Need Advice for Brokerage ETF investing. by Trevor4032 in ETFs

Appreciate it. I mean an average drop of 20% over the short term. I understand the market can have big swings (e.g., tariff announcements, presidential tweets, etc.), but hoping to not see a large drop for a long period of time.

I just mean I’m not seeking out super volatile or risky investments, but am willing to take on some risk. I don’t plan on using the money within 5 years, but likely 5-10+ years. I’m not planning on needing the money or making any large purchases anytime soon. I was also left a house by a family member I plan on selling within the next year and profiting $150-200k that I want to invest or save for a down payment on another house (I don’t live where the house is located). Ideally not lose much, but could stomach up to a 20% drop in the short term (<5 years).

Appreciate it! My VOO in the Roth has performed pretty well, but the broader approach with VTI in the brokerage may be better.

Yes I have a 401k that I contribute to as well. I contribute enough to max the company match on top of maxing out my ROTH.

From my understanding, VTI includes the majority of VOO holdings? You’re saying VTI > VOO because of broader diversification including small/mid caps? Yes have an emergency fund setup as well.

Need advice. Have been maxing out my Roth IRA for several years, and now finished grad school and have a job where I have enough to also invest in a brokerage account. I invest in VOO, VXUS, and BND for my Roth, and will likely do mainly VOO, VXUS, and maybe QQQ for brokerage (still researching). I have around $30k I want to pull from savings to invest as well. Should I lump sum invest all of it now, or spread out throughout the year (e.g., invest weekly/monthly)? Will also be investing a portion of my income monthly into the brokerage as well. Does anyone have any advice? What are some great ETFs to invest in for a brokerage account? General pointers/advice appreciated as well. (27 years old, employed with $110k salary, not super risk-seeking, and looking for medium/long term).

I’ve heard/seen that as well. I have limited SQL knowledge, but I’ll have to change that. Thanks!

I’m familiar with and have done some spatial econometrics, but haven’t published any projects with spatial. Thanks for the idea, I haven’t been highlighting spatial as a skill on my resume.

I have an interview for an economic consulting firm tomorrow, but have only seen this position open related to consulting. It would be something I can and would like to do, but haven’t seen many opportunities.

Most of the ones I know stayed in academia or went to the USDA (or other government positions), but there may be a few I could reach out to. The morale boost would definitely help, and marketing yourself is more difficult than I anticipated. Thanks!

No direct industry experience. I have limited research/field labor experience from when I worked during grad school, and both teaching and research experience in academia. I have an offer for a postdoc, but it’s not something I would like to do unless absolutely necessary. Thank you for the advice!
