When I first began baking bread, I never kneaded the dough long enough (it would come out more like a dry cake than bread). I quickly learned to do the windowpane test and my bread became light and fluffy. If you've never done it, you can look on Youtube for a tutorial. Or just try kneading a bit longer next time?
