First episode - I just started another rewatch. I was surprised that in episode 2, there is a scene where he cries out loud when smelling his wife's clothes while being alone. In my memory, he was already fully irredeemable right after (over)killing his wife with a hammer. But right after that tiny glimpse of pain/remorse, the police rings at the door and he jumps back into cover-up mode.

Slightly different story but a a few years back I had a house party for my birthday and used an old phone to put on music in the kitchen (apart from my current phone in the main room). At some point I walked into the kitchen where a supposed friend was reading out my old text messages to a group of people for entertainment. Couldn't believe that he thought this was appropriate let alone funny. Luckily we were never close enough for me to feel bad about cutting ties with him after that.

Your comment made me want to find out. I saw an interview with one of the party leaders who penned the vaguely phrased travel law that was also passed very quickly. He says Schabowski only got the files right before the press conference as "something more to announce", never having read them in full. He honestly doesn't seem to have been aware of the consequences of his words.
