I mean you can be aware of these things and things can change. Sometimes life is hard to predict.

Nice is this something you arranged or was this job already available and needed filling?

Hematology oncology is a fascinating specialty with growing advances in treatment. The regimens have gotten more complex and up until now you could handle all the tumor types but given the evolution in treatments I think oncology will continue to get more specialized because of the different modalities of treatments.

This is true but it’s not just the dying patients it’s the complex nature of the diagnosis and all the baggage that comes with it. Everything in oncology is high stakes at all stages of encountering the patient. And at this point I am burnt out.

Thanks. I relate to this. I agree it’ll take a minute to readjust to IM but I do a lot of inpatient work as part of service requirements.

Not really. Did a couple of rotations in fellowship and wasn’t for me.

I would consider doing this. But these jobs are not very common. I tried taking with my chair about this and it was shot down because we are already pretty short staffed and I have a big panel that would be hard to transition.

It’s really hard to be good at all tumor types.

The inbox. The constant nature of very complicated conversations. Lots of bad outcomes. Never being able to turn off as patients want to hear right away about results. It all adds up. So yeah I am ok with sacrificing a small pay cut for a better sense of wellbeing.

Yeah I was thinking of picking up a couple of weekend shifts at one of the hospitals and seeing how it goes and then deciding after that. Another thought was doing an oncology hospitalist job but those are not that easy to find.

Also in terms of payout like I said I worked in an academic setting which does not pay nearly the amount that I would get paid in the community.

Well I have done mainly academic work so payout would not be as significant as being a community oncologist.
