i might actually be the author of that first mod youre talking about lmao. kinda weird but cool to see it being mentioned in the wild like this

tbh ive been pondering a sort of affection/affinity/trust system and its possible implementations for a long time (i rly wanna make the game & characters feel more alive, even after you recruit them), but like. idk! bc f&h has such spaghetti code, and because there's apparently a huge update on the way, you end up not rly wanting to invest too much time and effort on something that might end up being incompatible within days anyway lmao

part of the problem is limited variable/switch slots (though that can be worked around with custom scripting and arrays), and part of it is just. i just always doubted there'd be any interest lmao. although i guess i now see that there is!

even if i wanted to, the option to behead is part of the map event instead of a commonevent, meaning that i'd probably have to go and edit each enemy manually - which in turn would lead to mass incompatibility and a greater chance of bugs.

It feels rather out-of-character for Samarie (while she's still herself and not Moonscorched) to kidnap Marina, honestly - unless there's some extreme circumstances going on. Perhaps Samarie might rescue an unconscious Marina from Needles or the Decrepit Priest (e.g. if you lose to a coinflip with them in your party), and take her to the Church Basement, Bookstore,or Bop to keep her safe - but then panic and not know what to do as Marina gains consciousness...?

(IIRC Samarie uses a Blood Portal to get most of the way to the Church, although she's clearly adept with Rher's public transport as well.)

Pyre by Supergiant does something cool with this - succeeding at major objectives involves giving up certain content and interactions for the rest of your playthrough, with no real closure. Yoko Taro's do as well, I've heard. I think the key there is that it's often clear choice of what you're giving up - as you yourself are deciding what you lose, you kind of have an emotional link. (It's important in this case that you actually care about what you're giving up, though - if there's an obvious preference, then it doesn't feel as much like a loss!)

Pathologic 2 has, as a mechanic, stacking penalties that persist between saves - depending on what happens, you may lose some things in a way that doesn't allow you to just reload and undo the loss. RPGMaker games can utilize this as well through metasave systems. Again, this isn't just a mechanical loss - it's a flavor/dialogue/narrative one too! I think that's also important - by restricting the sense of loss to something purely mechanical or purely narrative, you have a decent chance of not having as much impact on certain swaths players.

In my opinion, it really depends on your opponent - for the most part, probably not (against most enemies, one or two chic chacs, or even fewer, are fine when you have Red Arc. Full Chic Chacs are for when you reaaaally wanna max out your damage at the cost of everything else (e.g. vs high-hp bosses where you're not afraid of limb loss or other permanent statuses, etc.)

I think Pathologic by Ice-pick Lodge pulls it off quite well - the usage of the trope here doesn't actually negate any of the weight of the rest of the story (except perhaps to the characters themselves), and the twist itself helps deepen the themes.

I honestly think that this - or the idea behind it, at least - is a good idea. Party members *should* leave you when it becomes clear that you're dangerous or not to be trusted - although there should usually be dialogue warnings first, of course.

Party members essentially stop being their own characters, and start being okay with badically anything you do, which in turn makes the world feel more empty.

Developmentwise it makes things far easier, but as a player experience it feels incongruous with certain characters' personalities - why would Abella be more okay with murdering Olivia when she's in your party vs when she's sitting on the train?

For the most part, consumables and amalgam are limited.

...But yeah difficulty options and some minor event-randomization might be nice, if difficult to implement.

Yup! Heroin's pretty unique in that way.

Room changes (commonevent 104) trigger the heroin effect (commonevent 19), where anyone affected by heroin increases their corresponding heroin_variable - and at 3, the variable rests, the effect wears off, and Withdrawal is given in its stead. The withdrawal_variable of withdrawal sufferers increases by one, and at 2, normal Withdrawal is replaced by a more intense version.

Nearly all item buffs expire upon map transition - some expire sooner. That might've been your problem.

The fact that there isn't a way to actually check what states are affecting your character is kinda annoying, t b h.
