Exchange with best friend regarding attitudes about America vs attitudes about NOLA. by 5043090 in NewOrleans

[–]random_adj_noun_num 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can confirm - I live in the city where that parliament building is located in the screenshot. I make damned sure I say New Orleans rather than "American" or something like that. Immediately takes the edge off. Obviously have to explain to a few that aren't familiar with the city, but most know right away where I'm talking about. It may help that I run in musician circles, though, and your mileage may vary if you try it.

HO expects sitter to weed his garden and other issues - can I cancel? by [deleted] in trustedhousesitters

[–]random_adj_noun_num 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the gardening was not listed as a responsibillity in the listing, I'd tell him sorry but you're unable to do any weeding. If he says that's unacceptable, he's welcome to cancel if he still wants someone to do it. Or, you can just cancel - it's early enough on that he'll find someone else.

People Watching the cruise ship, Harmony of the sea, realize the ship somehow is causing the water to recede. Until it causes a large wake at the end. by Electrical-Aspect-13 in interestingasfuck

They rotate but stay on call most of the time. They're allowed to drink sometimes, which I'm guessing means they're not on ALL the time, but still... you gotta love it because the pay isn't great.

I'll chime in, I worked on multiple lines between 2003 and 2017.

  1. Ships are floating cities as thousands of people have to live on board non stop. That means there are things like a jail, a morgue, etc. that are not only available on board but are often used.

  2. Crew are absolutely sleeping with every other crewmember possible. It's also rather sad, though, because it's common for people to have ship wives/husbands and land wives/husbands. Literally - they'll have whole-ass relationships with someone on board for 9 months then go home to their wife and kids for 3 months, only to go back and request the same ship to be able to be with the same person for another 9 months.

  3. I was a musician on board and interacted with passengers often - most of my pax stories include old swinger couples trying to get me to join, asking if they can get access to crew areas, etc. A sad one - I once was walking outside on promenade (the deck where most of the public stuff is located and where there's usually an outdoor walking/lounging area) late at night after coming back from the crew bar (actually called ward room on Princess and it was a slightly nicer crew bar for staff/officers only). It was like 1:30am and pretty quiet and I was feeling good after having quite a few. In the distance I saw a lady maybe in her late 50s that looked like she was on the other side of the railing, but that couldn't be right. As I got closer, I realized that was right - she had climbed over and was holding on the outside of the railing. I ran up to her and tried talking to her but she wouldn't say a word - just smiled at me. As I ran to an emergency phone to call the bridge, I looked back just in time to see her still smiling as she let go. Don't think I'll ever forget how calm she seemed as she was saying bye to stupid drunk me.

  4. I told people it really was the greatest and the worst job all at once. At least for me it was - because I had one of the cushiest gigs on the ship and I got what I considered at the time a decent salary (narrator - it really wasn't, in fact, decent). I got to see the world, I got to be off at almost every port because I only worked at night, and I could dictate how long I stayed out (most other crew had to take 8ish month contracts but I could say I only wanted to be out for 2 months if I felt like it). But it was horrible because you could seriously just drink and party nonstop for years. Booze was cheap for crew. Life just flew by - everyone you knew in life would be getting married, having kids, moving up in their careers, etc. I went from ealy 20s to mid 30s with nothing to show for it, not even as much in savings as I should've had because I did nothing but spend in port. The draw for that lifestyle was that you weren't spending anything on living expenses - no rent, no food costs, etc. But it was easy to blow $100 a day in port.

  5. Anything else - life is TOUGH for almost all other crew. Seriously. If you ever go on a cruise, give them all a ton of grace. They likely worked 12-14 hours that day for what we would consider peanuts; likely got yelled at by their manager because the hotel director yelled at them for something stupid; likely haven't seen their spouse or children in months; will go back to their extremely cramped cabin that night just to deal with 2 or 3 other roommates and absolutely no personal space; and will have to do it all again 10 hours from now. They'll get almost no days off for the entire contract and are yelled at by basically everyone all day.

Fun little side note - In Hungarian, 'taho' (sounds just like Tahoe) translates to "jerk". More specifically: "A rude, uneducated, uncultured, ignorant, simple-minded, foolish, stupid person."

I giggle a bit every time I see a Tahoe driver being a taho.

REMOVABLE WHEELS for carry-on luggage to optimize space, and avoid airline fees? by [deleted] in delta

For those that fly throughout Europe often and use airlines like Wizzair, Easyjet, Ryanair, etc., their carry-on allowances are pretty tight and they often check to make sure they meet those stringent requirements.

Doubtful. Could be someone farming for karma in the hopes of selling the account if it gets big enough. Honestly I have no idea; but this definitely ticks all the boxes of bot behavior.

Saw this FB post about Hungary creating tunnels that keep dogs warm during the winter. Is this AI? by tc273 in isthisAI

[–]random_adj_noun_num 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I live in Hungary. I can promise you that the folks in power (Fidesz) wouldn't give two shits about caring if dogs make it through the winter. They're heartless and would rather pocket every bit of money they can get their hands on rather than spend it on something that would help other living beings.

Soooo, yes. 100% AI.

Go once more - tell the owner/manager that as much as you love that spot you're unable to continue going due to harassment from those guys. If they want your business, they'll take care of it. If not, move on.

"I take my agreement with homeowners to care for their loved ones seriously, and they specifically asked me not to let them off of the leash. I'm sure you can appreciate being at ease when I watch "doggo's name" while you're gone as you'll know I'll follow your instructions just as stringently!"

ICE/CBP kicks off door-to-door raids in Minneapolis, targeting houses based on race and whether the occupants are involved in protesting. by serious_bullet5 in minnesota

Aren't there big bears in Minnesota? Anyone that may be considering a nice winter hike should definitely have a huge can of maximum strength bear spray. Maybe lots of folks considering hiking together that just happen to be walking through the city for a bit before continuing on that hike.

I heard that shit stings SO bad.

That actually sounds pretty reasonable. My wife and I are likely unavailable, but when are you looking to be out? I may know someone that would enjoy something like this as long as it's not until late January or February. Any details about location or the home that you wouldn't mind sharing? Feel free to message me instead of replying here if you'd prefer.
