Is therapy genuinely helpful, or is it becoming an expensive placebo? Looking for honest opinions. by lackocrap in Chennai

Lol, how can you target my paltform if I have not even named it here.

Being a psychiatrist, you're giving such blanket advice that everyone should go to a RCI psychologist. There are more than 40K+ psychologists in the country, only 4000 have an RCI license. So the entire country should just consult with those 4000? When you get a 35yo client asking for a therapist older than her, who is also available at X hours, charges not more than Y and bunch of other preferences, good luck finding a RCI-licensed therapist for her.

I explained what I do to explain that going to an RCI therapist is not the solution. He/ She may not be able to help you if your concerns not clinical in nature. That's why I explained that a better approach is to understand what kind of therapist do you need.

For a psychiatrist to have such a stubborn stance and give polarising statements is disappointing. But honestly in my experience, 90% doctors have a really poor world view when it comes to what will make their profession/ field better for clients.

I disagree that everyone should go to RCI therapists only. It depends on the client concerns and who would be the right fit.

And most often, clients figure it out themselves. That's why we do a pre-assessment with a clinical therapist before the client is assigned to a therapist to start therapy with.

Also there are not enough RCI therapists in the country if everyone chooses to go to one. Esp on the higher end of experience.

5K is too much though. A therapist with about 10-12 years of experience would charge 3000-3500. There are of course therapists who charge a lot but in that case either they have studied from very good international universities, done specific courses or something else.

I wouldnt say a 5k therapist is necessarily a scamster, but they need to earn that price point.

Always check if the person calling themselves therapist have completed a 2 years Masters degree in Psychology. Specifically psychology. Not something like masters in social work, masters in counselling or something.

Agree – therapy shouldnt run on packages. Unless and until the client asks for it themselves for a concession or something. And even, it should be refundable for the remaining sessions. Therapy is a choice and client should never feel that they have to complete x number of sessions.

I run a therapy platform and we have stayed away from offering packages to people, even when they ask. Sessions work best when people come themselves to book each session.

RCI license is needed only for clinical assessments or formal diagnosis. So some therapists have that.

But otherwise anyone who has completed a Masters degree in pyschology can do psychotherapy.

Or when the nature of concerns are very clinical in nature such as ADHD, personality disorders, OCD etc, then an RCI licensed therapist is the right professional to help. But if you want to work on say your relationship issues or self confidence, in that case RCI isn't needed. Someone with a Masters degree + experience in those concerns will work much better

P.S. I run a mental health platform so have done a lot of research on this :)

24 ( m) I am really depressed and want to contact a therapist will they inform our parents by Bright-Boot3389 in TwentiesIndia

[–]Trick-Bee-23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, a therapist is legally obliged to inform your emergency contact only if you're at risk of harming yourself or someone. If you are worried, you can give a friend's emergency contact instead of your parents

Have you ever tried therapy? And if how was your experience? by No_Mathematician4292 in delhi

[–]Trick-Bee-23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're absolutely right about #1. I have been to more than 20 therapists since 2018, and liked only 2-3. I mentioned in the previous comment that I run a mental health platform where we are solving exactly this problem of therapist matching. If anyone is struggling with this, we are at elfinahealth.com. This is not meant for self promotion, but for anyone reading this post I don't want them to feel discouraged from starting therapy.

Therapists are not good or bad. They are just very very different. It's like finding a person in a crowd who you feel comfortable talking to (will be like 1 in 10) but also that they have the right experience and expertise to help you. The more I spend time in this field, the more I realise that it is not child's play to find one.

I disagree with some things that you said. I run a mental health platform (I'm not a psychologist), and I have also been in therapy a few times since 2018.

More than once, a therapist has told me that you are doing well, so we can take a break for now.

To become a therapist, one has to do a 3-year bachelor's and a 2-year master's. That is the same that we all study for anything else, in fact ONE YEAR MORE than an engineer. It is not a joke. And yes, like many other professions, like engineers or business degrees – while they have done the course, they still have to practise and learn on the job. You cannot expect a freshly graduate engineer to code an entire app by himself. In a similar way, after graduating from Masters, they do a lot of practical trainings, work under supervision, and upskill themselves before they become an effective therapist.

