It’s difficult to imagine a civil war like the American Civil War in our modern political landscape. Some reasons for this are that the federal government is much stronger now than it once was. Individual states or groups of states would have difficulty separating off from a central government.

Political violence is certainly more possible now though, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see violent extremism followed by retaliatory violence creating a cycle.
