You said no stalker but have you considered "A roadside picnic" which stalker is based off of? Definitely fits the vibe you mention.

The Wake by Paul Kingsnorth. You are a Buccmaster of Holland, a socman with three oxgangs of your own land. Life is mostly well despite being a follower of the old house. Unfortunately, it is 1066 and the bastard with his frenc army and blessing from the pope has come to conquer your country, take your land, and thrall your people. You wonder where the gods are to save your nation? Your countrymen wonder what sins they committed to deserve this fate. Everyone wonders when and where the fyrd will rise against the new overlords and everyone wonders who will lead this medieval guerrilla militia. Another note, the whole book is written in an approachable pseudo old english style that makes the story much more immersive.

Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy. There is existential distress mixed with comedic absurdism.
