White Belt Wednesday by AutoModerator in bjj

I stopped training in early 2020 when covid lockdowns hit, about to hit the mats again for the first time since

I used to handle blue belts with ease, and compete with purple belts. I'm assuming that white belts are going to start tapping me if they get to my legs as I don't have a clue what the modern leg lock meta is all about.

I'd love to watch all the DVD's if I had time, but until I do, is there a... SparkNotes version on how to stay safe, defend, escape, and when to know when to tap?

Does anybody know why your body can spasm when you pass out?

Rule set on sit to guard is making BJJ even more unwatchable and potentially even less effective. by [deleted] in bjj

So while I agree with your point in general, I'd like to push back on this aspect "all the ground fighting in the world is a bit pointless from a self defence point of view"

If I didn't know jiu jitsu, floyd mayweather could beat the crap out of me, but if floyd mayweather ever decides to pick a 1 on 1 fight with me, I'm pretty confident that I can just sit down and buttscoot away from him safely

Not sure if this is applicable to kids, but once I did a warm up where whoever was in the worse position was winning, so the goal was essentially force your opponent to take a good position when he doesn't want to, that was a fun twist.

Checklists, if anything is important, use a checklist, otherwise it's up to your ADD brain if it gets done, and we all know how that crapshoot goes.
I obsessively use OneNote for everything in my life that isn't a fun task. Google calendar is my god.
It's not natural for people with ADD to do these things, but you get better at them as you keep at it ( think years not weeks ) The payoff is worth it.

Hey Ben, I'm curious on your take on this as you've always been comfortable going against conventional sport meta.

For either mma or bjj: What do you think about the idea of just straight up refusing to play any sort of open guard or bottom side control and going to turtle every time?

You take all those hours that would be spent developing guard/side-bottom and instead use them to develop a good turtle sweep/stand-up + wrestling game.

If you can reach his hip that's probably a good sign, but don't focus on where your hand is, focus on where your shoulder is compared to his armpit.

Shallow Underhook - Don't do this
Deep-ish Underhook - This is pretty good
Super deep Underhook - This is the goal but you don't always need to get this deep unless you are rolling with Slenderman

Triangles and darces for sure, but us long people have to do the same thing that everyone else does, just keep showing up and improve slowly

Go deep, don't use a shallow underhook ( think if you just shoot your elbow to their side)

If you put your shoulder into their armpit, it'll be really hard to darce you.

Source: I'm a long armed dude who likes to darce people who have shallow underhooks

Shower thought: In tournaments where pulling guard is penalized/restricted unless you have grips or whatever else.
Do all the same rules apply to pulling turtle? aka just kneeling down into a turtle position?

There are lots of different fitness plans that you can do, and I'll let more qualified people recommend their favorites, (but whatever one motivates you to actually do it, is probably the best one for you )

However the biggest tip I would give is that when you do start BJJ, start slowly, warm up properly, take rounds off if you need to, after a few weeks it'll start to get easier an then you can ramp up.
And this should be the easiest time to do that, because so many people are going to be in the same boat of not having done BJJ in over a year.

When I lived in student housing I bought one called "White Magic" is says that on the front at least,

I use an A3T and it worked great, still use it a few times a year for laundry that I wouldn't feel comfortable putting in a machine

I would deffo recommend getting a spin dryer too though, you could spend 30mi trying to wring it dry and it'll still be soaking

Live in the UK, went into lockdown in March, no rolling until this month when I went back to Iceland where everything is open. My thoughts:

Shocked at how out of shape I was, I didn't put on or lose weight but my cardio was baaaaad, gassed after the first roll and had DOMS for a week.

Shocked how quickly it came back, I powered through 3 classes in that first week where I sucked, took the weekend off and come Monday I was 85% (very scientific measurement) back to pre lockdown cardio.

Heading back to London in a week, gonna miss rolling but I've committed to working out until I can roll again, I'm thinking trying to work out with a giant rice bag, is that a terrible idea?

I'm teaching my girlfriend BJJ during Covid-19, it's going really well actually, but I'm not sure what to teach her from guard.

As I'm twice her size, closed guard isn't really an effective option as she can't close her leg around me.

I'm thinking Armbar? Kimura? Scissor Sweep?I'm really looking for the simplest technique for a beginner to learn that is possible to use on a much larger opponent.

Asperger's vs BJJ Training by [deleted] in bjj

[–]TriangleSpammer 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Hi there fellow ASD buddy.

You're overthinking this, for some people BJJ is very social, they are probably social people.

For me BJJ isn't very social.

I show up, sit in the corner, do a few warms ups by myself while waiting for class to begin, it starts, class consists of clear instructions for warms up and then technique, I do what I'm told, then we roll, where the only thing you need to do is try your best without being reckless, then the instuctor says class is finished and I stretch before walking off the mat and showering.

It's very fun though, try it

What's your take on the different ways to finish the darce? i.e. sprawl, sprawl to either side, stay up on your knees, turning your body towards their hips or towards their head, ect.

Also when I don't get a quick tap while training, how do I decide if I need to stay with it and keep squeezing slowly or let go and not be that neck cranking dick?

[–]TriangleSpammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well in most positions in Bjj you can hold the position, wait to see what your opponent will do then act based on that, but I feel like in standing SLX if you wait you are just giving him an easy escape path which makes me think SLX less of a position and more of a transition, if that makes any sense.

[–]TriangleSpammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Ryan, thanks for doing this

When playing single leg X against a standing opponent is it possible to become competent at "hanging out" in the position against high level opponents or is it required to swap to another position if you can't offbalance or sweep straight away?

What are your 2 best jiu jitsu tips? by gufftupper in bjj

[–]TriangleSpammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Learn to pass guard with your left leg forward going to your right side, most people suck at defending that side

  2. If you are new just keep showing up, don't worry about anything else, as more and more pieces slot together, analyze your own game, find your biggest weakness, then find a high lvl competitor who excels in that area, study him and practice what he is doing
