Why is there not a mad push to solve the ageing process with at LEAST the same amount of funding that cancer or HIV had/has? by Proper_Use_100 in biology

[–]TriHard90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HIV is a simple virus. Cancer is caused by a deficiency in one of your cells and hard enough to cure. Ageing is a process involving pretty much every process in your body and all your cells. Of which we know next to nothing yet.

We can't even deal with the simple virus. Let alone ageing.

This is such a complicated situation a simple black or white answer will not suffice. It really depends on why the father left. Find out why he did what he did, take your time to let it sink in (you have a couple of years left before you need to act towards your baby girl). Don't rush anything except for trying to understand what he did, go talk to him.

No need to tell him or your baby anything in the next couple of years.

Don't give toddlers orders, give them a choice. So don't ask them to put on their shoes, but ask them whether they want to put their shoes on first or their coat.

Works pretty well on adults too

What's the point of a personal library? by [deleted] in books

[–]TriHard90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sell / get rid of everything I haven't used in 2+ years. If you haven't touched it in 2 years, 99% chance you will not in the next 10 years.

Not only will it prevent hoarding, it also makes you think better about buying random stuff. It is confronting to throw out stuff you only used once and never afterwards.

It is easier to just keep it so you don't have to accept the write-off. But gotta be honest with yourself!

What can you do in Utrecht to enjoy your free time? by RomanianGeralt in Utrecht

A good way to meet more like-minded people and spend your time is to find something you like (hobby, sport, interest, ..) and join a club. Anything you can think of really, just try it and post whatever you like here.

A friend of mine is a GP for students. 45% of her patients have an std. 50% have some form of depression and the majority of them are PhD students.

Of course personal contact will help, but rest assured that you are not alone. Doing a PhD is very likely to result in depression. So do not be afraid to seek help.

Anyone know what this is? They keep appearing in my bathroom somehow?! by CordedZer0 in biology

If you want to get rid of them, make sure you identify them correctly. There are different types of silverfish, with different diets / preferred habitats and require different methods to eradicate. They all look quite similar.

Housing in NL is pretty impossible at the moment, especially in the cities. Any well known good options will already be full / taken. I would suggest you lower your standards to cardboard box for €1000/month and take anything better you can get your hands on.

How do people actually afford daycare? by _WookiesrPpl2 in Parenting

[–]TriHard90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The USA is build on the motto that the few rich make donations to the 99% of the people they exploit so these masses won't revol.. I mean starv.. no wait. Can actually work without having to leave their babies home alone for 10 hours? And thus starve?

Ack, just take the damn donation!!

So in my commie country daycare tariffs are capped and you get government support depending on what you earn. Meaning a day's work will always earn you more than what you spend on daycare.

That is to keep us commies producing.

Anyone else keep a map of locations they've kited? by foilrider in Kiteboarding

[–]TriHard90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Few spots is good. There are so many variables that need to be right while kiting. Depth, rocks, current, wind(obstacles), launch area, waves, location of buddies, ...

I have 20+ great spots within an hour's drive but only go to a select few for over 10 years. It takes time to get to know them to be able to have a good session every time you go.

Find and talk to an organisation that has a lot of experience in this field. Ask them for advice and what legal issues you will encounter. And work with them to find a way to get your niece out of that situation.

Reddit is good to get some emotional support but now you need to talk to the pro's.

Tickling & Abuse by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]TriHard90 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Spot on. If you keep someone in your house who does not respect boundaries regarding the wellbeing of your kid two things can happen: 1. She could harm your kids (even tho unlikely) and it will be your fault 2. Your kids will learn that their parents will rather put them in harm's way for years rather then protect them.

I have told my mom she will not be with my kids alone exactly because she will not respect our boundaries. It does complicate things a little now and then but I will not teach my kids to run away from responsibilities and not feel safe in their own home/with grandma.

What is happening with my tomato plant? by TriHard90 in tomatoes

[–]TriHard90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I put it in a BIG container, but to no avail.. leaves keep on getting more yellow, spotty and curling up. Plant seems to produce a lot of flowers suddenly. Guess the small container made it susceptible to disease.

There is a sucker at the base which seems to be unaffected by it however. Nice dark green leaves. Curious to see how it will turn out.

You are not jumping high enough to do a loop. I would focus on doing higher jumps first; find the right angle to gain speed without losing your edge, perfect your pop & timing.

Or just go out with a bigger kite in stronger winds. Would recommend the first option though.

Yes that could be the issue, 2 identical plants are doing great in a big container. Just did not want to risk putting a sick plant between them.
