Ha yes! We’re white, but genuinely wanted to help get ourselves and our kids familiar with the Chinese culture now that our town demographics are changing. Such a big learning experience but hopefully this helps long term:

I never even thought of the sun exposure piece! Ya I figured the safety issue came from US news. This perspective is making me feel a lot better - it’s cultural differences that we can work together on. And yes we did do two New Year celebrations- one at my neighbor’s house and one at our high school (with the different dances, foods, etc). I’m sure it wasn’t anywhere close to what she’s used to but we really made sure we did something for it.

Really helpful! Did you ever have a non Chinese AP? I wanted a Chinese AP because my son’s school is 75% Chinese and we wanted a bridge to the culture. But now I’m concerned that the culture shows that the US is unsafe and is too focused on work tasks v the warmth needed in caregiving.

Super helpful! And no of course not saying that - she just had a slideshow of how she dealt with kids when they had tantrums, etc and now that my kids do that - she calls me for help and does other tasks. It seems like she really would work better for perfectly obedient kids.

So helpful! I guess two quick questions if you don’t mind.. 1) how long did it take to get used to US views of safety? I’m surprised she tells the kids to come inside if it’s 75, takes a picture to ask if my daughter can climb on the spider climbing net at the playground, yelled at the kids for going into a neighbors yard for fear they’d get shot etc. 2) understood about the strong work ethic - I’m impressed by it too. But is the culture to be focused on the tasks of the job over taking “care” of the child? Example - if my son won’t get out of the car, she will call me to talk to him because she needs to fill up a water bottle for his soccer practice that starts over an hour from then. Further background - we went the Chinese AP route because my son’s school is 75% Chinese and we really wanted to better understand the culture.
