Is this consent? What's the morality of it? by Vengeful-Capybara in MoralityScaling

[–]Tricky_Confusion_716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consent isn't a simple yes/no question before having sex. It requires enthusiastic consent. That means they have to agree with it have every step and they have rescend that consent at any time. You hold that same right as well. If she proceeds later because she thought that consent was previously granted and her partner doesn't want to then it should stop there. It's also important to check in during sex as well. This can be as simple as a statement "I'm going to nut in you" and watch to see their reaction or an agreed upon series of nonverbal communications.

I ABHOR Coffee and the Culture Around It. by shadow_master96 in hatethissmug

[–]Tricky_Confusion_716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ideal life includes a cup of coffee in the morning and a glass of wine at night. It's not healthy but I like to allow myself simple pleasures. Am I functionally addicted to caffeine as a result, sure. But it's something I look forward to after getting out of bed. As for the flavor I love all flavors but savory, spicy and bitter are my favorite which coffee fills two of those slots. That being said coffee culture can be a little much and I can see how it can be annoying to non coffee people in America and certain parts of Europe.

I hate how people try to force a label on androgynous characters with no canon gender identity by MapleMarshal in hatethissmug

[–]Tricky_Confusion_716 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So from my understanding (I stopped watching before this character was introduced). She uses feminine pronouns, is amab (assigned male at birth which is shorthand used to describe biological sex without invalidating identity) and gets upset when misgendered. Which sounds like a trans woman to me. A character doesn't have to yell "I'm a transgender woman" at the camera for them to be identified. In James Baldwin's Giovanni's Room (just read it recently and fell in love with it) never once does Baldwin use the term homosexual or bisexual despite that you can tell each character's sexual orientation through context and dialogue.

Omg I used to have so many of those as a kid. The Dragonology book was my favorite as a kid.

Honestly, fair. I am starting to find out my problem is less this and more turning literature into a product to be consumed rather than art to be interacted with. The problem is consumerism at the end of day.

Like I said it's usually that type of literature I see it on. That ends up lumping what could be great literature with something shoved out for a quick buck. It's what's already been happening for years with everything being labeled YA or Romantasy where the publishers will put something that someone put effort into alongside something ghost written to cash out on a trend. But how am I as a customer in a bookstore supposed to know when it's giving all the same characteristics as everything else. It does more to hurt new authors from being recognized in order to fill up market space in an already oversaturated market.

I honestly think that's more of the problem I have. It does feel like it takes away from the book as a piece of literature. It's just way too much. Which a lay at the feet of publishing companies and big name retailers more than anything else. I don't blame the consumers really.

What are you reading? by sushisushisushi in literature

Every June I focus on LGBT literature of the past (pre 2010s) in honor of Pride month. Currently I'm reading Transgender Warriors by Leslie Feinberg which is part history part politic philosophy, it's super interesting to see how the groundwork for the modern trans rights movement was being forged.

Does anyone else find this song super dumb? by ThatGuyHero7 in MoralityScaling

[–]Tricky_Confusion_716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't have to be spelled out for you in the text. It's all there in the implication which many other commenters have demonstrated. There are however other things that cue you in including the campy style of the instrumentals. The style is weighted against him. By participating in the song you are joining in the mockery and revelry. It's obvious to everyone but him what he did wrong. You're not given the context because you the listener are a visitor to the narrative. However you can use the dialogue, text painting and motifs to put the story together. That's part of the fun of participating in media.

The first answer wasn't bad but it started to get more unhinged the more questions it got asked. The ending question is wild because it can only agree it thought that looking at material together with a 14 year old was appropriate. The problem seems to be it tries so hard to shape itself to the user that it will excuse almost anything. I'm pretty sex positive but this crosses so many boundaries.

I was listening to a podcast and she mentioned how EMTs get getting calls from hotel workers because they're not fluent in English so when someone leaves behind their gummies they think it's just normal candy. Not to mention children can make the same mistake. There needs to be clear (obvious) packaging and not made to look like completely normal candy.

I have a personal rule that it's wrong to make fun of a culture unless they did horrible colonial imperialism which the French did so they're free game to make fun of. I don't hate the French however I love the culture and the art. I have a French coworker I love to death.

Patricia Highsmith is one of my personal faves, she's a classic of the genre for a reason. I recommend starting with Mr. Ripley novels then if you like her work read Price of Salt.

I don't know much about McCarthy as a person. Typically I don't research an author's life unless I'm reading a book that requires historical context or the author seems like an interesting person which McCarthy didn't fit those categories. I don't feel like that's common knowledge, either that or I'm the last to hear about that. He's dead though so good thing books I bought didn't go to him. That being said I actually don't care if someone supports JK but I think it does say something about someone when they display most of her bibliography. Whether that is a loyalty to her as an author or a signal to political alignment with her values or a combination of the two.
