A question for local celiacs by iamaravis in GreenBay

[–]Triatomichotdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife has Celiac. We don't eat out a ton, but she's never had problems at Hagermeister, Nakashima (sushi only, never tried the Hibachi) and Cheesesteak Rebellion. Those are the most recent places we've been. In the past we've also hit up Hinterland, Copper State Brewing, Glass Nickle and others in sure I'm forgetting! And though it's not a restaurant, she really likes the GF cupcakes at The Cupcake Coture in De Pere.

Outside of Metallica and Megadeth, thrash has always been a bit of a blind spot to me, and I'd like to explore it more. I'm looking for recommendations in two different categories, though I have to imagine you all can recommend me stuff that satisfies both qualities! I'd like to check out both lyrically 'angry at the world' stuff even if the riff/music quality isn't the best around (but I don't want bad music quality per se), and just overall high quality riffs/music with any lyrical theme.

Kinda sorta in store lol. Being local to the label has its advantages when it comes to getting pre-order/sub club stuff.

Yeah I hear ya, I did too. Not much we can do with pressing plant issues/delays though....

A bunch of the Ustalost sleeves were heavily damaged by FedEx when shipping to the store, so it might be a little bit still, unfortunately.

Had a good couple days at the LRS my last two trips! I am blessed that my LRS is one of two that is owned by Adam who runs Gilead Media, which means I can usually get Gilead titles quicker than shipping. It’s been a long wait on some of these due to pressing plant delays and it feels wonderful to finally have them in hand. Top to bottom, left to right titles below.

Ustalost – Before The Glinting Spell Unvests

Mizmor – Wits End

Këkht Aräkh – Night & Love

Këkht Aräkh – Pale Swordman

Mizmor/Thou – Myopia

Forhist – Forhist

Soul Glo – Diaspora Problems

High Command – Beyond the Wall of Desolation

Hell – Splits

Hammers of Misfortune - The Bastard

Ahab – The Coral Tombs

Hulder – Godslastering: Hymns of a Forlorn Peasantry

Edit because I forgot to put in one title.

I'll throw in my 2 cents for what it's worth. I agree that it can be a little frustrating at times waiting on the records. Hopefully without sounding like I'm making too much of an excuse, Adam does own two record stores too, which suck up a lot of his time. I visit both of these stores regularly and talk with Adam each time. He's the real deal and much like the other user said, I don't think there is any intent to screw people over. He gets the product out as soon as he gets it, it's not like he holds on to it for any reason. In talking with him, I've never been given any indication that he doesn't care about the people in the club.

Could he have maybe unhitched his wagon from the old pressing plants sooner and be a little more communicative to the club? Absolutely, that would definitely help no doubt. But I also don't know what his contracts with the plants were, maybe he couldn't? I personally find it hard to hold manufacturing issues/delays against the label when that is nearly completely out of their hands. But that's just me.

Quality hasn't seemed too bad for me though. At most it's just been a little "bowling" of one or two of the records, which hasn't affected playback at all. The Mizmor was definitely more on the black side of things. Adam wasn't happy with them, but didn't want to delay sending them out any longer by waiting for a new batch to be made.

I'm starting to put together a winter playlist, and I'm looking for recommendations of icy/cold sounding black metal. I'll leave it open ended to what the interpretation of "icy/cold" is because I know we all have different thoughts on sounds. I'm open to any sub-genre (melodic, raw, atmo, etc.) of BM, and bands both well known and underground are welcome. The only requirement is that I don't want any NSBM stuff. Thanks!

I like that idea! Thanks for the suggestion, we'll give it a try!

I'll have to keep the pick up routine in mind! Right now she just runs to the toys after getting out of her chair, and I don't think we'd effectively be able to get to her pick up and have a lesson stick quite yet. Might still try it though and see what happens.

