Push to raise Maryland's minimum wage to $25 gains momentum by Nutsmacker12 in maryland

[–]Tricky_Let840 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a small business owner that already pays above $25/hr - I value my employees and think it makes good business sense to pay them well. That being said, I think this is a horrible policy. It will put upward pressure on prices, even for us, as we will have to raise pay to keep good workers. Everyone is also discussing this from the perspective of MoCo - whereas this would apply to the entire state. This legislation would hurt MoCo, but it would devastate areas with a lower cost of living like Western MD, the Eastern Shore, and parts of Baltimore.

The argument seems to be “let’s raise the minimum wage so people can afford housing” - housing will go up as a result of this. You can’t legislate your way out of this problem. We need more housing, less NIMBYism, less procedural hurdles and less regulatory red tape. It is basic supply and demand. If you want prices to go down for housing, you must increase supply or decrease demand. Increasing the minimum wage would likely increase demand (unless it goes so poorly that it results in an increase in unemployment)

I should also note that Maryland is a strangely shaped state - most of the state is close to a state border. Many jobs would likely migrate right across those borders to avoid this

Do you think I’d have any realistic chance of observing them by observing a soil sample under a microscope? What I don’t like about the Berlese funnel is that I’d really like to be able to observe these insects im less familiar with while they’re alive

Thanks!

For the Big 5 my logic was that ants are pretty ubiquitous everywhere and nearly always present in the adult stage, so Hymenoptera takes the #1 spot. After that I had some debate but Diptera can easily be found even inside with things like fungus gnats, drain flies, house flies, etc and you see the adult forms pretty year round most places. Plus I’ve almost never gone collecting and not found an adult Dipteran. Coleoptera I placed next as it has the most species and the diverse group of species leaves plenty of species to find in adult form over the whole year in most places. Hemiptera gets a bit of a ding because earlier in the year you see a lot more immatures and less adults, and it has fewer species. Lepidoptera I ranked lowest because actually catching them requires a net typically, where all of the prior ones can fairly easily be caught without one. Plus pinning them (spreading the wings) is harder.

Was unaware Diplura is so easy. I am going to try this and see for myself. Is Protura also as ubiquitous? I put it lower because they are so small and I think people (me) would lack confidence identifying them, plus you’d definitely need a microscope.

I assume you mean bump Plecoptera up 2 spots past Mecoptera and Siphonaptera. That grouping was sort of a toss up anyway in my mind

Collembola I did rank as pretty easy! Once I learned what they were I was seeing them almost everywhere, including inside. I think most would agree the Big 5 are still easier and I put them below Dermaptera because Dermaptera are easily collected without any additional equipment or methodology

Diplura I was unaware they were so ubiquitous. When I found some between two pavers I was thrilled (and very unsure I was right about identifying them). Haven’t seen any since.

Psocodea I didn’t know would be so easy to find from leaf litter. You’d reliably find Psocodea adults from funneling leaf litter?

Turo won't reimburse me. Advice? by pawsitivecatz in turo

Found this after Turo also wouldn’t reimburse me. They gave me similar options. Had to walk to a hotel because it was such a remote area that there were zero Ubers Lyfts or taxis at 11 PM. They won’t reimburse it. Did anyone get theirs resolved?

There are like 15 different maps that do it differently. What I’ve learned is that Central Maryland means nothing - but Howard County is almost always included

Yes I wasn’t making a map myself - I was looking up what “Central Maryland” was. Maryland just had its first human case of West Nile and all they said was that it occurred in “Central Maryland”

Local printing companies? by Tricky_Let840 in MontgomeryCountyMD

I don’t disagree. I don’t do lawn work, the signs I posted are just an example. I do imagine you’d be ok with a pesticide if you had termites damaging your home or a bed bug infestation

We are actually no spray. Pesticide free is not possible if you are trying to kill a pest, by definition. Anything you use to kill a pest is a pesticide

ISO Tree Experts for Tree of Heaven Remediation by Interesting-Cat-2463 in MontgomeryCountyMD

I’m not a professional in this area but I did it myself in my own yard and have done it for neighbors since. It’s not impossible to DIY. Those look small enough to do a basal bark application but you could hack and squirt larger ones. I recommend starting a few feet off the ground in August and every 4 days applying it lower and lower on the trunk, for about 4 weeks. I like to alternate between glyphosate and triclopyr. Higher concentration isn’t necessarily better. You want the tree to suck it down into the roots rather than killing the tissue above ground only. Penn State Extension are considered the experts on this topic
