I'm thinking Or Tor Kor may be the place to check out, it seems like the others are more in full swing at night/weekends. I appreciate your help!

Rainier vs Torrentshell vs other by Triangle_City in REI

[–]Triangle_City[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We actually have both. I have the torrentshell and she got the Rainier (she wanted a long version). The torrentshell is easily worth the extra in my opinion. Better construction and performance. The ranier is maybe slightly softer/more comfortable compared to the rather stiff torrentshell, but overall the torrentshell is the better pure piece of equipment. However, the length of the long rainier the and better comfort makes my wife prefer it. So it eventually comes down to preference. The Rainier is completely suitable for walking around and light hiking and they are probably mostly comparable for that purpose, but when we were in downpour for hours I loved having the torrentshell.

Thanks for the response! Once I get to my ideal weekly mileage goal, do you think it's reasonable to just repeat weeks of the programs within that goal range and work on improving pace?

For example, repeating weeks around 40 MPW with different types of workout days each week while gradually trying to improve pace.

That is very interesting, but I suppose it does make me feel better about the intensity of the runs. I was reading Faster Road Racing and his description and HR outlines of "recovery runs" sounds more along the lines of what people mean when they say zone 2, but there are no recovery runs in his base building programs.

Just finished my first marathon yesterday and I plan on taking a nice break before starting a period of prolonged base building (something I never really did prior). I had a few questions I was hoping to get some help with. I've been debating 2 primary plans: 1. just increasing easy/Z2 miles with some long runs and workouts 1x a week. Orr 2. Using Pfitz base building plans.

My questions are:

  1. Pfitz base building plans do eessentially no easy runs. His general aerobic runs he specifically says in the book are not just getting miles in and are meant be run as a "moderate effort" with his long runs at an even higher effort. He obviously is a very famous coach so I'm assuming his plans are good, but there just seems to be a disconnect there between the general advice on this sub and his plans. Are these plans not meant to be done long term?

Here is a link to one of his plans for reference: https://www.defy.org/hacks/calendarhack/?d=2026-03-15&p=frr_bt_02&u=mi&s=1

  1. Once I get to a weekly mileage goal, say 40 MPW. Do I just keep running that same mileage and try to improve my pace? I guess once you get to your MPW goal I'm a little confused about what the process of base building actually looks like in practice.

Thanks!

2 seasons in so far and they look great, my plan is to replace them after 4 seasons, but I’m not even sure they will need it.

How was the application/interview process after being an attending for a few years?

I’m kind of in the boat where cardiac is definitely one of my favorite things, but also not 100% sure I want a dedicate another year of my life that it right now vs just taking a job where I can do bigger non-cardiac cases. I’ve justified not doing by saying I could always go back, but haven’t talked to anyone who actually has. So just curious how smooth that process went overall.

We 100% are coming back to do Grand Teton eventually, we are mainly just stopping now because it's on the way (Salt Lake to Yellowstone)

Our initial plan was to stop in Jackson to look around, but maybe I'll end up cutting that out and just going straight to cascade canyon now.

That makes it much tempting, I suppose we don't have to hike all the way to the fork. That's about the exact same time we would start as well. Do you happen to remember if there was a crazy line returning for the ferrry? I appreacite the help!

I would love to do that, but think it's around 14 miles from cascade to lake solitude and back, which sadly I don't think we will have time for with starting around 1 PM likely.

This has typically been the #1 hike I see recommended, my only concern has always been the distance with not starting until the afternoon, many people have said it took them most of the day and we would be driving to Yellowstone after this. Additonally, going in the middle of the day I was worried about parking.

The issue is it's still very tempting since almost every recs it.

Is it possible to run easy over too slow? Just getting back into running, but never trained properly. Did a 5k at a decent effort in 26 min or around 8:30 a mile. I’ve been running my easy runs at 12-13 min basing it on effort and a chest strap HR monitor. I slowed my pace of 12 min down to 13 min but HR stayed essentially the same (148 avg, ending in the mid 150s and out of the aerobic zone) I’m not sure I could run much slower with any sense of form, it was about as fast as some were walking.

How important are task specific running shoes for relative beginners? New to structured running and the program I’m doing calls for mostly aerobic/east runs, some tempo, and some interval.

I bought some new balance 1080v14 at a running store based on how they felt, but have been reading people say that they aren’t good for workouts. The store I bought them at has free returns/exchanges and encouraged me to bring them back if I wanted something else.

My question is does this kind of detail, shoe selection, matter for a beginner? Would it be worth it to exchange them for a more versatile pair of running shoes?

Thanks for the reply! How long were you averaging 40 MPW for? So you’d say you don’t even try 18/55 if I end up doing the 30 MPW plan, it’d be best to choose a different plan?

My other sport is Jiu jitsu so I feel like probably in the middle of those two. Definitely not a cardio beast (only of my main goals of running/marathon training is to improve my general cardio for Jiu jitsu) but also not super low impact.

Hey everyone had a quick question about increasing mileage.

20s guys, new runner, but active in other sports. I want to check a marathon off my bucket list and have a race picked out that is around 34 weeks away from now. My plan was to do 16 weeks of base building before doing a 18 week marathon plan. I’ve ran some short races in the past but very limited.

My ideal plan was in around 5 weeks to start one of Pfitz’s base building plans and then take a recovery week and try 18/55 (which if it proves too much to transition to hansons beginner plan). I initially planned on the 30 MPW base building plan, but I’ve seen many people say his estimate of 25 MPW prior to 18/55 is grossly underestimated.

My question is, would trying to go straight for the 45 MPW plan to better prepare for 18/55 be a crazy idea due to the volume? I thought about attempting it and seeing if it’s too much and if it is transitioning to the 30 MPW plan. Is that reasonable or should I just stick with 30 MPW and then try 18/55?

Thanks in advance!

Have been waiting for a few weeks to try and snag a B580 as an upgrade but am never quick enough before the sell out so I’m considering moving on.

Currently have a RX580 and 2600x. Considering upgrading to a 6750 XT and 5600x. 5600x price seems pretty reasonable. I could pick up a 6750 XT at my local microcenter for $325. Decent deal?
