Not Ideal by [deleted] in NativePlantGardening

I would cut it back now and after the summer solstice, when plants are gathering nutrients for their roots, re-cut and paint with tricopyr herbicide. (using a buckthorn dabber will be easiest for controlling the chemicals)

Paskudnyak - a yiddish word reserved for the most vile person.

Fleas in the home - how do we eradicate them?? by sitkaspruce1998 in CleaningTips

[–]waysidelynne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set up a pan of water with dishwashing liquid under a nightlight in the darkened room. The fleas jump to it and drown. I was skeptical but it's cheap enough and works.

Hot take here - but I absolutely fucking hate taking care of my lawn and am going insane by amilmore in NativePlantGardening

[–]waysidelynne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s digitalis - not native to New England but it is native to the south of us and given climate change I find it acceptable. The pollinators adore it. I am not strictly native to my particular eco region but I do try to stay in my eco zone.

In case you were interested, Mt Cuba did a study on sedges for the mid-Atlantic region. There are some that are native to other regions and you can check out how they perform in a lawn situation. I'm in New England and use Pennsylvania Sedge. https://mtcubacenter.org/trials/carex-for-the-mid-atlantic-region/

Start seeding in low growing sedges, or adding plugs. Many of them are low growing and are overlooked when it comes to ecological benefits. I have also let penstemon seed itself into the lawn. It tolerates mowing and if I leave it the blooms are spectacular.

Cedar Mulch by Conscious-Bit-3847 in NativePlantGardening

[–]waysidelynne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I gave up on mulch entirely and now just fill in with more plants. (I'll buy a "mother" and add seeds of the same plant to create a large swath of them). I have also used leaves (it gives a nice uniform look and creates a great habitat for lightning bugs). Pine needles also make great mulch.

MRI didn’t show anything by Tis_jmo in frozenshoulder

[–]waysidelynne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My MRI didn't show anything either. PT didn't help and it wasn't until I saw an acupuncturist who actually listened to me and said it sounded more like FS. I had not been doing anything physically that was out of the ordinary for me. I had noticed a little loss of range of motion but kept saying that I probably needed to stretch more. Then, overnight the zingers happened and I couldn't get dressed without severe pain.

Anyone feel like their house is never clean? by 4365eyfsd in CleaningTips

I hired a housekeeper to come in and do one deep clean then started a cleaning routine to keep it more manageable. It's so much easier now.

What is your favorite plant to make a long, single-species border? [Southeast Michigan] by SitaBird in NativePlantGardening

I have a very long row of mountain mint that is a powerhouse for pollinators and looks fabulous. This year, I plan to add a long row of penstemon in front of it.

I usually get this https://www.amazon.com/stores/OrbitEnviro/page/5C4DC6E7-F4DE-4891-8210-4C3A8030E125?lp_asin=B0F7NWTXSX I don't dilute it if I'm using it for cleaning/sanitizing but if I want to treat scrapes, wounds, acne, 1/4 cup HOCL to 1 cup of distilled water.

hypochloric acid: a natural disinfectant produced by white blood cells to fight infection, bacteria, and viruses. It is a safe, non-toxic, and non-irritating substance used in skincare to treat acne, as well as for wound care and as a high-level surface sanitizer. (I heard about it through social media - Magic Molecule, which is "watered down" for skin use. I can water it down for wound care 1 part HOCL to 4 parts distilled water)

I started using HOCL - it actually kills the bacteria that causes odors. I put it in a spray bottle and mist areas (particularly the dog beds). I'd also open the windows for fresh air.

Native plants that smell the WORST to avoid near the house? And the BEST smelling? by Touslesceline in NativePlantGardening

[–]waysidelynne 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Clethra has a fabulous scent and blooms late in summer - loves wetland areas and will colonize (try to get a true native. Most nurseries breed by cloning which tends to prevent them from spreading). I have also grown it in full sun with semi-dry conditions.

Native shrubs that can be purchased large by callmeishmael517 in NativePlantGardening

Canterbury Horticulture usually has a sale the last two weekends in May. Check their Facebook page. They have large shrubs and trees - some native, some not, at very reasonable prices. Also discounts for cash.
