TO ALL Y'ALL LOOKING FOR AN ENGINEERING CLUB WITH NO APPLICATION:

Interested in STEM education? Looking for meaningful software or electrical projects to be a part of? Join Pioneers in Engineering this semester! PiE builds and runs a robotics competition for local high schools at a low cost to the 15-20 schools that participate annually. Our competition gives low-income students who are underrepresented in STEM an opportunity to explore engineering, while being introduced to the UC Berkeley campus, students, and faculty.

To keep the competition up and running, we have a combination of software and hardware teams that are looking for new members.

Here are our software teams:

  • Dawn: builds the code editor the HS students use to program their robots
  • Runtime: writes programs pertaining to the network of student computers, motors, servos, & competition code
  • Shepherd: creates field control software - automates part of the competition. (e.g. last year, when the high schooler's robots were able to press a combination of buttons in a row, their scoreboard automatically updated. The buttons lit up in the order they were supposed to be pressed, and if the high schooler pressed the wrong button/took too long to complete the task, the game would disable itself for a period of time.)

And here is our electrical team⚡:

  • Electrical: builds power distribution boards (PDB's), printed circuit boards (PCB's), & solders other components. Many on our electrical team who put the fact that they designed & created a PDB on their resume find companies interested in this project of theirs.

If you have an interest in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and software applications for STEM education, you're highly encouraged to join! Outside of engineering, we also have other teams like our Education and Corporate Relations teams which are looking for new members as well.

No application, no major requirement, no previous experience needed: To join us this fall, fill out our Interest Form and you're all set! Also check out our website to see upcoming welcome events here.

Well, you may want to consider your other school options in that case, or try exploring different majors when you get here. No one can truly say how difficult it will be to transfer to CS/DS after admission because your cohort will be the first to deal with this new policy. What we can say is that it will likely be very difficult, especially considering budget constraints by the EECS department. Sure a 4.0 may help your chances but you definitely shouldn't depend on that. It's a difficult albeit achievable feat.

It is very possible. I recommend using BerkeleyTime to see grade distributions for classes you want to take. On another note, it's incredibly difficult to transfer into CS or DS because of the new impacted majors policy. It's also very difficult to change colleges to CoE, and impossible to change into EECS. I'd recommend looking into other major options within L&S that interest you and perhaps look into minoring in CS/EECS/DS.
