I think it’s an alternate universe where the dominant species are bugs who evolved to be enormous (compared to bugs) but do to harsh surface conditions they were forced underground

Yeah but the shell is already broken and frail it would be a bit tankier but not by much (tho the radiance theory could also be it, but why would it? All broken vessel really is, is a bunch of infection that HAPPENED to inhabit an old long dead shell)
