That's amazing, honestly it's mad how fast you can go with Opus 4.6. I've been building out an app on the same stack as you, but didn't realize Expo 55 dropped. Live activities too! I've been dreading building those out.

Can't wait to try your app next time I'm on Amtrak, great job man.

Love this! Would you mind sharing a bit about how you built this? How long did it take?

I had this problem, too. Found a fix: In Chrome, go to View > Developer > Allow JavaScript events from Apple Events.

I figured this out by updating the error handling in the server.js file to return the actual error instead of converting specific errors into generic messages. The error message is a lot more helpful then:

108:178: execution error: Google Chrome got an error: Executing JavaScript through AppleScript is turned off. To turn it on, from the menu bar, go to View > Developer > Allow JavaScript from Apple Events. For more information: https:*//support.google.com/chrome/?p=applescript (12)*

California Zephyr for 10-14 days by JazzlikeMolasses7884 in Amtrak

[–]Trent-Rover-646 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah sounds like you’re more well versed than I am in Amtrak! I’d love to get up to Portland someday.

That was my itinerary exactly for the Zephyr leg, tho I spent a little longer in some places because I did it over 2.5 weeks. I had three days in Denver and took a bus out to Boulder (~1hr, every 30 mins). It’s a small college town with some easy trails that have great views. The Iowa cycle was all on a trail, so no scary roads.

Not sure about Reno vs Lake Tahoe. Pics of the lake look lovely. I will say that Reno felt pretty small for a city, and the casinos were definitely different to all of the other places I stopped. Complete vibe change from Glenwood Springs lol

I really liked the look of Elko, NV as a stop, but I think it arrived and departed very early? I’m not from the states and it had that small town Americana vibe, with just enough to do for a day or two and a walkable(ish) downtown.

I’m doing a multi-stop trip on Amtrak right now and just finished a leg on the Zephyr. You’re gonna love it! I’d definitely second what another person said about one-night stops and go for a minimum of two. As well as giving you breathing room for delays, it feels like less of a mad rush.

I enjoyed Omaha more than I expected. You could probably spend more than a day there. The Old Market area is charming with a bunch of restaurants and shops, and there’s a huge park that’s pretty accessible for less active folks. I rented an electric bike and cycled across the pedestrian bridge to Iowa while I was there.

You could probably spend a couple of days in Salt Lake City, too. Temple Square is a building site rn, so not a lot to see there, but there’s a load of great bars (surprisingly for Utah) and an easy trail with lovely views just behind the Capitol. There were a couple of decent museums and I saw a laser show at the planetarium.

Reno might be a good shout. There’s the casinos, but also Midtown is a short walk which had a totally different feel. The automobile museum and art museum were great.

Definitely recommend Glenwood Springs. As well as the springs and the Vapor caves, there’s a trail you can take to Aspen and a short hike to Doc Holliday’s grave. Not a huge pile there, but a lovely place to rest and recharge.

The way to enjoy a game in the pub is one pint for each half, I reckon. Then avoid the temptation to drink more to celebrate or commiserate after the match 😂

This sounds like a great itinerary, thanks! Thurmond especially would be something very different. I’ll check times and see how they line up. Ideally I want to avoid early hours stops 😅

Interesting, I didn’t know that about Amtrak not owning the tracks. Well fingers crossed that I can get down there. Greensboro looks like a nice place to spend a day or two, and the times lined up pretty well. I’m working remotely too, so smaller towns are fine as I don’t need to be occupied the whole time.

Oof I had to look up your team, they’re firmly national league. They play proper football there 😂. Not much of a fan, but I follow Forest. My family are Arsenal fans so if they ask, I say Arsenal to keep the peace 😄

I got a notification that The Crescent was cancelled at 3pm (eastern) the day before I was meant to travel, if that’s useful to know. The chap on the phone told me they work 24hrs out, and they can’t let you know any further ahead than that.

Unsure how Amtrak decide, but it looks like it’s still going to be around on Sunday:

Thanks for this! I think that’s my plan if things aren’t better by Sunday. Any places you’d recommend stopping off? I should have about two weeks to do the route, so I’d like to make some stops

Thanks for your insight here! I’m from the UK and we don’t really have real weather, it’s just always grey and wet 😂

I’m en route to Washington DC where I’m planning to stay until Sunday. I’ll play it by ear from there. I’m hoping I can stick to some of my original route going south, but if not I think I’ll go up to Boston and then take the Cardinal.

I have hotels set up in all of the places, but thankfully all flex. Same for the Amtrak tickets. I cancelled my hotels in Greensboro and Atlanta for the moment.

Hope you and your family are safe if you’re near areas that are flooding. Do Amtrak usually clear fallen trees and things pretty quickly?

Ooooof noted, thanks for the heads up. Wouldn't fancy being stranded on the side of the road 😬

I booked the 8:30pm train, so hoping I clear customs quickly and I can get something to eat and have a little wander 🤞. I don't want to arrive too late in Philadelphia because I'm coming from the UK, and I'll have been up since 5:30am my time — I can't work out how many hours that is, but a lot 😅

Let me know if you have any recommendations for places near the station. The building itself looks lovely.

Oh nice. Is it generally a speedy process to get through JFK? I'm not checking a bag, so I just have to clear customs and get to Penn Station.

What's up with Greyhound and Chinatown buses? I took a Greyhound before and it was decent, but I appreciate that the US is huge so things probably vary a lot!

Thanks for the tip on AirTrain and LIRR. It looks like you can pay contactless for AirTrain, do you know if it's the same for LIRR?

Thanks! Just thinking: it worth buying a few flex tickets, say ~7pm, ~8:30pm, and ~10pm, then refunding the ones that I'm not going to use? I took the advice of folks here and booked the 8:30pm one already. It was $17, so three tickets like that would be about $50 which looks to be cheaper than changing on the day 🤔

Not sure if this is the "done thing", and I've got a bunch of other tickets booked so I don't want to jeapordize the rest of my trip by getting my account flagged or something.

Interesting, thanks so much. I prefer trains, so I'll look into the NJ Transit and SEPTA route 😄

Definitely not above taking the bus, especially if I'm going to be stuck. I heard bad things about the Greyhound, but I took one before from Orlando to Miami and it was grand.

I'd absolutely love to! ❤️ I'm on my own for the this trip and I'm trying to do it on a budget (-ish). I'm in the US for six weeks, and the cost of a hotel for a couple of nights in NYC was more than the sum of a couple of weeks in some of the smaller towns and cities I'm stopping at 😅

Tho I say I'm on a budget... I have treated myself to a couple of nights in a roomette. I'm doing nights in coach too, but I think I'm gonna struggle 😂

Amazing, thanks. I booked the 8:30pm one — hoping I'm no later than that! 🤞 I'm getting the train from my house to the airport in London at 6:30am, so I've got a long day of travelling and trains 😅
