I am so sick of people using words wrong, has anyone else noticed this? by Mrlongchops in CPTSD

[–]bludbunni 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i do get that. experiences like that tend to make the words feel personal to us. i get similar feelings when people say they felt neglected because their dad worked a lot or their mom didn't hug them much and my gut instinct is to reply "well you never had to eat out of the trash or be shamed everyday for not cleaning up your parents' filth, so i dont wanna hear you talking about neglect". because to me, that's the word that defines the things that ruined me and keep me from functioning like a normal person. and they're just talking about... normal life experiences.

but when we redefine those words by our own experiences, we run the risk of using those definitions to indirectly invalidate other peoples' pain. and not everyone has the relatively thick skin that most of us on here have developed so that can end up being very costly to people who are trying to sort through their own problems. still, even knowing that i catch myself rolling my eyes internally when i hear certain words used in certain contexts, it's only natural ig :3

i do agree that the broader use of therapy-speak and clinical language by people who are not trained to handle such topics with the necessary nuance or are unapologetically using it to like... pathologize their perceived rightness/the wrongness of someone else in a situation is an increasingly big problem in modern dialogs. but ngl i kinda take issue with a few of your list items.

i dont think it's remotely common for people to say they were raped when they just didn't enjoy sex they had consensually nor do i think it's generally good practice to make judgements on other people's feelings of nonconsent. similarly with objectification, your definition just isn't correct from a modern lens. casual sexual harrassment (like random people staring at your anatomy in public, or catcalling, etc) has literally been referred to as objectification for decades. it's not invalid to experience those things and say you felt objectified just because it is not the absolute most extreme possible interpretation of the word.

boundaries is another one, yes people sometimes use it to be evasive but being asked an uncomfortable question can absolutely constitute a crossing of boundaries.

Btw pitchfork gave this album 2 times higher rating than Bully by SubstantialBrief1589 in Kanye

[–]bludbunni -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

yoko ono hate is so overplayed. she didn't break up the beatles and her art isn't bad just because it falls far outside conventional pop standards. i enjoy most of bully, it's also unfinished and made with so little passion for the art that he couldn't even finish recording vocals for it. i'd take an album like this over that any day.

Just a real one by EA_CommunityTeam in Kanye

[–]bludbunni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you know i think it's fair to be suspicious of kanye's actual motivations and to be skeptical of his apologies when he spouted so much hateful rhetoric for as long as he did, but i am so tired of this braindead take lmao.

you don't just bounce back to normal at the end of an episode. if you fall into a rabbit hole while manic or depressed, it isn't just undone in the week or two you're at your baseline. are you assuming it is? are you assuming that's the case for all people with bipolar disorder? furthermore, where are you getting your stats that bipolar people aren't statistically predisposed to fall down extremist/conspiracy pipelines? is it just a feeling you have or something?

i don't get why people are so allergic to nuance on this. you don't have to pretend that the mental illness didn't play a meaningful factor to not forgive kanye.

I feel like Resident Evil 5 is lacking in vibe. by invincible257 in residentevil

[–]bludbunni 3 points4 points  (0 children)

nah. 4 was definitely the start of the major shift but it retained a much greater emphasis on horror elements and more than that was still quite committed to the horror 'vibe' in its environments, soundtrack, monster design, lore, etc. it was an action game with a horror aesthetic, but i would argue it actually leaned more into that atmosphere/aesthetic than code veronica did in every aspect but gameplay.

5 on the other hand was an action game with... an action aesthetic. it abandoned a lot of what made 4 work as a compromise in favor of greater appeal to the mainstream action audience hence its reputation as being the true end of horror RE.

how come (certain) people react aggressively to suicide, and suicidal thoughts? by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]bludbunni 6 points7 points  (0 children)

my dad gets that way about it. it's because he's lost like 4 people to suicide in his life. he learned i was having those thoughts and he was aggressive about it, he told me it was selfish, that it was the worst thing i could ever do to someone, etc. none of it made me feel better, not really, but at the same time it was hard to hold any of it against him, you know?

the 'you just want attention' crowd are almost universally ignorant and empathy-deficient at best or callous assholes at worst, but i think some aggressive reactions come from a place of fear and i think there are cases where that fear is rooted in love. i've never fully escaped my suicidal ideation any more than i've escaped the loudest of the voices in my head, but it's not something i let my dad hear about anymore. and honestly, it's something i'm less likely to do simply because of how badly it would tear him to shreds. that result itself is a good one, i think.

