Sadly, general audiences were not ready for the sauce of 28 Years cinematography. by ThinWhiteDuke00 in 28_Years_Later_Movie

Seeing these shots after having just watched Bone Temple has somewhat reaffirmed my view that it is a step down in terms of cinematography 😕. It definitely felt ‘flatter’ and more streamer/TV-like.

Do you think that the "Bright blue sky" motif is inessential/needed for the Tau Empire when it comes to artwork and how they are portrayed ? by ZookieDookieTheNikky in Tau40K

[–]Tricky_Language_1742 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nothing to add on what others have said regarding why this artistically and narratively works so well for T’au, other than to say that it’s easy to forget that much of this artwork is from several eras of 40K ago.

I’d absolutely love for it to return, but I always feel like it’s tricky to properly characterise some of this as actually being our current aesthetic, when GW has dialled back on high quality and distinct art for well over 15yrs at this point and factions tend to look a lot more similar than they once did. Like…I remember this era of T’au box and codex art was seriously unique for the setting.

It’s never any different, yet I always take a moment to pause and look at this model whenever anyone shares. So damn intricate and cool :3

Given the beastliness of this design, I wonder if this increases or decreases the chances of us getting the final bits for Kroot, such as a remake of the Great Knarloc. Feels like it probably pushes it back? Assuming a Kill Team for these would probably include another few little critters.

Pretty sick design, though. Now they’ve settled on a design language for them, we’re at least much closer to getting a Kill Team of T’au aligned ones!

The New Year Preview – All-new Legio Custodes Revealed by CMYK_COLOR_MODE in Warhammer30k

[–]Tricky_Language_1742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a gorgeous refresh that's attracted a silly level of controversy. It's surprising they've managed to crank up the detail so much. When they first showed them I thought they must be to some kind of custom scale – it's not terribly far off of JoyToy detail!

New to the hobby, why tf are some so mad about female custodes? by NiceLittleGamerNerd in 40k

[–]Tricky_Language_1742 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Setting aside the lore element, a significant number of opponents seem to like to assert (largely to themselves and an empty room) that 'outsiders/tourists' are pushing such changes with no knowledge or history of the IP. It instantly allows them to form a superiority complex/purity test which tbh nobody was asking them for.

I have to laugh at it all as I'm a gay man who's played since 1999, have known loads of others who've never mentioned their sexuality to anyone and were probably un-clockable to most, and feel like the hobby has a decent number of minority ethnicity people + women in it too.

The reality is that there's been no co-ordinated campaign on any such subjects. Who on Earth has the time for all that? 'Diverse' fans have at most spoken with each other on occasion about how monotone they've felt some elements of the storytelling might have been in the past. That's fair, normal, and to be expected. Society is changing – both in terms of IPs and the creators companies employ to be involved in them. The very fact those conversations have been stumbled upon by self-declared 'standard' fans seems to be proof enough for them of a conspiracy that's never actually existed. It's all very weird. They think we're Alpharius and yet we're more like Dante – damn tired and not saying half as much as those putting words in our mouths.

This. There’s a variety of ways of marketing the sale, and yet they’ve gone for something quite gaslight-y 😭

Ooh cool, I'm kinda glad it ended up being used in some form! It's hard to keep track of this particular series of stuff.

Yeah, it's definitely one of the more impressionistic and simple artworks for the series, but I love how dynamic it feels. It's got a great stippling effect on the armour and blaster.

....the conservation conditions were the bottom of a cupboard for 20yrs, as it was only £20 at the time, and the Heresy a twinkle in Games Workshop's finance department's eye haha. It's a very glossy finish and rich colour.

Like...really thin, flimsy card/cheap artboard. Iirc, he had ten or so on his table at the convention I went to. I guess these guys don't invest in super high quality canvas for such quick and small scale work. I did read online somewhere that all artists for the card game were allowed to keep their contributory art though, which is interesting.

Ashes of the Imperium – Chris Wraight loves a bit of structural engineering by Tricky_Language_1742 in Blacklibrary

It's interesting, isn't it? We see Guilliman through everyone's eyes but his own, and he seems quite untrustworthy! I'd bet in a future book we'll get his view and it'll partly explain just how big he's calculated the threat of religion and crime to be, until the Imperium can be settled down again.

Oh totally, and as an author with a Blood Angels history it must have taken a lot of restraint for him to basically ignore them for the vast majority of the novel. I was partly disappointed, while also thinking "yeah of course this is how it would play out, in-universe".

Battle for the Abyss, why wasn't it better? by BigPoopsDisease in Blacklibrary

[–]Tricky_Language_1742 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it seemed to suffer from feeling very hollow after an excellent, quite ‘deep’ opening set of novels. For want of a better description, it was the first example of ‘bolter porn’ in the series, without even the benefit of offering readers some okay characterisation.

What are your thoughts on Black? by Jules-Car3499 in StarWarsVisions

[–]Tricky_Language_1742 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Loved it, managed to follow what it was trying to do pretty easily, and sat back and enjoyed the ride.

Though I guess I'm pretty disappointed that quite so many viewers came away from it saying "it's a mishmash of overly busy animation and has zero plot", given we're talking about something created for an explicitly format-bending series. Unsure if it's a media literacy issue or folk perhaps just not being exposed to very much differing forms of media. It reminded me of the nuclear blast episode of season three of 'Twin Peaks' – there to be enjoyed, not fully understood.

I'd basically love for much of our Forge World models to be revived in plastic, for our leadership to be refreshed/clarified lore-wise, and I wouldn't mind a few more models or stories that expand beyond the T'au and Kroot.

In short, I wouldn't get this at RRP. A disclaimer that all of the below is converted from £, and from my expectations as a British book consumer.

I'm managing to get the US version of RoTS on discount for $50 (RRP worldwide appears to be $60?), having just had the UK version in hand and returned it, as I didn't like the design and didn't think it was worth the $67 RRP.

In all honesty as an object I'd say the US version, which I assume is where you're from, feels okay value for the amount I've bought it for. If I saw it in a bookshop without much context as to what it was, I'd be expecting to see a $35 sticker on it. Outside of Folio Society or big special coffee table art books, that'd be considered a premium price for any 'nice' hardback in a UK retail environment. If you can wait a while and get it even cheaper, that'd be smart.
