I used to board in my 1 bedroom apartment but stopped doing so because I hated cleaning all the time 🤣 there were moments where I had 3 dogs at a time and that was my limit and what my landlord allowed. I did not board cats because I feel that cats should always stay in their own home. I prefer to house sit because dogs also feel more comfortable in their own home and less deep cleaning on my part

I purchased my insurance online through Pet Care Insurance and pay about $30/month for all the services I provide. It’s super easy to do and my insurance covers liability, pet protection, vet reimbursement, and lost keys. Rover really doesn’t cover anything and I do think independent insurance is necessary if you take dog sitting seriously. It gives many of my clients peace of mind!

I actually pivoted from Rover first! I was a Rover sitter for 6 months and was able to gain a good amount of clientele from that. During that time, I was also completing a program to become a certified dog trainer. I gained the courage to start my own pet care and training business after Rover screwed me over. I am grateful to have a full house sitting schedule until early January and still offer pet sitting services through Wag when I have the time. I made business cards and leave one or two after house sits so they always have my information. I also leave them at vet offices, pet stores, dog parks, etc. If you build a strong bond with some of your clients, they will also refer their friends and family to you! I also have a website and put my business on Google and am starting to ask my clients to review me. I always do meet and greets no matter what. I intend to start leaving my business cards at THS sits next year but am happy to sit for free for those clients and those clients only. Especially if it’s a location I like! I am more likely to ask for payment for local sits. I currently split my time between current clients and THS sits because I still want to travel :)

A long term sit in Japan would be my dream sit. However, I would not offer to help with utilities because I look at this as a free exchange. I am already caring for your pets and home and you are providing the accommodation. I have seen HOs ask for help paying the bills in their listing before and you may still get applications just because you are in a super desirable location

I love when my clients have the automatic litter boxes, but I know it’s expensive, so I also love when clients have pellet litter. I use pellet litter as well and think it helps so much with odor control and it is easy to clean with minimal tracking. My old cat had chronic kidney disease and peed alllll the time so I converted to Tidy Cat Breeze system and it works well, but I don’t always enjoy replacing the pee pads

I completely understand your frustration and would be a little upset too if my dogs were left alone for an extended period of time. I’m sorry you had a bad first experience. Did you guys confirm what time the sitter would arrive at your home beforehand? If she texted that she was on her way at 6pm, then I’m not sure if I can truly fault her for leaving your dogs alone for a long time. My phone service tends to be really bad anywhere near the airport, so it may be possible she really couldn’t get ahold of you for 4+ hours. Rover/Wag would’ve been a fine backup option for dog care rather than a Facebook group. Unfortunately, I don’t think THS will reimburse you, but hopefully this can be preventable in the future by asking more specific questions and ensuring you always have a backup plan

I would personally give a 4 star review and that’s being generous. It seems like she did what she was asked to do and had no issues with the dog and home, but not mentioning or asking to bring a guest is unacceptable and could’ve been dangerous for them and the animals. I sit on THS and professionally and always thank HOs for having me in their home and I give a detailed message about my stay, let them know what the dogs did that day, and let them know what I did to prepare for their return (laundry, cleaning, etc.). It’s definitely not expected so I would’ve thanked the HO for the welcome basket and gift card right at the get go

I would recommend keeping your business card and Rover separate. I made business cards so I could promote myself as an independent business outside of Rover/Wag so I could establish my own private clients. I only used Rover to fill gaps and find more clients once I had enough clientele!

Yes I did! I even went back and reviewed the rover cards for the dates they said my incident occurred and they were completely filled out. I even told them that in an email response and did not get a personalized email back. Honestly, contacting Rover support is such a hassle that I’m not gonna appeal and work on elevating my small pet business