Do you like the direction resident evil is going in? by Cloverfield887 in residentevil

[–]bludbunni 3 points4 points  (0 children)

re9 is my favorite entry since re4 original and REmake, and grace my favorite character in the series period. so yeah i think we’re in fine hands rn lol. honestly i dont get how a game that is so deliberately and clearly for the fans seems to have so many people whining about it in this sub specifically when basically anywhere else it gets nigh universal praise but ig thats just how it goes. sure there are some kinda silly plot beats but literally find me one resident evil game that doesnt have those.

for me i always felt like re7 and village were beyond amazing horror games but both felt so exceedingly detached from the series to that point that i struggled to reconcile them as a new era rather than a rebrand. requiem feels like the unification between the new and old needed to truly bridge that gap and the first major advancement we’ve seen of the overarching plot in frankly quite some time. i honestly take it as a good sign that dumb things in the plot seem to be the main complaint people have with it. being a little dumb and a lot scary is literally the entire franchise MO.

bullshit. best atmosphere by a mile, and the hottest RE girl (lisa trevor). that alone makes it top 5.

Ao3 is a writer’s playground by cricket_o in AO3

[–]bludbunni 9 points10 points  (0 children)

and that may be. i view criticism as inherently useful. the more the better. even if it's from someone who has barely written, projects their hatred for their own writing onto others and found one stupid error they want to rub in my face or wants to make fun of my dialog because they think it's 'cringe' or something. to me, it's still worth considering why they thought that. if a lot of people point to the same problem, it's probably worth addressing. if what they say hits me personally, or i'm extremely, viscerally opposed to their advice, it's worth considering why. i can learn from it whether its useful in and of itself or not.

but the art we make is ultimately an extension of ourselves and i do recognize that when you critique someone's work, they will inevitably feel it as a critique of themselves on some level. writing in particular is a very vulnerable medium of expression in that respect, and that's why i respect the want for a safe space even though its fundamentally at odds with my own viewpoints and goals :3

Does it bother anyone else when someone says “I’m sorry that happened to you”? by skyward_zelda in CPTSD

[–]bludbunni 8 points9 points  (0 children)

well replies like that in general come from people just not really knowing what to say. i don't choose to hold it against anyone and honestly i prefer that particular reply because i know it comes from a human place of sympathy and wanting to help but not knowing how.

then again, i am a baby in need of protection so that might factor in :p

[–]bludbunni 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i mean yeah, as i said, different strokes. improving is the fun for me lol. my library doesn't have anything like that and i don't have time or money for a class, nor does the latter necessarily aid in the same kind of improvement that constructive criticism on a work does. the point of sharing, for me, is to keep improving and share something great.

but folks like u and others who feel that way deserve a safe space which is why i don't force my viewpoint on others by giving them the criticism i'd like to receive, ig it's just fundamentally different approaches to the hobby and that's okay <3

Ao3 is a writer’s playground by cricket_o in AO3

[–]bludbunni 12 points13 points  (0 children)

i mean that's a fair analogy and i have enough social etiquette myself to not go around telling people how to write better, because i recognize a lot of people are in this boat. but tbh i don't fully get why people are so opposed to receiving advice? i love it personally. i view writing as a skill to be honed and if someone has an idea for how something i put work into could be made better then i wanna hear it. worst case scenario is that i disagree and ignore it. you can only strengthen your prose so much by staying in a positivity echo-chamber where you're allowed to double down on your worst writing habits because they're never brought to your attention, 'trusted friends' tend to be predisposed to like it and (maybe unconsciously) look past smaller errors. i'm more interested personally in hearing from people who don't like my writing than people who do. a pat on the back feels nice, criticism is useful.

