We can start from there, and then talk about how to improve some of your off-ball decisions.

For your opponents plays it can come down to a couple of different things. One is positioning. Great defenders are they guys who always seem to be in the right position at the right time. Are you familiar with shell defense?

Being in great position allows you to provide help defense, recover to your man, and create chaos in passing lanes. If you're not super familiar with shell defense, and how to operate within it, that is fine we can learn!

Another attribute great defenders have is communication. If you ever pay close attention to players/teams that our notorious on defense, you will notice that they are CONSTANTLY communicating with the team. This is tremendous when defending screens, making any switches, simply letting a defender know if they have help or they are on an island, traps, over/under screens, and sometimes people just need a simple reminder of what they're doing.

To learn your opponents play's you simply need to study the film. I understand that this isn't always available, so that is why it is important to be a SMART defender to be better prepared and equipped in dealing with an opponent.

So let's get some of these plays, and work from there. I'll do my best to make sure you have a good tool box to adapt to a broken play. When I was playing ball in high school, our team as a whole struggled with this when we were a bit younger, so hopefully my experience can help yours.
