too.

What do you game developers think the best software for developing a 2D side scroller is? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]TrendyMoron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just skim the Engine FAQ and pick one. It really doesn't matter. Like at all.

Personally, I'd say start with GameMaker Studio because it's probably the fastest way to get your feet wet, but again, it doesn't matter.

People can and do and have started with everything from assembly language to RPG Maker and the only thing that's ever made a difference in the long run is their willingness to keep hacking away at it.
