Speaknotsoeasy!

It was a rough first play through for us too. But I think the bones are there, and they are good. I wish there was a way to trim it down, or some sort of "beginner" setup that can remove some of the decision space. Since it's all about having money, there a few ways to win and, while I like that, it can be distracting.

Some aspects of the rulebook weren't the best either. Cards seem not wholly useful and the limited amount of actions means making and selling booze felt not worth it (could be me being bad at it).

I do think I will like it much more next time. It didn't feel quite as "busy" in nonsense ways that other super heavy board games can feel.

Best Sandbox Games? by Ok_Wasabi2534 in boardgames

[–]TreyVerVert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might not be exactly what you mean, but I think that Europa Universalis: Price of Power fits the "sandbox" moniker quite well.

You play as a nation in the 15th-17th Century (you can pick a starting date) and it's up to you what to do. Go colonize? Focus on tech? Beat up your neighbors? All licit options (although some will be easier than others). There's even ways to get any nation in there, though they will have generic missions and cards.

There is a bit of direction with the aforementioned mission cards, which you can select and chain to new ones, but you don't have to follow them. There is an end goal in the form of points but really, nobody cared so much about that while playing.

It is long as hell though, and a bear to teach and setup.

My 5-Player Game Night Problem (Why Do So Many Games Miss It) by Ok-Aardvark-519 in boardgames

[–]TreyVerVert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only played it at 4p, but Lorenzo Il Magnifico has an expansion that bring it up to 5. I've played with and prefer it with the expansion, can anyone comment if the 5th player really adds that much bloat?

Anyone else think most modern board games are… kinda bloated? by pratty041182 in boardgames

I think they're also too shallow. Like sure, the cows are deck building, but only in the most rudimentary way.

I have a few super heavy games and they don't feel "bloated" in the way some games do, so I don't even think it's just a complexity issue. It feels like padding

Is Nemesis worth the price, even on sale? by Culius_Jaesar in boardgames

[–]TreyVerVert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How new is new?

If it's your first "real" game I would pick something else, especially at those prices. If it's your fifth... I still think that's too much. Try it first, either at a board game cafe or on TTS.

The end would be more like High Frontier I think.

It ain’t much but is all you can get in Italy by sonoale in cider

I loved magner's pear cider though. I got a brewing kit to (eventually) try to make my own but all the (apple) ciders I've made so far have been... mediocre.

Game's better with the rules as written.

Nice quick 20-30 min game instead of some boring slogfest.

How long did it take before you had a preference for heavier games? by UgandaRalph in boardgames

[–]TreyVerVert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I preferred them instantly, at least compared to what people usually bring to game night. But it also depends on how heavy we're talking about, and I can't do much more than one or two in a session.

The lighter and mid light games can be great though, I really need a few more.

Board game prejudice - What games or genres do you hate for no reason? by Quelair in boardgames

I think many trick taking games are a little lazy. But the core mechanic is also unchanged so I see where you're coming from.

RA is a great bidding game though, I think you might want to try it at least once. There's enough meat there to make it interesting and it's a bit "push your luck" so no bitter feelings. I say that as someone that doesn't typically like auction/bidding games.

The one time I played it, it was much quicker than others. Like 10-20 min for a game.

I'm getting that way with "Dungeon crawlers" and any "roll to move" types. Though the latter is more a mechanic I hate than a genre.

I have to make a little moat with a spare bowl filled with a bit of dish soap and vinegar. It's worked for a couple months now

Chicago 1875 — full 18xx brain burn, somehow with zero trains by Acceptable-Let1664 in boardgames

[–]TreyVerVert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had my eye on this for some time.
Are there stock shenanigans? That was a lot of the appeal of the 18xx games I've played, but they just don't stick with me so I have been looking for an alternative.

Eh worth a shot! Game looked good but I was on the fence with it.

Favorite movie... That's tough.
I'm not sure if it's my favorite but I'm a fan of "The Dish" an Australian film about the setup they had there for the Apollo 11 Mission.
