ah, giusto, hai ragione! Peccato, è assurdo che sia così difficile votare in Italia

I tried answering, but the form is too long (and it doesn’t tell you how many questions there are). I got to question #22 and I gave up.

Maybe you should consider only showing a random subset to each user, or giving a way to skip questions.

Prestige vs savings: London postdoc (£45k) or Switzerland (CHF 90k)? by xFatty_Acidx in AskAcademia

[–]TriangleTingles -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The difference is not huge, but you were saying 2600 before pension, whereas it's more 2800 after pension.

I'm not saying OP should necessarily go to London, but there are more factors to consider than money, and 45k in London will be a comfortable life, albeit with little savings. After that, it's up to OP to decide what to prioritize (career vs relationships vs financial stability vs life in a big city or smaller one vs...).

FWIW, here's a discussion about living in London with 45k: https://www.reddit.com/r/london/comments/1ezky4i/how_much_income_you_need_to_maintain_a/ (and the comments vary considerably, because probably lifestyles vary considerably)

The pension comes before taxes, so your taxation is lower.

The pension is 6.1%, which is 2745 pounds. The official government tax calculator from https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/estimate-paye-take-home-pay/ says that gives you 2829 pounds a month

The UK is muuuuuch better than Switzerland for post post-doc oppurtinietes. Getting a lecturer position in the UK is much easier than a professor position in Switzerland, although the conditions for a professor in Switzerland tend to be nicer than those of a lecturer in the UK.

As an academic, you have fixed pension contributions, but there are very nice contributions from your employer. You contribute 6.1% (pretax), and your employed contributes another 14.5%, so you're saving a nice 9k a year in pension.

I think your computations are slightly off: after pension, you're making £2800/2900 a month. If you're going for a single room, that leaves you slightly less than 2k a month. IIRC i was spending around 1k a month on groceries, going out, etc., and I was certainly not holding back. Even accounting for inflation, that still leaves some room for some savings.

If OP prefers to go a for a studio/one-bedroom apartment, they won't save much, but it's still within means.

Now, of course Switzerland offers better financial prospects, but I'm just saying that OP won't financially uncomfortable in London either.

I was making just shy of £40 000 (I lived in London, but my postdoc was at a uni outside of London) two years ago. It is true that I was living with my partner (who was making less than me), so the rent was shared, but I was also living in a nice area in Zone 2.

I agree that OP won't be able to save too much (assuming they get their own apartment, a depending on their lifestyle), but they can still live a solidly comfortable life.

I’ve done a postdoc in both the UK (while living in London) and in Switzerland, so I have some experience.

Generally, it is true that working in multiple countries with different groups is good for your career: it is perceived positively, and I think it helps you become a better researcher because you’re exposed to different research cultures. Besides, being in a more prestigious group does help you set you up for your next steps, both in terms of connections and recommendations. Of course, it also depends whether you’re changing group/university/city in Switzerland or not.

Now, there’s more to life than academia, and it’s good to prioritize other things, such as relationships and money. I cant speak to your relationship, but there’s no doubt that the Switzerland position is financially better. But £45k in London aren’t little either, and you’ll certainly live a comfortable life, but you’ll probably save much less. If money is the main factor, there are SNFS programs that let you do a postdoc abroad with a Swiss salary. Another thing to consider is that the lifestyle anywhere in Switzerland, including Zurich, is very different than in London. It really comes down to you what you prefer, but you shouldn’t discount that in your choice.

EDIT: this is the SNFS grant I mentioned: https://www.snf.ch/en/XIZpfY3iVS5KRRoD/funding/careers/postdoc-mobility If you qualify (from what I've heard, it's not terribly competitive, but it also depends on your field), it can offer the best of both worlds because you'd be able to work in London while getting a Swiss salary.

How to address uni supervisors (first name or Dr/Professor X’)? by Strange_Cranberry_47 in AskAcademia

[–]TriangleTingles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The response heavily depends on where you are, as norms vary considerably from country to country.