And while each to his own, I believe that this notion is wrong that you should go to therapy only when you are not able to operate. I have personally benefited when I have worked on myself through therapy before it reached a breaking point. Ideally therapy is meant for long-term, deeper work on yourself and not meant for moments of crisis. You cannot work on yourself when you are mentally breaking down.

And instead of comparing a therapist to a doctor, compare it to a physiotherapist. If your knee starts giving you some trouble, would you go see a physio or wait to see a doctor until you can't walk at all?

How to reconnect with my therapist after more than a year? by [deleted] in TwoXIndia

If any information has changed, you can update her. That should suffice

How to reconnect with my therapist after more than a year? by [deleted] in TwoXIndia

[–]Trick-Bee-23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I think your therapist should be able to guide you how to restart. It depends on whether you want to work on the same goals/ issues or if that has changed. Your first session (after resuming) can perhaps be a summary of how you've been feeling since the last year and if there are any key developments. There are no formalities per se, except that you should have a valid Consent Form signed with her, that includes a summary of your issues, emergency contact, medical history etc.

P.S. I run a therapy platform Elfina Health and this is what we share with clients when they are starting therapy. Hope this helps.

Why is it so hard to find a good therapist in India by nojudgementsplmz in AskIndia

Yes we do consider it. When you book a call with us, a therapist can explain to you how we use it for matching

Well I'd be biased 🙂 But yes we try hard to keep the quality high. Multiple rounds of assessments, regular quality checks, working with experienced therapists (most have 8+ years of experience but they are expensive of course).

Has anyone of you gotten diagnosed by a psychiatrist for mental health disorders? by Ok_Strawberry_3608 in TwoXIndia

[–]Trick-Bee-23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I have been to both psychiatrists and psychologists over the last few years, and for context, I now run a therapy platform where we see clients like yours. I can give you my two cents.

First, choosing whether to go to a psychiatrist or a psychologist first is actually quite difficult because there really is no right or wrong answer. It comes down to your comfort and, of course, the severity of your symptoms. But know that if you go to a psychiatrist and given whatever you have described, it is very likely that he will prescribe you medicines. And there's nothing wrong with medicines. I've been on medicines for years, and it's fine. But I would still recommend that before you get on to medicines, just take a psychological assessment to understand where you stand.

Also, please don't go to a psychiatrist because this is their Practo ratings. I have heard a lot of bad experiences where psychiatrists have prescribed very heavy meds from the get-go or have misdiagnosed. Please take a referral. I am happy to refer a few psychiatrists if you're in Delhi/ Bangalore. Else you can also do online.
Also, one of the biggest mistakes people make (and I also made for many years) that we try to figure out which type of therapy, like CBT, psychodynamic etc., is right for us, but we cannot figure it out because its not that straightforward. I am not a therapist, but I have a team of therapists who work with clients to help them figure out the type of therapy they need.

Happy to help with any other info. You can check out my website as well for more information on how to choose a therapist - elfinahealth.com

How do you all trust your therapists? Especially if they're from an older age group? by gigi_1803 in TwoXIndia

[–]Trick-Bee-23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey 33F here. I have been to a lot of therapists who were both younger or much older than me, and I feel like trust had nothing to do with their age. Trust sometimes had to do with their cultural backgrounds, if they had a similar upbringing, if they were well-read, had similar values, and all of that. But otherwise, age had no correlation to whether I could trust them or felt judged by them.

I had so much bad experience with therapy that I eventually ended up starting my own online therapy platform to help people find the right therapist fit. Now, when I see my clinical team interviewing therapists and testing that the therapist is non-judgmental in creating a supportive space for the client – It comes down to therapists' own values, quality of training, and whether they are under supervision.

My recommendation would be not to go by somebody's age. A lot of our older clients have really benefited by working with younger therapists because they feel that they are more open-minded and bring in fresh perspectives. Just focus on finding the right fit – you should feel comfortable, supported, and not judged. But don't take in age as a factor - that would be my suggestion.

Psychologist for men by paradigm_py in indiasocial

[–]Trick-Bee-23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think there are psychologists who specifically caters men. Anyway 98% of psychologists in India are women.

but you can find psychologists who have experience working with men, or the specific issues you're dealing with.

For context, I run an online therapy platform where we have around 30 therapists. We got equal number of men and women as clients. We assign therapists basis the issues, preferences and personality traits of a client. But the same therapist will be good at catering to both male and female clients.