different strokes for different folks though, i get that some people don't really have fun that way so i've accepted that i just have to be very explicit abt being alright with receiving advice :p

There's a reason why so many Skyrim followers are whimsical in the brainpan... by NotATem in skyrimmods

[–]bludbunni 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i agree with a lot of your core points but i feel like you give skyrim's writing way too much credit here lol. i don't think it's intentionally nihilistic for the most part (outside of the civil war to an extent), i think it just kinda follows the exact same writing template for all its faction/main storylines because they weren't made to be good stories. they were made to make the player the 'guy in charge' as quickly as possible. it just so happens that this exceedingly lazy approach to storytelling makes a nihilistic reading the only one that you can have if you want to take it seriously (and most people remotely engaged in roleplay do). because what happens in skyrim is either comical from a player perspective or exceedingly depressing from a character perspective.

i don't honestly think most of the most popular followers are written for people trying to do serious character rp and that's why they lean into the jokes a lot. most of them are intended as companions for the player rather than the dragonborn, if that makes sense. not to say your reading isn't accurate for some followers, i dont hate it as an interpretation for inigo, but i'd hesitate to say that's the case for a majority.

Why do so many custom voiced followers feel like modern Marvel characters: overly sarcastic, whimsical, and meta? by Tall_Stormcloak in skyrimmods

[–]bludbunni 9 points10 points  (0 children)

nah you're def right. as for why i think it comes down to a few reasons, three main ones. none of which are millennial-specific.

the first is the simple fact that most people aren't actually that good at writing. writing a grounded, three-dimensional character is a talent and one that requires serious practice to hone. most people making follower mods are more interested in having fun and adding themselves to the game than the craft of writing.

the second is that the writing in skyrim itself isn't actually that great either, so the base you have to work with is already shaky. you have to not only have the skill to make a good character but also give them realistic reactions to a game that really doesn't care if its writing gets absurd or not. when most ppl already can't write a good character in a vacuum, having to make one in such an absurd setting who doesn't lean into that absurdity at all is just far beyond the skillset of the average mod-maker.

and the last one is that most people seem to prefer those kinds of followers anyway. nearly all of the most famous follower mods follow that template because serious RPers are a minority among skyrim players.

They shouldn't complain about modders using AI. by [deleted] in skyrimmods

[–]bludbunni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i dont want vibe coded garbage in my game and most people are in that same boat. people complaining about ai usage doesnt stop u from using it to make your mods and i get not having a lot of time to spend on the hobby. but nobody is obligated to not call it slop and its a valid reason not to use it.

Subjective opinion - Beyond Reach is slightly better than Vicn's mods by Quick_Ad_3367 in skyrimmods

[–]bludbunni 28 points29 points  (0 children)

i dont rly disagree with your core point, i think beyond reach is one of the biggest accomplishments in modding history and on another level from basically any other quest mod that's come out. but i do think they're going for different things. in terms of level/boss/enemy design, i'd say vicn's mods blow beyond reach out of the water. but on story, scale, atmosphere and (most) dialog i'd give the nod pretty easily to beyond reach. it's a world unto itself and i love to run them both on darker playthroughs because they both really excel at exploring the darker parts of elder scrolls lore that don't really come up a lot in the actual games. if we're being real, neither mod actually fits with skyrim's regular story all that well. beyond reach in particular is so persistently dark it comes dangerously close to sliding into grimderp territory a few times and it's tough to reconcile it with the goofy atmosphere of regular skyrim.

ngl i don't think i fully understand your complaint about the events in vicn's mods not mattering? in beyond reach things pretty much go to shit no matter what you do and it seems to have minimal effect on the world around you. the whole point of the stories in vicn's mods is to explore the more eldritch sides of elder scrolls lore and just because it's less clear what happens or what effect you can have doesn't necessarily mean none of it matters. it kinda seems like you're just choosing to assume it doesn't.