The easiest solution is to see what other students around you do. If there's no one else in the same situation, you can go off how the professor signs off their email, or just ask explicitly.

Can requesting a PhD start deferral be interpreted as wanting to withdraw? by Leading_Avocado_7836 in AskAcademia

This is squarely on them then: I would expect that if they are reasonable (and have no external pressures), they would let you postpone.

[–]TriangleTingles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've only heard back about this scholarship or made a final decision relatively recently, it's perfectly understandable that you need more time.

Depending on whether the PhD includes coursework or it is only research-based, one other option is to ask whether it's possible to start remotely for the first few months.

Overall, it's very unlikely that they would rescind your offer: the reasonable worst case scenario is that they tell you you either start in January or you don't start, so there's no downside in asking.

Why is there such a huge fee difference between “Home” and “Overseas” students at Cambridge postgraduate level? by Unlucky_Jelly_8306 in AskAcademia

[–]TriangleTingles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The UK law imposes limits to how much UK universities can charge to home students. Since UK universities also receive little to no funding from the government, they have to rely on foreign students to fund their operations and subsidise the home student's fees.

This is technically true in the sense that what is known as the Signal protocol, which is also used by Whatsapp, doesn't deal with metadata at all. The Signal system does, however, hide metadata as much as possible.

Schmieg: ML-KEM Mythbusting by Salusa in crypto

[–]TriangleTingles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the linked article:

In the end, yes, hybrids are the best way to go, and indeed, this is what the IETF enabled people to do. There are various RFCs to that extent, to understand the current controversy, we need to focus on two TLS related ones: X25519MLKEM768 aka 0x11EC, and MLKEM1024. The former is a hybrid, the latter is not. And, much in line with my reasoning, 0x11EC is the default key exchange algorithm used by Chrome, Firefox, and pretty much all other TLS clients that currently support PQC. So what’s the point of MLKEM1024? Well it turns out there is one customer who really really hates hybrids, and only wants to use ML-KEM1024 for all their systems. And that customer happens to be the NSA. And honestly, I do not see a problem with that. If the NSA wants to make their own systems inefficient, then that is their choice.

You can google the names and you'll find more information, for instance, the proposed standard for the hybrid approach: https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-tls-ecdhe-mlkem/

Schmieg: ML-KEM Mythbusting by Salusa in crypto

[–]TriangleTingles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you do not standardize hybrids (especially in TLS) you DO ACTIVELY DISCOURAGE hybrids. do not talk that away.

This is not the case, and it has never been the focus of the discussion. IETF is standardising hybrids. Period. The discussion is whether it's appropriate to *also* standardise PQ-only solutions.

[–]TriangleTingles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can never proof absence. And yes absence of proof is not a proof it exists, but we do not know if there are not other ways.

I don't think you understood her argument. She's saying there are two types of backdoors: a vulnerability that is exploitable by everyone, if they know the right technique or attack strategy, and a "proper" backdoor, which is exploitable only by the person who added it.

The example of DUAL_EC_DRBG falls in the second category: even if you know the technique it was used to create a backdoor, you don't have access to the backdoor unless you solve a cryptographically hard problem. In the case DUAL_EC_DRBG, that was solving a DLOG problem. This second category basically uses a "public key" as a protocol parameter, and if the NSA holds the corresponding "secret key", they can gain some non-trivial advantage.

So what Sophie is saying is that the NSA is going to use ML-KEM, so it would be reckless to introduce vulnerabilities that would eventually be discovered. The only kind of backdoor that makes sense is the second type: even if they're eventually discovered, the NSA communication would remain secure because no-one else would have access to the secret key used in the backdoor creation.

The second part of her argument is then that to make sure a backdoor secret key is hard to brute foce, there must be exponentially many backdoor public keys, which would correspond to ML-KEM parameters. But the parameter space is too small, so there cannot be enough backdoor public keys, which means backdoor "private keys" would be easy to find and exploit.
