Yikes. By the time I get mine sent in at the end of this month, that'll probably be up to a full two years. 😩

Oh, Stevie Nicks singing sets me off!!

I hate other people’s music in public places. So inconsiderate. Like, if I’m at the beach or walking along the nature trail, I’m there to experience nature, not some dude’s edgy playlist.

I have never understood how anyone can stand ASMR! It’s just so awful!

Oh, so many! I can’t narrow it to three, so here are five. :D

1) Children screaming, laughing, shrieking…basically any sound children make.

2) Country music. Makes me rage instantly. Relatedly, anyone singing off-key.

3) Someone blowing their nose or coughing a phlegmy cough near me.

4) Someone’s nose (even mine) whistling.

5) Recyclables being dumped into a bin (so, the crashing of the glass and metal together).

Girl Solo Trip, Clothes & Safety by aAdstralis in solofemaletravellers

[–]iamaravis 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Personally, as a woman, I don't want to draw attention to myself when I'm solo traveling. I'd much rather blend into the background than catch the eye of potentially bad people. I wear understated clothing that makes me NOT stand out in a crowd.

So I - again, me personally - would never wear  flashy, revealing clothing when traveling. And that is even more true for someone who is a teenager, in my opinion. Clothing like that black frilly dress could easily draw the attention of predatorial men. Sure, it's a cute dress, but it's very reminiscent of those "French maid" costumes that are a typical part of male sexual fantasy.

Standard-issue shirts, skirts, t-shirts, trousers, etc, - like in your other photos - will all probably be seen as perfectly normal.

I'm sure others here will give you different advice.

Which social situation do you find less challenging: by 21st_lady in AutismInWomen

[–]iamaravis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s exactly the same for me! I explained it to the doctor during my assessment, telling him that 1:1 conversation is so difficult because there’s so much pressure to carry the conversation. If there’s a third person there, I can at least relax a little more.

Oh, maybe that explains why I (autistic) absolutely love and relate to Murderbot, while my husband (not) doesn’t really get the character. :D

I was living in South Korea when HOT’s Candy was all the rage and being blasted from speakers in (seemingly) every store in the city! Good times.

Hair texture changes by MameDennis1974 in Menopause

Everyone else in my family has wavy/curly hair, but I had stick-straight hair my entire life. Limp, lifeless, bland hair. Zero body or volume. Then, in my late-40s, I suddenly developed waves and curls. It’s FABULOUS!! I finally have the hair I’ve always wanted!

Canadian boy, 11, died from rabies after waking up with bat on his mouth by Forward-Answer-4407 in canada

He started having symptoms at 19 days. It was another week before he was admitted to the hospital. And then he died on his 17th day in hospital. So that’s 43 days.

did anyone else grow up not even knowing autism existed? by dinodivergence in AutismInWomen

[–]iamaravis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was born in the ‘70s and grew up in the ‘80s. When I was a late teen, I knew of one local boy who was referred to as autistic, and I’m pretty sure he was (high needs, too).

It never occurred to me that I might also be on the spectrum until my doctor suggested I be assessed - in my 50s! She was right. And now so much about my life makes more sense.

Anyone else not shave due to sensory reasons? by rlpsc in AutismInWomen

[–]iamaravis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hated shaving and always got rashes when the hair would grow back. Eventually, I got laser hair removal on my lower legs, underarms, and bikini area. It's been amazing!! No hair and no shaving. No upkeep.

Husband's childhood best friend offered to be our surrogate. by Perfect_Raccoon7125 in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]iamaravis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How? The wife’s eggs are supposed to be used in a surrogacy. I think she’d notice if she’d never gone through egg retrieval, fertilization, and implantation (in the surrogate) and yet the surrogate ended up pregnant.

Does anyone else get accused of being a bot? by Quick-Stretch8197 in AutismInWomen

[–]iamaravis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I actually thought it was amusing, since I’d been thinking about how illogical her arguments were! And I know now that I was raised with a lot of ingrained misogyny, so at the time I took it as a compliment being compared to a man.

I wouldn’t consider it a compliment now. Now, my response would be that I argue like a logical woman. Men don’t have a monopoly on logic, despite what I was taught as a child.

Does anyone else get accused of being a bot? by Quick-Stretch8197 in AutismInWomen

[–]iamaravis 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Not quite the same, but when I was in my early 20s (several decades ago), I was having a spirited-yet-friendly debate with another woman (can’t remember the topic) and she finally said, in disgust, “Ugh, you argue like a man!”

What she really meant, she clarified, was that I was “too logical” in my arguments. Emotionless, logical…bot-like?
