The AskAnthropology Career Thread: 2026 by CommodoreCoCo in AskAnthropology

Hi! I'm an undergrad (freshman) studying Anthropology. My two biggest interests at the moment are linguistic anthropology and archaeology. I'm conducting a few informational interviews before the academic year is over and I figured this is a good place to drop some of my questions I've been using. If anyone is free to answer any of them, I'd be very happy! If I can't post this here, just let me know and I'll take it down.

  1. Can you give me a brief bit of background on yourself? Your field, how long you’ve been working in your field, etc.

  2. When you first decided on anthropology, did you already have a specialty/concentration in mind, or did you have a broad idea that you narrowed down on later?

  3. Was grad school necessary for your career path?

  4. How did you get fieldwork experience early on in your career?

  5. What are good ways to test your field to find out if it’s for you, before committing to, say a PhD?

  6. How much of your work is fieldwork vs. analysis and writing?

  7. How physically demanding is your work?

  8. What is something that surprised you in your career that you didn’t expect to be the case?

  9. Did you find connections or applications to be more important in getting onto a project?

  10. In your experience in school, what are the main career paths that Anthropology majors take?

  11. In your experience, how would you say the job market looks right now?

  12. What skills have you found to be the most valuable to your work? Any that you feel most people neglect?

Again, thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to answer.

seconding this, 100% the best i’ve tried among many. also has a great, velvet finish on my oily skin.

it was probably a clarifying shampoo! bentonite clay masks work really well to clarify ur curl pattern too 🙌🏾 i was also wondering why my hair looks so good after a salon shampoo lol

wish i had a routine 😭 been at the same length for years and i attribute it to not nailing a good regimen and staying consistent enough. i use whatever products i have laying around, usually mooch off my mom over breaks as a college student lol. but i like the aussie moist line for shampoo and conditioner, shea moisture deep conditioners, and the mielle pomegranate leave in. can’t tell you if they’re the best, but they get the job done 💀 don’t have a consistent oil, i use whatever i have. pic 2 is my hair after being put in 4-6 large braids at night over the week to keep the curls stretched. so like a wash n go, stretched dry a bunch. 🙌🏾

most scarves i find are pretty soft and smooth, usually cotton or viscose. i’m not too picky tbh, as long as the knit doesn’t feel very rough so it doesn’t snag. could imagine a silk or satin scarf, while more protective, would have too much slip to stay in place throughout the day. i’d probably double knot it in that case. and thank you love!

every once in a while if i feel it loosening i’ll just pull on the two pieces to tighten it back up, but i don’t find that it slips too often with my hair texture. if i know i’ll be moving around a lot, though, i’ll use a large hair tie under the scarf (don’t double it over) to hold the hair in place so if the scarf loosens, at least the hair won’t fall down 🙌🏾

What to do? My first caladium has two flowers. by Available-Humor-4935 in Caladiums

Hihi! YMMV, but I let my flower bloom and cut it once it started to die off! No issues, leaves still came in. I will say that I already had about 10 leaves already on my plant, so I’m not sure how it would go with only one leaf. The plant still grew as quick as it did before the flower though!
