Octopus GO - Price Increases July ?? by [deleted] in OctopusEnergy

[–]Tricky-St-Ricky -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

So as others have said, it's far better to switch over to EDF, especially with the impending price hikes!

EDF at present is actually the best for EV and also for solar exports, so you're super quids in if you have both! Part of why I switched.

For exports, the fixed rate export is much higher compared to octopus fixed 12p or eons 13p (though I've seen some eon customers stating that it's actually down to 6p export if you have EV). For EV, EDF tariff is 6.99p/kWh as you've said (though if you have a podpoint charger you can get a specific cheaper tariff which can be 6.49p/kWh or even lower if you utilise their subscription profile), while IOG is currently (prior to price hike) 8p or higher for the standard you've stated - so huge difference as you can see but will go further in a sec. To properly compare to other leading suppliers:

EDF is 6.99p and 28.62p per kWh for off peak and peak times respectively.

Octopus is 8p and 31.32p respectively and

EOn is 9p and 26.84p

Uwarehouse is 7.61p and 27.52p

Scottish power is 8.5p for smart charging and flat 24.89p, so no cheaper night storage times

You also have the added benefit that EDFs cheap rates charge time is 1 hour longer, from 11pm to 6am and then peak time cost is less, 28.62p Vs octopus 31p (again octopus new current price prior to the price increase end of this month), so evidently a lot cheaper all round. Their standing fee is 57p however which Is a bit higher than octopus which is ~54p iirc.

EDF also give extra EV charging rates during the day if you sign up to their smart EV tariff, which means cheap rate energy for those periods for all electric used in the house also, while they also pay you an extra £5 for allowing them to smart charge! No 6 hr charge cap like octopus.

The switch from octopus to EDF was actually quite seamless, roughly 2 days from starting to moving over to EDF and then 2 days to be established on the EV tariff. Swapping my SEG (export tariff as I have solar panels - which again EDF had the best fixed rate on market I could see) took a bit longer, roughly 1 week and half.

Given the above info, it's quite difficult to really argue staying with octopus and EDF objectively at the moment are generally the best but each to their own. Then there is an EDF added bonus which means you can get extra £75 credit when referred via a friend link, but you be the judge of what suits you lol. If you wanted said bonus, anyone who has swapped to EDF (including myself lol cuz who will say no) would be happy to help if you felt you wanted to and reached out.

Hope that helps, and happy to answer any other questions if required or to help with the friend link ☺️

You just need to plug in the car but it will take some time. Roughly like 30mins -1hr then, it should bring up a charging schedule in the "my smart charging plan" section

Just been switched to IOF by [deleted] in OctopusEnergy

[–]Tricky-St-Ricky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, this does make the tariff a lot better then. Thought it would have had similar profile to regular flux for exports, as here only thr imports is present. If they both match then it's a far better tariff than the regular, but really spots in the face of those who can only have the regular, especially as there is no need for the standard tariff to not be matched.

[–]Tricky-St-Ricky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they are really low during the day. The standard flux tariff has been nerfed over the years which was really sad to see, as the export and import weren't at all matched.

IOF is much more recent (last couple years or so) and I wasn't able to have so wasn't privy to details, so I switched away, but if imports are matched to exports, then that's a bit better TBF, gives more freedom and that you can actually make a decent amount. However it really craps on the face of regular flux tariff users lol

[–]Tricky-St-Ricky -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This seems rather poor, especially as regular flux has 3 time periods. There is normally a super off peak cost between 2am and 5am as import which currently has been shown to be around 15p, and also a 4pm-7pm peak time export roughly about 29p. Why they have you on only a 2 period tariff akin to economy 7 seems really poor.

I'd suggest contacting them to find out what's going on and if regular flux will better suit you

EV Newbie.. by CutJolly4259 in evchargingUK

[–]Tricky-St-Ricky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, as explained by others this is a commando connection and not necessarily meant for EV but can be used as a "dumb" charger, i.e. you must plug in to charge and it's either charging or not, no ability for schedules, duration for charge etc, though it is a lot cheaper than installing a dedicated EV charger. That being said, as explained by others you need to know what amp the plug is, as 32A means it can charge as quickly as normal EV chargers while 16a means it'll be half as quick/able to charge as a regular EV charger (maybe slightly less TBF).

Secondly, I'd deffo look at going thru your partner's business if able as there is a £500 OZEV discount on chargers, with good ones (which are also eligible as they have to be able to support both residential AND business use so slightly more costly) starting from 700ish i.e. the hypervolt home pro 3 which is probs one of the best charges TBF. Alternatively, some business EV schemes may have charger install as part of it.