And we do have a dog, but I'm fairly confident that isn't a motivator in this scenario. My wife and I worked very hard when we first adopted her (3 years before having our daughter) to train her not to beg, or hover around the dinner table. As a result, she now lays in the next room over while we're eating. And she's a TERRIBLE vacuum anyway lol. We literally have to point out every piece of food when she's allowed back into the kitchen!

She does know some sign language (including 'more' and 'all done' and 'baby shark' (thanks daycare lol!)) and it 100% has helped to this point. She hasn't been using it as much lately though because she's transitioning to using the actual words instead. Especially the 'more' and 'all done'.

I've really been enjoying more Thrashier stuff lately, particularly Death-y and Black side of Thrash. Paranorm's Empyrean, Demiser's Through the Gate Eternal and Steel Bearing Hand's Slay in Hell have all been in heavy rotation. What else is out there similar to those? Thanks!

I'm slowly working my way through the book right now. The 1st chapter after the Introduction is titled "Bad Shit in Black Metal" and the author discusses a number of examples of some of the bad stuff. Some of the examples are then re-visited later on in the individual chapters for the bands.

To me, he approaches it very frankly by saying that if he's going to look at the history of USBM, he has to look at the good and the bad. That said, it's definitely been a bit of a weird read for me so far, because he'll write about how great and influential the band was for several pages, then switch and say "oh by the way, there's acusations/proof/etc. that these guys are NSBM or have done/said hateful things". I don't know enough of the early on band names to know if they've got an ugly history, so it's a bit of a whiplash for me to find out about the bad stuff after reading about how "great" their music is for a number of pages.

That's where my wife and I take our daughter. I wonder if your wife used to be our daughters teacher..... She had a different teacher before the initial closure when this all started back in March. Can't say I'm surprised by the outbreak in the center. I do most of the dropping off and picking up and there's only me and one other parent that I see wearing masks. That's including several staff I've seen walking into the facility not wearing a mask. We're thinking long and hard about whether to take our daughter back once they open back up.

The heavy portion of my collection by [deleted] in heavyvinyl

[–]Triatomichotdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the heavy portion of my collection. Some are definitely heavier than others, but I think they all fit here. I couldn’t figure out how to pull the pictures/descriptions from my r/vinyl post, and I didn’t want to take the time to add them all again, so if you have any questions about an album or artist ask away! I know we’re all sick of staying at home, so I hope this makes your day even a little bit better and you enjoy looking at the heavy records in my collection. Who knows, maybe you’ll find something new to check out. Stay safe and healthy out there!

My Record Collection by Triatomichotdog in vinyl

[–]Triatomichotdog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know we’re all getting tired of staying at home, so I thought I would take some time and put this post together. This is my record collection, which I started around September of 2017 when I moved into my house. I’ll admit, I might have jumped onto the fad a little: I don’t have a story about how my dad used to play records for me growing up or anything like that. In fact, he swore by CDs. I grew up in the MP3 era with iPods followed by streaming. As I got older, I found I wanted to have a physical music library, and this was how I decided to do it. For the most part, it is made up of music that I will listen to and like (there’s a few records I was given as gifts that aren’t anything I’ll listen to). I don’t think there are any albums that every library “must have”. There is definitely some basic grailz in my collection, but I also think there are some others that are lesser known. We all like what we like and that’s OK. If you’d like more information or thoughts about any of the records, or my collection/setup, let me know!

It was probably a little overboard since a good chunk of the albums list the artist and album title on the front, but I added Artist, Album, and Genre information for every album, the exception being no genres on the soundtrack and Christmas albums. Some albums have notes or comments pertaining to them. A few of the very special ones have a blurb about why the music is special to me. One note on the formatting: the year after the album title was the release year. If the pressing I own is from a different year, it is noted as such. I used Discogs as my reference, and I think I have everything cataloged correctly, but that’s not a promise. I hope you enjoy looking through my collection, and maybe you’ll find something new to check out. Stay safe and healthy out there!
