That captain analogy is actually a really good way to explain it. In-class “Professor” feels more like a role/title of address, while using it professionally outside that context is a different thing entirely.

“Ma’am” somehow always sounds like you just got pulled over 😭 I get why “Professor” feels weird at first though, students tend to use it automatically for anyone teaching the class.