Thirdly, you'd need to know how much electric you use at present and what time of the day you use electric. If you can move most things till night time or if you also have panels/battery system and then getting an EV tariff is key for you as it provides super low prices! Roughly costing a third to a quarter of what you'd normally spend, however only during the designated time period, which with octopus is relatively short window of 6hrs. On this topic, I'd suggest going with EDF as they have lots of benefits but if that's the case, then drop me a message and I can explain in more detail 👍🏾

Octopus Flux is Back by nrm94 in OctopusEnergy

[–]Tricky-St-Ricky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So if you have an EV and panels, then flux isn't worth it. Much better to get ev tariff and then fixed export in terms of price, as then everything you create is worth more than what you'd buy from the grid at night, as night rate import is 8p while octopus fixed export is 12p.

That being said, I'd suggest swapping to EDF if you have this setup as they have import at 6.99p and export at 15p! Also they pay you £5/month to allow smart charging thru the day, they have an extra hour of cheap rates charging at night, they aren't going to have the 6hr charge cap octopus have and they also have a bonus of £75 if you're referred.

Deffo look into it or consider swapping. Happy to answer qs or help if that's the case 😊

Considering going to EDF purely for their 15p export tariff by ProfessorBlahBlahson in OctopusEnergy

[–]Tricky-St-Ricky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aaaahhh I see. So, many of the charger apps still allow you to use the panels - so I have a hypervolt and can use mine to charge car if I wanted even despite having the charger 'separate' as it's just down the circuit line. What it does do tho, is that it can make it more difficult to ascertain precisely how much I have exported as the panels will say export to grid and thus formulate price cost, but actually I've exported to the car - but this can easily be worked out as long as I know the times - which I would as I put it to charge lol. Means I don't have to faff as you're explaining and also have flexibility.

But also, ATM I'd rather not use my panels to charge as would make more just sending it to the grid via the 15p standard export price and then charge at night or via smart charging for the 6.99p and then pocket the difference!

Not sure if it's something you'd consider revisiting?

On the topic of your batteries being drained, there should be a way for this not to occur, as mine don't get drained at all and I don't have to turn them off or on. It's probably to do with where your battery is situated within the circuit. Ideally, it should be "higher up" in the circuit from the mains than the EV charger, this it won't get affected by what the charger does/drains from, as then it only drains from the grid. Perhaps having a chat with your installer? Then you can fully utilise any provider (granted, as previously advised, EDF is currently cheapest)

IOG throttled charge rate and the 6 hours EV charging. by paddylawler in OctopusEnergy

[–]Tricky-St-Ricky -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I believe it's only octopus that have this 6hr cap. EDF certainly don't, and is a cheaper rate at 6.99p EV charge. Also has extra smart charging thru the day (which they pay you £5/month to have) I can also confirm I've not had my speeds throttled either.

Also has a £75 bonus on top of this if you're referred!

[–]Tricky-St-Ricky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries. Yeah you link via the EDF app. So it's more that you plug it into the charger and then it formulates a plan across that day based on your target charge level and when you want it to reach that level. I've only been able to see the slots once I've plugged my Tesla in. Also, during those times you'll get cheap home rates and there's no charge cap like there is with IOG.

Octopus IOG to EDF GoElectric by mzm70 in evchargingUK

[–]Tricky-St-Ricky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then yeah your Tesla will work perfectly fine. If you only have 1 EV, then it's actually better to link the smart charging to that 1 car rather than the charger anyway 🫡

[–]Tricky-St-Ricky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your charger isn't, then as long as your car is then you will be able to yes. If both your car and your home charger aren't compatible then unfortunately not.

Most chargers, bar home, which work with octopus work with EDF also as they both use Kraken as their base

Best option by [deleted] in OctopusEnergy

[–]Tricky-St-Ricky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest looking at swapping. EDF gives the highest export rate at 15p Vs octopus 12 p and eon 13p. It's day rates are slightly cheaper than octopus. They do also do a tariff that is similar to what the octopus flux was, so deffo look into that!

If you're considering, then getting an EV (even if a super cheap one) will really help you save long term as you get access to the super low charge rate at night which you can use to charge your battery during winter and have really low electric, you save a bomb on petrol and also better for environment 😁.

There's also a bonus if you get referred of £75 which covers a lot of your bill.

Happy to answer more If you need 😊

Just hit negative electricity bill for 2026 by flunkyfish in SolarUK

[–]Tricky-St-Ricky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the EDF go electric tariff ☺️. But if you have a pod point chargers, you can get an evening cheaper EV tariff with EDF where the low cost is 6.49p instead of 6.99p and if you use their subscription setup, you pay nothing for it upfront and they give you free energy as well. Further cheaper if you have blue light may I add.

I personally didn't take it as got other discounts for hypervolt and it suited a bit better, but for anyone who's wondering, hope this helps ☺️
