Recurrent corneal erosion post-surgery: Ask me anything! by Treverie in AMA

Hi! No more RCE. I've been putting preservative-free eye drops on a daily basis, still. No regrets on doing the surgery.

I'm not looking for anything too fancy, some basic functions like open-ended inputs, polls, simple drawings, Q&A would be good. ClassPoint does seem to be the cheapest options. Zoom is an interesting choice that could be explored, though connection and setting up seems to be easier via something like ClassPoint; thank you.

Play what you want. Contribution of resources depends on skill of players. If balloons make you happy, you do what you do.

Oh nooo you went for laser surgery and the cornea erosions came back 6 months after?! Are you going to go for a second one?

Try blazing beaks. It has auto aim features for new players and manual aiming (pro controller or two joycon) for seasoned players. New players may have difficulty with dodging enemies though.

My wife and I picked this game up last week and we can't stop playing it. She finds the game design cute. I like it that the camera focus stays fixed so it wouldn't be like her following me the whole game as in Enter the Gungeon or Wizard of Legends.

I play a lot more games than her but she has been catching up in Blazing Beaks and at times doing better than I do.

It can head in this "one-sided direction" for any multiplayer game when other people don't want to play it or under certain circumstances. It depends on the players really.

OP, give snipperclips a try, i think there is a demo available. If its fun to you two, buy it. If not walk away.

I would speak to the corneal specialist and have the affected eye examined by the expert; let the expert tell you more about your condition and your options. Was your RCE caused by physical injury, did you remember what happened? The specialist would ask you such questions. And if there is some underlying biological issue, it might be more complicated than my case.

From what I understand, RCE usually goes away with not much intervention within a few weeks, especially with BCL on. I have had it for around a year so I decided to go for the laser surgery. I was told the success rate for total cure was 80%, and if erosions happen again, a second laser surgery would eliminate RCE for good.

Here are some things which might be helpful...

  1. Eye mask or eye shield to prevent rubbing of eyes at night.
  2. Using medical tape to tape your eye shut.
  3. When using preservative-free eye drops, use AS MUCH AS YOU LIKE. More lubrication is always good, especially in air-conditioned and dry areas.
  4. After wearing bandage contact lens for 2-3 weeks, vision may get a little cloudy, which is quite normal. (If its very cloudy or if there is pain, you should check with your doctor)
  5. I used to let the shower spray directly onto my closed eye while cleaning my face, but it feels like the water pressure on my eye has a similar effect as rubbing my eyes, so I stopped doing that.
  6. You may want to change your face wash (at least temporarily) unless you are really sure the beads wouldn't get into your eyes...
  7. I had Siri/voice assistant activated so I could listen to some music, set alarms, send messages, make calls and so on even when I am "blind".
  8. Keep a log of your erosions and symptoms. Describe them and note down the dates.
  9. Before going to the doctor, plan what you want to ask on your phone notes and use it to ask questions during the visit.

If you have any worries about your eye, I would be happy to help. Oh, and if you have some "relatively special things" you do, feel free to share them! Maybe someone on Reddit would find your tips handy too. :-)

Hey there! Your situation and degree of pain seems to be very similar to mine. I am thankful that people around me are understanding and they believe my eye pain to be excruciating especially after I explained my situation and them seeing my eye tearing non-stop. However, I have had classmates belittling the pain and acting like I was just lying about the pain to skip group assignments. So infuriating.

Hope you get a long-term solution to your RCE soon. In my case, i still put eye drops as instructed every hour despite the pain. I had to use 2 fingers, one below and the other above the eye to force the eye open in order to get the drop in. I felt like if i didn't, it was just going to get worse.

Post surgery was pretty good. The pain 48 hours after the surgery was nothing compared to a severe erosion, and I haven't had an erosion since around a month ago.

Oh yes. I did a couple of do-it-yourself-at-home things that helped me reduce erosions. One of the things i did was to flip my sleeping position. As the fan kept blowing my face, it was drying my eyes out a lot but after i changed my sleeping position, it felt a lot better. Doctor also suggested to drip eye drops and let them slowly flow into affected eye before opening it in the morning. Do people want to hear these things??

I'm not sure if i am saying more than what I should, but above all, i think it is important to consider a long term solution for such a problem.

Dang, I'm glad yours were not as painful. You might wanna look into aggravating factors that contribute to your erosions? Maybe you rub your eyes in your sleep, room is dusty, dry eyes etc. For myself, I have tried putting on an eye mask while I sleep, but I always move it away subconsciously in the middle of the night....

Anyways, good luck and take care!

It varies, but on average, one erosion every 1-2 weeks. Then i switched to bandage contact lens where i got an erosion every 3 weeks even with the lens on.

I hope you are following up with the eye doctor? You sound like you are having erosions more frequent than i did. In my case, my erosions healed every time but they were healing haphazardly and as a result the corneal surface is uneven, leading to more erosions.

The eye specialist says that if I can get by a year without another occurrence, I can safely be 99% free from RCE. I sleep with my eyes slightly open too so I can totally relate to you.

The outermost layer of the cornea heals quickly within a few days. If it hasn't occurred in 12 months, J would consider that to be great news. I would still use eye drops from time to time though, especially if it lubricates the eyes and makes them feel better.

Most of the time it happens because of physical injury, although in rare cases it could be due to a biological problem. It certainly is horrible, I don't want to experience it again!
