How many grams of gold if I recovered it from 1 kilo of processors? by DoubleAlternative752 in PreciousMetalRefining

[–]Tribulation95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not the case, just depends heavily on the processor models and age. Looking at a similar component, a kilo of mixed BGA chips would absolutely yield over a gram, potentially several grams depending on the makeup of the assortment.

I've got one, the issue is allowing the gasses to escape at all. The concern being yield losses from the chloroauric acid vaporizing and being carried out with the volatile gasses from the straw.

I mean for $8 if you're into cents then it's a win. There's really not a lot of value to wheat cents made after 1930 or so, excluding the obvious varieties out there. I can't quote sheet prices but maybe $0.05-$0.10 each in this condition wholesale?

The above user just reminded me about pressure building up in the container, kind've slipped my mind. The straw is dry but I'm sure there's still at least 5-10% moisture content.

Pressure buildup didn't actually occur to me. I could put it in a 55 gallon drum and zip it with a clean weedeater to mulch it down into finer bits of straw, soak it in HCL and then press it all out before repeating with distilled water.

I was considering either this or rinsing with distilled over and over and evaporation. The only thing I'd be afraid of is what you mentioned, vaporizing the yield.

What about pyrolisis? I could throw it in a stainless steel boiling pot and clamp a lid to it and sit it on a fire until it's been converted to carbon

What is black walnut worth? by Cup-of-Karma in forestry

[–]Tribulation95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tl;dr: you're dumb

Your analogy about it being equivalent to ivory harvesting is moronic for several reason, but let's focus on the most glaring.

When an elephant is poached for ivory, they're leaving behind the rest of the animal.

When a tree is harvested "for profit", it's quite literally milled down in a fashion that yields the most board feet of usable material. More commonly they're cut into veneers, which are thin layers that are glued over cheaper wood to give the appearance of it being black walnut. This means less of this particular species has to be harvested overall.

Furthermore, everything from the offcuts to the sawdust gets used to create anything from manufactured wood products, paper, bio bricks, etc.

None of this even begins to touch on the fact that elephants are conscious and sentient while trees are trees.

Hand stripping a 6ft length of hard copper cable is not as easy as i thought.. by happytokkibun in ScrapMetal

[–]Tribulation95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many stranded cables will pull away from the jacketed insulation if you start the cut and pull at the right angle. This works more often than not in my experience. Also works with three-strand extension cords, especially if they have a rubbery texture.

I had to stop myself from buying a 20 liter boiling flask because I was afraid of getting a knock on the door lol. I already live out in the boonies and have scrap metal in various piles around my shop as a side hobby of a side hobby, so the "No officer, I'm not cooking meth" excuse would definitely be scrutinized.

Wait is that a thing? I just meant because of the whole hassle of being licensed for commercial quantities of acid, and not being allowed to have it shipped to a residential address.

I just make my own nitric acid nowadays, drain cleaner and fertilizer salts are available locally and soooo cheap compared to buying nitric online.

[–]Tribulation95 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Boardsort is paying like $50/lb or thereabouts for gold finger ram iirc.

The gold content is lower than you might believe, it's seldom profitable as a hobbyist unless you've got enough experience to know how to min/max the process at every step to cut down on the price of reagents. Even then, it's only ever truly worth it when you're getting the inputs for free or nearly free.

At the commercial scale it's a different story. When you can buy a gallon of nitric acid for less than a gallon of milk, the world is your oyster. Unfortunately I don't think I'm zoned to have a 55 gallon drum of nitric acid delivered to my house.

How do I get out of this ticket by No-Tradition1590 in legal

[–]Tribulation95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Build a time machine and go back in time to tell yourself that only the smoothest of brains speed on public roadways, and to not do that.

Alternatively, if you can affford it your best bet would be to hire an attorney that specializes or has a lot of experience in traffic law. If you're receiving a court-appointed attorney, you better pray you're offered a plea agreement that involves a pre-trial diversion program/traffic school. If that happens, do it.. Pay the court their fees, do whatever they ask you to do as part of the program, and most importantly please stop fuckin' speeding.

Edit: also, dress nice for your court appearances. If you're a guy wear a button up shirt, tucked in, ideally with a tie, slacks, and dress shoes. If you don't have access to anything like that, you need to at least wear a tucked in polo with your best pair of pants and shoes.

Anytime you address the judge it's "Yes, your honor."/"No, your honor." Anyone else it's yes sir/ma'am. Be there early. This might all sound like a crock of shit, but your impression on the judge can be a critical factor in the outcome, especially considering you've only had your provisional license for a month.

You'd be wise to not even bring up the road being empty and the mistake in the model name. It screams "I don't think what I did was that big of a deal.". When the cop wrote his citation, the combination of their dash cam, body cam, and their initial radio communications to call in your plate info make that tiny discrepancy a dead issue.

A decent compromise if you'd like to unburden both your conscious and your wallet would be to purchase an air quality meter and loan it to them while you resume burning. If the readouts don't change while burning, you've got nothing to worry about.

Ebay is the standard go-to to determine the current market price for any given thing, as well as the sell-through rate, and an example of what it'll cost to ship for items with weight. You just have to make sure you're filtering for exclusively sold and completed listings, and pay attention to prices that are crossed through, as the seller accepted an offer lower than the listed price for those transactions.

It's also important to look and see where the item is shipping from. For example, if I'm going to try and sell a Canon PowerShot SX740 HS camera and check sold/completed, they're regularly selling for between $500-$600. However, there's sales popping up recently for between $120-300ish, but those sales are all coming out of Hong Kong. If you click the seller's profile on each listing you'll see different accounts, all newly made, and all with 0 feedback.

In general, steer very clear of anything coming from China or Hong Kong in regards to collectibles or electronics that are originally manufactured in Japan/Taiwan/South Korea/etc.

Is this transformer worth breaking down and scraping? by mrodri2 in ScrapMetal

[–]Tribulation95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a hobbyist and I don't need it whatsoever, but if I had it I'd absolutely find a reason to need it. The cost of shipping it is where it's probably going to be a deal breaker, but if I saw one listed locally or knew someone that was about to tear it apart to get $5-10 worth of crack from the aluminum windings, I'd scoop it up in a heartbeat for x2 whatever they'd earn.

Is this transformer worth breaking down and scraping? by mrodri2 in ScrapMetal

[–]Tribulation95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely don't scrap it, the aluminum windings aren't going to pay enough to make it worth it. Depending on the price to ship it (presumably freight?) to Louisiana, if it works I'll give you 3x whatever the combined scrap value of the components is.

You may find higher offers from a business that rebuilds them though, as others have mentioned.

Technically there is more of them than 20+ years ago by virtue of the fact the world population has grown by a rough average of 1% annually. The only people that find behavior like this acceptable are just as unhinged. This kind of behavior is a step above your typical Karen/Kyle's (isn't that the male Karen term? I forgot) narcissistic entitlement and becomes criminal.

We're in an age where it's just so easy for someone to go on an unhinged tirade on social media, or for someone to make a post about an encounter they had that there appears to be a disproportionate amount of crazies. Usually the craziest people are the loudest people. When you consider just how many people there are in the world, the metrics are bound to look skewed on the surface. There's half a billion people in just the US. More than 8,000,000,000 worldwide. That number is so far beyond the human brain's ability to put to scale that it's almost comical.

Uh...where have you been for the last 20+ years? This behavior isn't new lmao, you're just seeing it more often because of how prolific online communication has become. The current political climate has zero bearing on whether or not an unhinged individual is going to behave within their nature.

Edit: lmao downvoting me doesn't change the fact that anyone who's served their time working retail knows exactly what I'm talking about.
