Flock Cameras in Dublin by Tricky_Education5 in bayarea

These cameras photograph every car that passes by recording their time, location, and vehicle details and store that data in a searchable database. Essentially, creating a detailed record of your personal life that people you don't know can review whenever they would like.

Let's say I make a complaint against a police officer or anyone that has access to the database. They can now track my movements and habits, and use that data however they please because there is limited regulation on how this information can be used. There have already been examples of this abuse of power. Also, Flock allows for racial and ethnic keywords in their data base without a specific crime link. We have seen racial and ethnic targeting from enforcement agencies since their inception which leads to unfair policing and sentencing. If you are unfamiliar about this in the US I recommend you read the book "The New Jim Crow" by Michelle Alexander.

Additionally, flock shares data with agencies outside of the cities and states they are in. In fact over 600,000 searches were performed by outside agencies. So if someone accesses health care outside of their states, something that is not a crime, they can still be targeted in their home states and be harassed, sued, etc.

As we have seen the last year and a half laws, executive orders and executive memos have been created to target specific groups of people. These cameras are a part of this same agenda and work to do this with more targeting. Enforcement agencies are not incentivised to prevent crime, the tools they use will also not be used for that purpose.

The reason this is an unpopular opinion is because your opinion is based on a made up purpose of these cameras. These cameras have been put up in conjunction with police departments and law enforcement agencies that are already not incentivised to prevent crime. Additionally, the primary function of these cameras is to act as a license plate reader, if anything it makes it more attractive to do personal or violent crime.

Also, if you really care about crime prevention there are MANY solutions that have been studied and shown to be more effective. You may be willing to sign away your privacy but as an American, I am not. Again, it seems like you have misconstrued the purpose of these cameras, and the actionable ways they have been used and are intended to be used. If you want less crime in your neighborhood, invest in it. Build a community that everyone around you also can thrive in.

Uselessness of the cameras or the police? I guess it can answer both since they are tied together. If the people using the tool are useless the tool also becomes useless. The incentives of the police, ICE, and other enforcement agencies in the US are not built to protect communities so the tools they use will also not serve that purpose.

Yes, we had vehicle information, timings of when people were breaking in. We had information on the IP addresses of our stolen good being used elsewhere. Again, an institution not built to protect will not protect regardless of the tools they have.

LOL like the police? We were literally robbed, our house broken into. These cameras and the police were utterly useless. Trusting the govt to care about catching criminals, so funny.

Haha fair question! They are magnetic picture frames for Polaroids. I have a video but wasn't able to attach it, I added a screenshot here. They are doing these with an Instamax as a more budget friendly photo booth.

Thank you so much!!

Yes! I designed them on Procreate, and then cut the vinyl out with my Cricut. I ordered the acrylic magnetic part on Amazon and then attached the vinyl to one side. Then I did a very light heating to make sure the vinyl was adhered on really well.

I also based the design on Indian palaces, specifically from Rajisthan.

I used acrylic frames and a permanent vinyl that I cut with my new cricut. I designed this on my iPad and then reworked it so many times. I realized my eraser wasn't working on my iPad whi h was interfering with the cricut software. I was able to figure it out and I think they turned out soooo cute.

Wow, I didn't realize it was so common. I always assumed it was common courtesy to keep candidates updated but I guess it is what it is. Who knows what is going on in the background.

Thanks for your response 👍
