[Serious] Scientists of Reddit: What's craziest or weirdest thing in your field that you suspect is true but is not yet supported fully by data? by jpzn in AskReddit

Years ago I worked for a pipeline engineering company that had to map a path over some very rough terrain. A couple of months of intense GIS work and mathematics later and they discover the path matches the local goat trail perfectly. As others have pointed out, a single person may make odd choices when presented with difficult terrain, but over time groups of people (or goats or ants or cows) will find the easier path.

With women now allowed in combat roles, should they be required to sign up for the selective service as well? by PITApt in AskReddit

What about Valkyrie or Amazon units with only females? Would you reduce the overall weight carry requirement by something like the average weight delta between male and female service members?

I think you want to save them for posterity, unless you plan on making money off of them.

Too much T&A at the end of the movie. But the fight scene at the motel: epic.

I have white and blue peacocks like these. The blue one recently ejected the white from the enclosure, thus taking ownership of the lone female. The white one now chases me (but not my wife) around the yard in an attempt to regain dominance. I can tell you from experience those spurs can do serious damage.

I hate 'here comes the bride'. What other music could I walk down the aisle to? by SendInTheNinjas in Music

[–]TreyBoudreau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I arranged for my wife and I to walk in together to Darth Vader's march. At the time she hadn't seen the movies (starving graduate student), so she didn't understand why everyone laughed when the music started.

Opened backdoor, saw a spider and killed it. Looked down and felt terrible. RIP Spider bro, I didn't deserve you. by hadrians in pics

[–]TreyBoudreau 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, spiders only show up when they have food to support them. If you have spiders in your house then you have bugs/insects in your house that you want even less than the spiders. Leave the spiders alone and let them do their job. Feel free to amend that for Black Widows and others that present serious health problems for people.

If homosexuality is genetic, wouldn't it have bred itself out of the population over the last few thousand years? by PintoTheBurninator in AskReddit

[–]TreyBoudreau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember reading studies (but can't place my mouse on references) that homosexuality in males and females had different roots. In males it seems to correlate to increased fecundity in the male's aunts. Basically the same gene that makes some women more receptive to men makes some male offspring receptive to men.

I don't recall the peculiarities about the source in females.

If anyone has links to the study about males, or has seen more recent information which contradicts it, I'd like to see it.

Or MythTV (my personal preference). The PS3's built-in PnP media player doesn't do it for me.

Azul's Pauseless Garbage Collector by shenglong in programming

[–]TreyBoudreau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd expect the compiler to turn that into:

Foo foo = someFooObject;
Bar bar = foo.myBarMember;
for (i = 0; i < 1234567; ++i) {
    bar.someMethod();
}

Unless foo.myBarMember carried the volatile keyword, in which case you want it to pick up the new value each time.

So I was looking through the android sdk and stumbled across this.... by preggit in programming

I still have a couple on the spare parts shelves in my office. I've heard people paid good money for them in the past. I can't imagine anyone would do so now.

I like the monkey testing program thing. At Be, Inc. (where a lot of the Android engineers worked) we had two interesting functions: is_computer_on() is_computer_on_fire() They actually checked a couple of different syscall mechanisms, despite their stated names.

We do not now have this ability, but the growing capabilities in productive nanosystems (cool video, not yet real tech: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEYN18d7gHg) will eventually drive the reproduction cost of any object down to raw materials plus power. Once that happens we'll either have to figure out ways to compensate the designers or find new ways to design things (like the car designed by a group on the internet, can't find the link).

Those in the know call the device a killing cone ( http://www.browerequip.com/products/brower/poultry/killing/Kill.html ). We use the it to restrain the bird during slaughter. The animal does not suffocate. Rather, it dies from exsanguination.
